Ugh just ban Oko in Commander.

Oko is giving you trouble in Commander? Not Thassa's Oracle and friends?
yes, no, sort of. This in part due to EDH being more about social stuff and what metas you visit rather than the banlist itself. One meta might be more laid back, another could be more competitive.

I remember briefly seeing it once on the EDH RC's discord that Strixhaven takes more influence from Eastern magical schools settings instead of Western. Source was Sheldon Menery himself who stated he worked on Strixhaven.

secret lairs are scummy and I won't buy one.

    Anyway onto just evaluation:

Faeries: The art for Glen Elendra Archmage and Vendilion Clique I think are the most charming of the 4.
Basics: The art reminds me of something my dad would have made at one point which is good. Its also scummy that its only 1 of each land AND tbh, this is technically worse value than Eldraine Wonderland because these lands lack the snow subtype.
Valentines: So first of all, Gisela, Blade of Goldnight, Goblin Rabblemaster, and the Goblin token are all horrifying to me more so than the tryhard metal attempts. Heliod, Sun-Crowned seems like it could be a meme especially if hes trying to stab Elspeth with that heart-shaped spear. The Monastery Swiftspear I feel indifferent about. The Boros Charm with the cherub comes across as actually more endearing than the Gisela one.
Kaldheim Showcase Pt 1: This is gonna be bought by legacy and modern players because of Primeval Titan.
Kaldheim Showcase Pt 2: This is gonna be bought more by commander players.

Does anyone know how much Time Spiral Remastered boxes are going to sell for? Is there an MSRP or anything? There's a preorder listing on ebay for 250 which seems egregiously high

We know almost nothing about the set and it's set to release in a little over a month
already preordered a box off amazon for $140.

So far for the timeshifted cards: Lotus Bloom, Relentless Rats, Chalice of the Void, Path to Exile
I think its safe to assume that either a large portion or all of the timeshifted cards are from Mirrodin or later done in pre-Mirrodin style.

Regardless of what the secret lair is or what its for, its still a secret lair at the end of the day and that will always be scummy to me.

  • posted a message on [KHM] Ban Coming? (Hint: Tibalt's Trickery is Lame)
    The modern version is basically:
    4x Violent Outburst
    1x Tibalt's Trickery
    4x Emrakul, the Aeons Torn
And it even runs 4x copies of Gemstone Caverns just so it can perform a t2 version of it in modern. Rest of the deck by the way is lands. You know is the most accurate comparison to this shenanigans right now? Treasure Hunt + a single copy of Thassa's Oracle. But this is better than that as instead of pulling up your 2nd or 3rd Treasure Hunt, you just cast your first Violent Outburst to get a singular Tibalt's Trickery.

The main issue the playtest team seems to have is they don't have the right people whose goal is to see how powerful a card truly interacts with the existing cards. I also don't think this is a new issue, more just we see it happen more because the bar for power on cards has been raised. I mean we had cards in the passed where 'whoops this somehow got playtest design' like Umezawa's Jitte or the Raffinity set of cards, or the Felidar Guardian combo or any other number of mistakes. And for a long while they seemed to have their stuff together as for years we didn't have a single ban.

  • posted a message on [KHM] Kaldheim Story Articles and Discussion
What I find interesting about the Tyvar and Kaya dynamic is they are basically two different eras of planeswalkers in terms of their mindsets and experiences. These eras I speak of are Pre-Mending (golden age) and Post-Mending (modern). And its not just them, its how Kaldheim is designed and how different it is from the rest of the multiverse.

Kaldheim is akin to pre-mending planes. Anyone can travel to a plane, planar portals are far more common. Which is why Tyvar doesn't know he ascended because he feels its just normal. Gods, mortals, planeswalkers, they can all travel to one of these various 'realms' aka planes. Its like the premending era when these sorts of stories were common.

The rest of the multiverse is a stark version of that, as only planeswalkers can travel to other worlds. Other people can only imagine from tales told what worlds beyond must be like and never get to see it in their life times.

And with both eras we see two different ideologies butting heads. Took a snippit from the latest story article to demonstrate what I mean.

man... this is a stupid parasitic mechanic....
I mean, just 5 runes, and like 2 cards that mention them? why even bother, really?
Its only parasitic if they don't print more.

In an alternate reality, Flying was only used in the early sets of MTG but Wizards preferred Horsemanship. In a similar yet different alternate reality, Shadow instead of Flying. Just like how equipment (Mirrodin / Darksteel / Fifth Dawn) or vehicles (Kaladesh / Aether Revolt) could have been parasitic because they were only printed then and Wizards instead ran with the idea of Splice and Arcane.

  • posted a message on [KHM] Niko Defies Destiny— TheAsianAvenger preview
They probably had a prototype card that was just foretells matters and made it Azorious. Niko probably evolved over time and wound up defying destiny. Such as Niko not originally defying destiny but being some sort of oracle for it. That gets scrapped and flavor shifts around, but they forget to change the mechanical part. I wonder if the Saga was the original planeswalker card in early design.

She only gains that ability if put into exile from that ability right?
Yep and it has to be by her trigger.

Seems fine in any format that isn't singleton. In singleton formats like EDH, she feels like she is gonna be a deckbuilding nightmare. As ideally you want the boat swimming around, exiling 3 per hit, then playing a land that came from your opponents decks.

But if you prioritize the vehicles first, you have to hold back on playing any lands you exiled with them. Then you need to bounce her boat, recast her, wait till your next upkeep, then exile her so you finally start doing the voyage stuff.

You can hypothetically do this by casting her, cloning her, keeping the fake, returning her to your command zone, then next turn casting the boat.

This is the one god where I wish their backside was a separate card and both had partner.

Pay SSS, get SSS back. At least it can't hit players as that would make it one of the most busted burn spells ever printed. Tap three snow lands, cast Tundra Fumarole, get SSS back, cast another Tundra Fumarole, get even more SSS back, keep doing this until you run out of Tundra Fumaroles or burn spells and eventually mana for the turn.
Since it gives colorless mana, it's extremely hard to chain them. Each Fumerole only pays for 1 of the next, unless you've got a way to filter it... And if the filter isn't snow too, then you'll lose the extra mana for the second onward.
    Quote from Courier7 »
It's pay SSS to get CCC back. It's still mana, for what it's worth. Okay in Limited, most likely.
    Quote from headminerve »
It doesn't work as I guess you imagine it works, you get back colorless mana, not red mana. So you can't cast serveral fumaroles for only 3 mana. Smile
    Fair.

However, one cast of it means recasting the Betrayer King from your graveyard for basically free while also removing a planeswalker or creature from the board. And one cast also equates to one free activation of the new 4/3 manland with vigilance.

What if we printed Fires of Invention but it only costed GG and only worked with permanents and required you to have another creature out?

Iunno bob from accounting, seems kinda feels bad if I can't get its full effect for the turn.

What if we put Scry 1 on the end in case of that?

    Perfection!
