No it isn't. The basement for a normal limited deck is a mix of creatures and removal. Protection effects as well as any further type of archetype specific cards are optional and have to be drafted with a specific reason in mind.
I honestly wouldnt consider either over Daybreak Chimera or Answered Prayers
but growing creatures are usually very scary. Double Strike needs a pumpeffect.
actually i thought the slith was the best of the bunch lol. sure a 1/1 fly for 3 is horrible, but white usually can protect its creatures quite well and can also deal with blockers fairly easy, so this grows reasonably quick i guess
1+2+3+4+5+6 6 attacks until it finishes the 20. so you can say its virtually a 4/X attacker.
i got them from reddit.
Goliath is definitely a big monster for its cmc. but I think its biggest drawback is not the additional cost, but it dies to removal ;D
im very aware of the disadvantages of ramp and for a long time i talked against the use of manaelves, because how similiar they are to lotus petals. i also didnt run signet for years, due to the low curve of my cube and not much to gain from it.
but i was wrong. greens best strategy apparently is to open manaelf into 3 drop into an endless stream of 4 drops and signets all around allowed my cube to play 5 drops at all.
maybe im overestimating the power of red sligh, but the deck seems quite dominant. you dont neccessarily need the ultra aggressive start, because forked bolt, Arc Lightning and burn in genreal allow you to play an early controlgame as well.
so i pretty much answered my initial question myself. its very good to ramp into Mosscoat Goriak and Simian Grunts to block reds 3/2 and when red want to get through it has to and is able to spend an extra card. I wish we see a cmc3 giant spider soon
hm, good point about haste. this only ends up fair, if the opponent won the diceroll though. otherwise you are up 2 turns :o. maybe i should reconsider Goblin Motivator. hmm.
for sure aggressive wants more power.
I just dont want red to stomp everything =< 3 toughness and "autolose" to 4 toughness.
thing is, with me shifting green heavily towards manaelf into 3 drop, it makes me wonder if thats really the best strategy when 3 drops are essentially just glorified 2 drops anyway.
so with the modern games focus on creature combat, reds 2 drops being 3/2s feel like they kinda throw of the statbalance, because they can easily trade with 3 or even 4 drops. this makes me want to add cmc3 2/4s, which in return brings me to cmc3 4/3s as a counter. I think ideally only same cmcs trade with each other?
which means, 2 drops pretty much always traded with 3 drops.
brings me to the colclusion wiz went for power 3 2 drops to still trade with cmcm3 2/3s, sometimes 4 drops but also with 2/x onedrops. leads me to believe we might or need to see more 2/x onedrops in the future and its unwise to run toughness 3 creatures at cmc4. 3/4 should be the new norm.
Cascade counterspell
Benevolent Bodyguard -> Standard Bearer -> 3drop -> Coalition Honor Guard
there are way more weird cards in the old sets that never saw any play and they look so much better..
new frame cards were already designed with drafting in mind, so you more or less end up with a wotc like environment.

Howling Golem
Skaab Goliath
maalfeld twins
ascendant slith
armory of iroas
diamond mirage cycle

But going back to alphas old statbalance it was
cmc1 1/1 Merfolk of the Pearl Trident
cmc2 2/2 Grizzly Bears
cmc3 2/2 Pearled Unicorn
cmc4 3/3 War Mammoth
which means, 2 drops pretty much always traded with 3 drops.
