The randomness is what lets this be red as well as let them push him the way they did.
Haktos's ability basically amounts to rolling a 1d6, treating three of the results as the same, or a 1d4 with 1 being the auto-reroll result. Which what cards have rolling dice to determine a result again? Oh yeah, its the silver-bordered cards. Which means his ability is literally from an un-set. The only way they could print Achilles is putting a silver-bordered effect on him in black-border.

Which you are in agreement with.

Oh you mean from the set that was said to be a testing grounds for ideas that they might use just not sure quite how to execute?

As said the randomness helps the card not be pin-pointed down for removal and such and imo help the card and ability feel red.

I been mulling over this card since he was revealed, and I feel the more elegant solution is just to cut out the RNG part of his text and reworking the protection to have a fixed number.

    Stop being rude.

And thats what makes him a dollar-bin rare. The best cards in magic don't rely on randomness.

As others have this, this card is most similar to Progenitus or True-name but with a slim weakness that your opponent can't predict. While I don't think this will be the next banned card in every format I wouldn't right it off quickly.
I would write it off quickly. While there is the dream of landing a 4 in eternal formats to have a strong wrecking ball like him, its also only 33% chance of that. 66% of the time is the other two possible results which are quiet unfavorable. Probably a favorite with magicians and con-artists who can force a die roll to land on a result they want.

Purphoros crackled with thunderous delight as hot, viscous fluid - the fruit of his creative exertions - erupted all around him, and then showered back down in an impassioned drizzle. "Ahhh, that feels good" he ejaculated.
    7/6 would Purphoros again.

Maybe its just me, but I refer to the rules for Chroma over the rules for Devotion. As Devotion is just a tweaked version of Chroma, but the rules page for Chroma immediately calls out hybrid cards and how you only count once for each of these 'pips'. Also just that Chroma is a better mechanic overall as it doesn't limit design space to just the battlefield.

To really understand Devotion, its Chroma 99% of the time, for the 1% when regarding the Gods its actually Threshold.

Ah yes, the obligatory chaff-tribal rare. Getting Deja Vu over here from Pheres-Band Warchief.

Here is what separates the octopus/leviathan/sea-serpent/kraken tribal from these: It acknowledges it would be dumb to build off one tribe with low synergy. So you might as well consolidate them into one tribal group to maximize effectiveness. Quest for Ula's Temple, Slinn Voda, the Rising Deep, Whelming Wave, Serpent of Yawning Depths. Four cards for four tribes so far.

You know what would make this legendary be better? "Other Satyrs, Centaurs, and Minoatur creatures you control get +1/+1 and haste."
That way yo have a build around-me commander that provides a more interesting deckbuilding experience.

If you think she is good because of the loot ability, she is, but that is more a normal 60 card deck where you aren't constrained by 1-of nonsense which is where people's gripes seem to stem from more.

I think the wording on the blurb is intentionally misleading. I'm betting Heliod saw a glimpse of the gods being overthrown by Demigods/Mortals and chained Klothys to stop it from happening, thereby making it happen by Elspeth or Ashiok setting her free.
You can say that again. Normally it would be fine, we'd get something like story articles and it would make far more sense than a tiny blurb. Practically need a microscope to analyze this story. Though it matters little as I can't fret too much over it.

The statement/blurb about her being strongly against escaping from the Underworld is particularly ironic considering she was chained up there.

I sense she might not see Modern play. She's kinda like the slowest Sulfuric Vortex ever, except she is indestructible, gains life, hates on graveyards, and can produce mana instead. Yeah, she also gives off fixed Deathrite Shaman vibes to me. She might have been playable at 2 mana or post-combat main phase, but I think 3 mana and pre-combat main phase kills her.
Wait, the goddess of destiny wanted to be chained up down there despite not wanting to leave? Whatever floats Klothys's boat I suppose.

The way it was worded in the mechanics article (because we're so starved for story content this early on, everything is source material) was she wasn't chained in the Underworld by her own volition.
I'm more confused that it wasn't of her volition. Was her getting chained down also just part of her own destiny? Like Klothys was destined to just there and wait in the underworld until Elspeth tries to escape from the underworld?

If they were ever going to do a Theros novel, they would have started work on it before the Weisman hate gained steam for that to influence anything.
Maybe they did start it, and that's why there's no novel - because it's entirely possible that given the current situation, they passed another review on it and decided to not release it.
Likely canned in July or August, early September at the latest. Hence why no product announcement about it in mid September.

I am not really sure I understand the measuring of story in word count. Is that an actual criteria? Like, does a set have more story if the marketing team wrote more surface level (and often contradictory) summaries than another set with weekly online stories?

    I don't get it.
Because word count tells you how much content is actually contained. If a planeswalker's guide for Innistrad is 23,000 words, you are reading a novella worth of content. When Theros: Beyond Death only story-related article is 352 words that is a big oof
