The End of an Era

First off, congrats on the 3 - 1 at your FNM and welcome to our thread! I hope you enjoy your stay!

Off the hop, a couple changes I would recommend is that if you have Humans in your local meta you may want to swap out a Supreme Verdict for a Wrath of God. This is to diversify your wrath selection to play around Meddling Mage.

Also, if you're having difficulties hitting double blue for Jace, the Mindsculptor turn four, you may want to cut a basic Plains for a third Hallowed Fountain. You may need to bust out that hyper-geometric calculato too, to find the correct percentage needed for your manabase. I know most lists average 11 blue sources, technically more if you count Field of Ruin or Ghost Quarter.

Maindeck Remorseful Cleric is par for the course as maindeck graveyard hate is a necessity nowadays. I don't think I've seen a Phyrexian Revoker outside of mono white builds and definitely not since Sorcerous Spyglass was printed. It is an interesting inclusion and it technically does have an etb that you can abuse with Flickerwisp or Teferi, Time Raveler. Plus it's a creature, which means it's recursive through an Emeria, the Sky Ruin. Most lists tend to favor Detention Sphere to deal with problematic permanents though, it's extra good in our deck because we can reset it with Flickerwisp or recur it with a Sun Titan.

I think people have played Teferi, Time Raveler in sideboards in the sideboard as an ace against opposing control strategies maindeck he should be fine too. It has a lot of cool synergies with the deck which is nice.

I think using planeswalkers instead of Court Hussar and Spreading Seas as your card advantage engines is also interesting. Teferi, Time Raveler and Jace the Mindsculptor are of course objectively more powerful cards, even with their lack synergy with Emeria. That said, they do play around graveyard hate nicely.

I am a little confused as to why your sideboarding Noxious Revival for? Everything else seems decent but I would personally recommend putting the Crucible of Worlds in main deck as hitting land drops every turn is what we want / need to do.

Good luck in your next matches!

I have to agree, from what I've seen lingering souls usually shows up in decklists that are fair and looking to grind. Think Mardu Pyromancer or Abzan rock.

Although, not being a creature and therefore recurable with Sun Titan or Emeria is a point against it.

What I've been thinking of doing recently is sideboarding a Blast Zone. Then you can swap it out for Ghost Quarter if the matchup warrants.

Plus in the games that go long having access to an extra land is very useful as it helps ensure you hit your land drops on time. Never mind it's utility in the format at large.

Yeah, I could see an entire
new archetype building itself around Vesperlark and doing well.

The hype around RCoE is real and they've only gone up since I first bought them. They'll go back down eventually though.

As for Militia Bugler, I would recommend pulling out your hypergeometric calculator. As, when I first tested it the hit rate was around 40%. So forget about card selection you'll be lucky if he hits.

This is because of three plus power creatures like Flickerwisp and Sun Titan, and your non-creature package.

The 2/3 body with Vigilance is nice though.

It could work but you'd have to redesign your deck. Maybe add Thraben Inspector and replace Flickerwisp with Vesperlark? You'll likely need every creature except Sun Titan to be hit off Militia Bugler.

You could work a UW brew using Militia Bugler, Vesperlark, Phantasmal Imagine and utility creatures.

Maybe utilizing Champion of Wits to set up chains with Phantasmal Image?

By chance have you tried Ranger-Captain of Eos. It's worse without one drops but the sacrifice ability is still very relivant.

Winds of Abandon has also over preformed in my own testing too.

Vesperlark is interesting, please let us know how it does!

I think that when I test Brought Back my mono white list will look similar to this build

    Mainboard: 60
    Creature: 23
1 - Kami of False Hope
    4 - Thraben Inspector
    3 - Lone Missionary
    1 - Remorseful Cleric
    4 - Wall of Omens
    4 - Flickerwisp
    3 - Ranger-Captain of Eos
    3 - Sun Titan

    Instant//Sorcery: 11
    4 - Path to Exile
    3 - Brought Back
    2 - Winds of Abandon
    2 - Wrath of God

    Artifact: 1
    1 - Crucible of Worlds

    Enchantment: 1
    1 - On Thin Ice

    Manabase: 24
    1 - Arid Mesa
    1 - Flooded Strand
    1 - Marsh Flats
    3 - Prismatic Vista
    1 - Windswept Heath
    4 - Field of Ruin
    1 - Ghost Quarter
3 - Emeria, the Sky Ruin
    9 - Snow-Covered Plains

    Sideboard: 15
    1 - Blast Zone
    1 - Burton Forge Tender
    3 - Remorseful Cleric
    2 - Stony Silence
    2 - Damping Sphere
    1 - Sorcerous Spyglass
2 - Gideon of the Trials
    1 - Ranger-Captain of Eos
    2 - Cleansing Nova

So major changes include incorporating an additional three fetchlands. This is to maximize my chance of having two uncracked fetches to trigger Brought Back for turn two. It also means more life loss which means I want to main lifegain i.e Lone Missionary.

I'm trying out On Thin Ice to lower my curve. If it doesn't work wonders I'll go back up a Winds of Abandon, Wrath of God, or Gideon Jura.

I'm not sure if Burton-Forge Tender should just be a Cathedral Sanctifier or Martyr of Sands but BFT synergieses well with this Brought Back build.

Fun cards I want to test beforehand include Mortarpod, Gift of Immorality and Vesperlark. If someone already has experience with the last two, please share.

Sorry about the formatting, I'm typing this from mobile

Sounds awesome, good job and congrats on the 3 - 1! One thing I'll recommend though, in the heavy discard / removal matchups it's good practice to cut any Phantasmal Image, Flickerwisp, Soulhearder because those matches usually detiriorate into top decks. Drawing synergistic pieces on an empty board or getting their targets removed / discarded is terrible.

On another note I watched the rest of the MTG Goldfish stream and was happy he had so much fun. Saffron Olive, got lucky in the matchups and individual matches but ended up with a 4 - 1. Even with some questionable sideboarding / lines of play!

That's awesome! I'll be catching the replay later too, I hope he had a ton of fun with it!

I always liked Mortarpod for all it's neat fringe utility. Other than that it's good against affinity too, and I imagine okay in the early game against Hardened Scales as well.

So the more I think about brought back the more I like it. I think I'll test it as a three to four of first to get a feel for it.

I also think I'll need to add more fetchlands either that or go back up to four GQ with three copies of Flagstones of Trokair. This is because GQ by itself enables two lands for Brought Back. Plus end step double GQ your OP then do it again is game breaking.

Nice that BB also synergieses well with, Kami of False Hope, Remorseful Cleric, and Ranger-Captain of Eos.

    @The Fluff
I think EggcitedBird and Chantu9Y have brought up some good points concerning Cavalier of Squal, and personally I think that the effect is not worth it's steep mana cost. That shouldn't stop you from playing it if you want to though. I also think it may see modern play, I could see it as an easy inclusion in Primespeaker Vannifar pod decks. I would advise upping your fetch-land count to 6 - 7 to be able to guarantee turn five UUU with consistency.

    @Chantu9Y
Brought Back seems interesting, and I'm not sure how to evaluate it, what's cool that I don't think has been mentioned is that it specifies PERMANENT. This means if on turn two you crack two fetches and cast this you jump to four mana and then five on your turn. It could be worthwhile for our climb to Sun Titan and Emeria, the Sky Ruin.

Also, thanks everyone for the congratulations but like I said luck had a lot to due with it. I played against Humans, Phoenix, the new Mardu-Pyromancer, Slivers, and UG Merfolk. So basically all fair creature based aggro and graveyard shenanigans. Which emeria usually beats up on anyway. I was surprised by slivers though, they can kill you out of nowhere with an endstep coco for Manaweft Sliver and Cloudshredder Sliver.

So I played the first league match in a while on magic online last week and ended up going 5 - 0 with mono white emeria! I got lucky with my matchups, and played tight but did get paired against mostly creature based with decks. I had a lot of fun, I'd recommend the decklist to test if you want a change of pace. I'd also recommend cutting Mistveil Plains from the mana base if you play this as it's very clunky.

I personally like Ghost Quarter the most right now, as my colorless land of choice. Blast Zone is very good but definitely clunky, it usually requires you to take off two turns to utilize it. On another note, I'm not against the Leyline of the Void plan but I do like Surgical Extraction and Tormod's Crypt better, to round out my graveyard hate. If you're thinking of playing leyline, I would increase my Champion of Wits count, to have the option to be able to discard a dead one if it gets stuck in hand.

It has potential, Horizon Canopy has always been a good card but I think your right and we'd need to replace a Blast Zone or Ghost Quarter to play it.

Yeah, definitely a good thing about the site. I'll give Gideon Blackblade another shot but I'm still not completely convinced that he's better than an additional copy of Gideon of the Trials.

    @Starstorm
Let us know how your list feels to pilot, it looks pretty cool almost like an amalgamation of everything we've talked about on this thread!

How's Gideon Blackblade treating you, I've been considering him for my mono white list in the past but he never makes the final cut. Also only two Detention Sphere makes me leary, I like removal and having a generic answer to a trouble some permanent(s). That said you do have to cut something for your changes, I hope it all works out!
