  • posted a message on Liliana of the Veil, differences in printings
    Hello!

With the market prices on Liliana of the Veil being really low recently, I figured now is the best time to finally get a play set, because I've been making do with just a single copy for too long.

The one I've had for a bit is the Ulimate Masters set printing. I bought two more copies on tcgplayer of the Modern Masters 17 printing (not through TCG direct though); unfortunately one was a terrible counterfeit. I mean the kind of fake that you don't need to even feel to know it's fake, it just looks that off. Thankfully the seller refunded me right away and I sent the card back to tcgplayer per their request.

The other copy (from a completely different seller) seems fine. The holo stamp has both the planeswalker and mana symbols in there, green dot test, etc. However, the art seems noticeably more faded than the UM version - is this normal? After setting them next to each other the color difference became clear; then you know, the mind games kind of kick in and I start feeling the card wondering if it's too slick, if it smells right, etc. Pretty much I'm just not trusting myself at this point.

tl;dr - is the MM17 printing of Liliana of the Veil a more faded color compared to the UM version?

    Thanks.

So, the competitive tag is probably incorrect - this is more of an between deck; strong cards and some combos, but it's not as focused as it could be. It is definitely no Zur Doomsday/Ad Naus or the like.

Anyway, I'm looking for some feedback. Here's an Esper Mill deck I brainstormed; at 109 cards, it still needs some cuts and tuning; so I'm happy to hear what everyone thinks.

Why Esper instead of Dimir? Well, pretty much because I wanted to, I guess. I do feel like splashing White gives you access to some more tutoring, board control and the like; is that worth it instead of having a Dimir commander? I think so, but tell me your thoughts!

The general idea here is to mill. Mill opponents, mill yourself - you're gonna win either way if Jace, Wielder of Secrets or Lab Maniac are in play. Echo of Eons and Time Spiral are in there in case you go off the rails and need to reset all the self milling, ergo the lack of Rest in Peace. I don't really want to exile my own graveyard.

This obviously leads to some problems - you can't do the Helm of Obedience combo, and cards that function off of how many cards a player has in their graveyard are much less useful if Ashiok / Leyline are running amok.

If you made it this far, thanks!

    Thanks for the feedback!

I'm making a proxy of it today to see how it feels, so I'll post the results here.

First post here, so I hope I'm putting this in the right area with the correct tag.

Anyway, I'm trying to get into Modern and really want to make this Gideon deck work; splashing in Black for more removal and so Sorin can join in to amass some troops as well.

Fetch lands - yay or nay with this?

    Bitterblossom or Lingering Souls?

Too much board wipe? Not enough? More spot removal.

Any chance or way to make this at least semi-competitive?

Looking forward to hearing all the input, thanks!
