A New and Exciting Beginning

The End of an Era

LOVED Pauper and Singleton. They were a refreshing change of pace and being relatively new I had lots of cards I could use and try out and didn't feel like I was just outclassed every match because of my card selection. Even the Ravnica block event wasn't too bad...I thought my deck was bit janky, but it was ok and I didn't hate playing it. Counters and Momir were stupid and felt gimmicky; they were basically a game of chance....I only played them to complete them and didn't enjoy them much.

I like the idea, but this system needs to be fixed first to have real randomness with decks and match-ups. I start the day, hoping to play some of my non-mono-Red decks. Of course, as I am not like apparently all my opponents who have every card imaginable and have found the way to appease the Arena gods so THEY get perfect cards in their hands along with perfect distribution of lands. I, on the other hand, constantly get savaged. one way or the other - No lands, too many lands, wrong lands in dual color deck, or just my opponent has just the optimal match-up to tear apart anything I have. And when I say constantly, I mean CON-STANT-LY.

For example, this morning, wanted to test out a Boros deck. 3 TIMES IN A ROW, ran into a Gruul deck, with perfect land distribution, multiple spellbreakers AND multiple Nissas (Id kill one and the second Nissa popped out next turn. All very early in the game.

In the end, I get forced to go back to playing Mono Red just to have a chance at winning. So, my point being, if the game didn't force me and others to continuously play Mono Red, there would be fewer Mono Red opponents.

I 100% agree with Sardo. The problem is not mono red in and of itself, the problem is the forced match making you get with other decks. I am SICK of playing mono red; believe me. I start every day playing something else, but after playing ridiculous match ups for an hour or so and only grinding out one or two wins, its back to red because I cant play the game all damn day to try and get some of my daily rewards.

Seriously, my lifetime win percentage is in the mid 60% range....my win percentage with anything but red is like MAYBE 30%...with red probably about 70-75%. This is the problem....

And I'm not even playing janky decks...just that I get completely un-winnnable match making almost every time. Heck I just built an Izzet Drakes deck using a top tier list and I am like 5-22 with that deck.

  • posted a message on I strongly suspect their is some deck-based matchmaking happening
Ok so I am pretty new to this game....only been at it about 2 months. I thought maybe there was some kind of loose matchmaking, but holy hell now that I really see how bad it is I already am hating this game hard.

I spent the first few weeks getting spanked with my newb decks, that's a given, but didn't really experience any really powerful decks. After a bunch of grinding and drafts for a few weeks I managed to put together a nice mono red deck (as I suppose most new people do). When playing with this deck I see Esper control or super friends about 70% of the time, sometimes a mirror, and a few others of the more popular decks (but not many). I got tired of these same match ups over and over and went back to the grind for a month; now I've completed an Izzet Drake deck. Much to my dismay the meta then COMPLETELY changed for me. All I've seen are some kind of ridiculous control decks (I don't even know what they are, I'll have to research them), and green stompy or Golgari midrange. I have probably seen these decks a total of about 5 times before out of thousands of matches with my mono red.

This just really pisses me off. I spent so much time trying to change decks and I get crapped on by something completely different? There's got to be a better way to match people up; maybe rank players instead of decks? I honestly don't care if I'm up against other people with a similar win rate...even if their deck is going to crush mine...I'd rather see a range of different decks to play against than get stuck facing the same crap with a given deck every single time...

  • posted a message on Why does everyone else play RDW so much
I'm in the same boat...I only started Arena like 6 weeks ago, RDW was the easiest to build, so that's what I have. It's also a pretty easy deck to play so I imagine this, combined with the ease of access, is the reason its the most popular.

TBH I'm already super bored of playing the same deck over and over...I wish I could play other decks. I watch for interesting strategies while I play and when I see something that looks fun I look into it further and build a deck with cards that I do and do not have. I have a list of about 20 decks I'd like to build and try out, but ALL of them require a lot of cards I just don't have. Its going to take a lot of grinding and drafting to get what I need...its a major disadvantage for new players. I imagine anyone who has been around the game for a while and has had the opportunity to draft from all the sets will have a great card base to build from. I've only had WAR drafts for the most part, so that part of my collection is pretty fleshed out; RVA draft is coming soon....that's a big need for me.

At least there are sites like Arena Pro where you can enter in craft lists and keep track of things you need...once the game is older I bet the meta is a little more evened out among other decks.

Ya it's pretty bad. I got to platinum super fast this season...then it stalled. Just finally hit tier one today, but I think it has taken me an easy 60 matches (probably more) at platinum to get there. Seem to always get one win away from tiering and the mana screw hits hard for a few.

Ya Gruul is something thats on my list to try, thanks for the recommendation. Funny enough I've seen less control in the last couple days and have been thoroughly stomped by Gruul. I swear the game ramps up the difficulty every time I'm about to tier up.

Sorry didn't realize there was a forum specifically for Bo1 arena :).

Just playing the regular Bo1 ranked. I guess I've seen a fair bit of both regular control with tons of removal AND 5 color super friends.

I actually went on a nice run today...just really depends how fast I can play the red. I need to immediately recognize what they're doing, throw everything at their life points, and if it gets past turn 5 I'm probably done.

I've only recently gotten back into magic, and I've been playing Arena everyday for the last 6 weeks or so I guess. I was only able to rank to gold in the first season with weak decks. This season I managed to build a nice mono red deck that plowed through everything...till now. I'm in Platinum and it seems like 3/4 matches are against Esper control. I can beat it sometimes, but that annoying deck usually just slow plays me to my doom (I'm just constantly living in fear of a board wipe to end me lol).

I want to build a new deck to try and push through these control decks...what's the best at dealing with it? Being that I'm pretty new I don't have a ton of depth in my cards, so I sort of have to prioritize what I get and build towards 1 thing...I don't have the luxury of trying out different strategies to see what works (yet).

Hi all. I'm just getting back into magic after a LONG hiatus (I haven't played since Arabian Nights when I was a kid). I have been reading a lot to trying and get up to speed, but one thing I'm wondering that I can't seem to find is this:

When the standard rotation happens, are there cards that have been commonly reprinted, and can you continue to use the other versions of that card? For example, I have Luminous Bonds from a couple sets...is that sort of a mainstay that keeps getting reprinted? If this is the case, what are The typical cards that stick around?

    Thanks!
