You'd think they'd be just as aggressive with banning problematic cards in Modern with how expensive the format is where mana bases cost a fortune as opposed to Pioneer where Fetches are banned.
Enemy fetchlands are surprisingly at relatively affordable levels for the first time in a long time, ranging from $15-20 compared to the $30-80 they used to run. Allied fetchlands are still are in the $25-40 range but they're one Masters set away from dropping as well.
Standard was always about forcing players to keep purchasing new sets so they can play in tournaments. Secondarily it was to make the new cards relevant to competitive play where otherwise the cards wouldn't be on the level to use in older formats. To that effect it was the most supported competitive format historically. But now we have modern-legal new sets such as the LotR set coming up, as well as the horizon sets, so pushing standard so much loses some of it's purpose. With all that said, Commander has for years now taken the throne as the most played format, because simply there are a lot more casual players than competitive players. Competitive Commander (CEDH) on the other hand is a tiny fraction of the Commander playerbase, and I'm not sure WotC knows how to pivot into CEDH, especially when casual Commander keeps products selling so well.
This set absolutely fails in it's 'mission' to give an epilogue on the story that they've been building up for the past few years. What it does succeed in is selling us less (5-card packs) for more $. I guess with Secret Lairs they learned they can sell us tiny amounts of cards for the same amount if not more. Hasbro really makes me not want to follow this game anymore.
Perhaps an unpopular opinion but I've always been an enjoyer of color-hoser cards, Choke, Chill, Light of Day, Perish, being a few of my favorites from times past. It's nice to see strong sideboard choices brought about once more.
Awesome card, a shame it has a mana value of 5 and a 4/4 token instead of something like a mana value of 2 or 3 and a smaller incubator token, because this sort of thing could have helped enable a new archetype in constructed now that we have so many different types of transform cards from over the years.
Wait, flip cards like pathways and the Kaldhiem gods don't trigger this thing, right?
