A New and Exciting Beginning

The End of an Era

None of the chosen characters really do it for me. I want a new Tezzeret. Chandra and Gideon are pretty cool I guess.

  • posted a message on Why does tribal count as a card type?
I believe that each type (super, sub or otherwise) has a reason for being what it is.

Snow is a Super Type because it can be associated with any card type, lands, creatures, etc. Just like Legendary. It is worth noting that Snow Permanents that produce mana can produce S.
Basic is a Super Type to avoid issues that would affect something with a specific subtype. If you could change Boil to destroy all Basics there would be a problem.
Tribal is a Card Type because it is meant to associate creature types to non-creature cards. This is the way they decided to make it work within the rules. There was a lot of argument back in Lorwyn as to why they did it this way but it was basically agreed that it was just how the rules decided to work. It might have been interesting to make Tribal a Super Type (use a different name) that could associate odd sub types to cards although Creatures have by far the most sub types so making it less complex by just doing them makes a lot of sense.

In addition if card's Types change they may lose associated sub types but super types remain.

The Basic Land types also have rules meaning. They all add "T: Add X Mana to your Mana Pool" (where X isn't X but replaces the color the land type makes) to the card.

It isn't perfect but it is what the comp rules say.

Sorry to sound stupid, but if you open it, why can't you keep it? Isn't that the point of sealed, you keep your pool?

At competitive REL sealed you open a pool, record what you opened and then pass it along to another player. Part of why they do that is to prevent people from cheating by bringing in whatever busted rare is in that set and then claim they opened it. Ideally, you can achieve that same result by having judges or tournament organizers open all the pools and then passing them out, but you're not going to have several dozen people open and record hundreds to thousands of pools.

So if I understand this correctly, I could open a great pool (foil Goyfs aside) with just lots of strong commons and uncommons and maybe a cool rare or two of no major value but the deck has solid synergy and some nice sideboard cards, but would ultimately be stuck with some other person's pool that could be complete and utter garbage?

Basically although I don't look at it that way. Also you could be the guy who opens and registers a garbage pool and gets to build and play and keep the pool with the good cards in it.

I'm curious if Promos are real cards to you. Also how do you feel about the cards that are unique to Conspiracy and the various Commander/Planechase decks.

Seems like it would benefit Control a lot. I would think that Control has less of a downside to being on the draw. They would never drop a card to go first but they would gladly let you go to six if you wanted to.

Since we are basically at an impasse at this point a thought occurred to me and I was wondering what you felt about Conspiracy and Commander Pre-can Decks.

I understand where you are coming from but Modern Masters isn't entirely reprint for reprint sake. If it were they would not have put time and resources into making it a viable draft format.

The cards are as real as any other. Are you going to accuse someone of cheating if they use them? Will you refuse to play with them?

We had this on something like 4 cards out of a box we drafted. It was on the foil sheet. I got a Foil Scion of the Wild with discoloration.

They use their main printer for the sets and other printers for side products.

They could just have over 9000 people register and have them be the top two events.

Won't be used again. They did revisit it in Rise of the Eldrazi.

Shapeshifter is a creature type. Instants can't be Shapeshifters nor anything else.

Original Modern Masters looks more fun to draft. I'm sure I will like drafting MM 2015 but it doesn't look as good.

You can't associate subtypes to other subtypes or super types. There are also specific subtypes that match to card types. Creatures and Tribals share their list. Instants and Sorceries share a list. Enchantments, Planeswalkers, Artifacts and Lands have their own unique lists.

Crib Swap can't have all creature types without being either a creature or a tribal. Since it isn't a creature it has to be a tribal.

You paid $75 for the registration fee and get your playmat/promo/packs. You crack them, knowing full well you have to ship the pool after logging the pulls, and see a Tarmogoyf. Do you drop from the event?

I can see both sides. You are "cash-flow positive" so to speak, so dropping is the smartest move. On the other hand, maybe you didn't take days off work and fly in for the weekend just to play in side-events. Is there anybody who wouldn't take the Tarmogoyf? Do you weigh your own skill and odds of making day two as part of the decision?

Can't you just pick the goyf from that pool and continue the draft?

We are talking about Day 1. Sealed Deck portion.

I have been having this conversation. You have to be kind of lucky to make enough on a pool that it is worth dropping. You need 2 or 3 Specific Rares or Mythics. If you don't get Goyf because it alone is probably worth it. I would probably drop and go draft or something. Flipping that card to a dealer would probably keep me in drafts all weekend.

You have to get really lucky in draft. Foil Rare that is one of those top tier cards in addition to your Rare being one too.
