There was a non-flash creature with "ambush" in its name printed just a few sets ago. Also, there's been an enchantment called "Sneak Attack" for ages.
It's still an ambush if the creature getting punched didn't expect to get punched before you cast the spell. The only flavor fail I see is when you get blown out when they have instant speed removal.
Basically Ravnica is using a spirit bomb and stopping Bolas. I hope it's not as simple as these cards suggest or that's a big let down for story telling.
If you're expecting any kind of depth other than "protagonist vs. antagonist, protagonist wins" in MtG than you're going to be sorely disappointed.
Hour of devastation.
To be fair Hour of Devastation was basically the first half of this storyline where it leads up to Nicol Bolas dying at the end of this one. Common trope that the villain wins at first only to lose in the end.
Eh, they already missed their chance for Dovin's Ban. I guess that the creation team isn't fond of name puns.
Telim'Tor (Mr Toilet) and Telim'Tor's Darts (Mr Toilet's Darts). Puns and anagrams in card names used to be more common, until the card designers were basically told to knock it off.
LarryNiven's Disk and GarfieldPHD, too. I think it's fun to find stuff like this and wish they would keep doing it on occasion.

As for the card, very nice card. I've been wanting to do an animated land deck for commander for a while.
Your post just made me think about using this on Arixmethes, Slumbering Isle while it's a land, which sounds absolutely hilarious. When it "wakes up", it's a 21/21.
I feel like they missed out on not calling this Domri’s Raid.
