I was super happy to see Slimefoot as the focus of this episode. I really expected him to be less friendly due to the flavor text in the set. The few inconsistencies threw me off a bit but I still liked the story, I just hope we see more of Slimefoot.
I was already excited to build a commander deck for it, but now I'm even more excited.
Yes I meant those. And while I'm thinking about it the Battle Lands could also use the enemy color cycle being completed. I really like having fetchable lands.
I play Dragonspeaker Shaman in my Bladewing the Risen deck. It has actually earned its keep. My dragon deck is pretty casual, despite the expensive lands. I use the shaman along with Sneak Attack and Quicksilver Amulet to get Dragons into play cheaper than usual. This deck has been my casual go-to deck for years after being adapted from a 60 card deck. It never gets old playing with big dumb Dragons, cheating them into play using reanimation or the other cards mentioned always brings me back to being 15 playing magic for hours on my bed using a stop sign for a table.
One deck I've always wanted to build is Ob-Nixilis, the Fallen which I think would be an amazing home for Scroll Rack. Playing all of the fetches plus Black's plentiful tutors can potentially allow for a fresh look on most turn. I've never built it because I don't have the extra fetch lands at this time and I don't feel that the deck would be good enough without all of them.
I love Scroll Rack it needs a bit of help in the form of shuffle effects but those can usually get covered with fetch lands and tutors. Self mill and looting are also helpful to get to fresh cards.
After playing prerelease, I came here to say I'm excited to brew a Slimefoot, the Stowaway. He performed very well in limited, and I think he will be decent as a general!
Awesome! I've been looking at him a lot the last day. I have a ton of the old Thallids and other good cards for the deck already. I could probably get it together and only spend about $50 on the handful of things I would need. I already have the Doubling Season, Parallel Lives, Phyrexian Altar , Ashnod's Altar and an expensive mana base. Heck I think I even have an extra Demonic Tutor from the duel deck. I could build this "on a budget" and still end up with an "optimized" version.
I've been reworking my load out of decks recently and Dominaria is looking like it is going to have a pretty big impact on my lineup. Jhoira might become my artifact commander replacing Daretti, Geth is probably going to get cannibalized for Slimefoot and Bladewing the Risen looks like he will remain (for now until he gets taken apart and rebuilt to restart the cycle that has been in place for nearly a decade).
Right now I'm going straight legends beatdown. He's going to be more casual, a 3/3 for 5 with no combo potential and no CA will tend to do that, but there are plenty of cheap legends in the colors that have solid abilities that start to become real spicy when they get +2/+2. You already mentioned both Thalias, having those abilities on a 4/3 First Strike for 2 and a 5/4 First Strike for 3 is nuts. Flip Gideon becomes a 4/3 activated indestructible for W. Isamaru is a 4/4 for W. The various 2 drop Samurai are 4/3s and 4/4s for 2 with Bushido. Teysa is a 4/5 for 3, with great abilities. Ayli is the same but for 2. Granted, they aren't that if you cast them on curve, but you play them out then drop Arvad. There are other anthem legends in the colors, like Palla, Kongming, and Ravos, and two of those hit before Arvad. I find that I'm always building Orzhov as combo or control or high synergy good stuff, so going straight up beats and just throwing a motley collection of heroes and villains at faces sounds like a blast.
This was my first idea for the deck. Then I remembered that I have a bunch of extra reanimator stuff laying around.
I had 5 decks for a time but I felt spread too thin with that many. Now I usually have 2-4 with 3 being the most common. I always have one deck that is my "competitive" deck, right now this is Daretti, Scrap Savant. I also have a deck that I guess you could say is 75%, it has a fairly high power level but doesn't crush tables (usually), this is Geth, Lord of the Vault for me right now. Then I have a deck that is built for pure janky fun, right now this for me is Bladewing, the Risen.
I love to brew new decks so my decks tend to fluctuate. Daretti is brand spanking new, I haven't even finished it yet, it replaces my Jor Kadeen, the Prevailer stax build. Geth is in charge of a deck that changes commanders and strategies frequently. Right now it is more controlling with lots of Wrath effects and discard, not long ago it was Chainer, Dementia Master etb reanimator. Bladewing has been around forever and likely will be, even when I take it apart it comes back stronger, harder, faster, better.
Right now I'm brewing a few Dominaria legends but haven't settled on anything yet.
Second Rona. She just does so much since she cares about historic. Just the ability to build U/B legends is interesting. Arvad to for a straightforward W/B legends deck. Sisay just pushes you too easily into combo wombo land, so having a few new legends matter generals is nice. Arvad in particular is interesting because he makes you reevaluate a lot of meh legends when you get to look at them with an extra +2/+2 all the time.
I have been toying with the idea of using Arvad to lead a Legend Reanimator. Both versions of Thalia, Black Mirri, Drana v2, Volrath, so on and so forth.
I still play Beacon in my big mana Black deck. 5 mana is a lot for a reanimate but having it get artifacts from any grave makes it worth it to me. It may be worth noting that the deck I am playing it in is pretty laid back so janky stuff like this is right at home. For me Beacon is what Commander is all about, using big splashy spells to make big crazy plays that just can't happen in other formats.
2.5/5 just barely playable and fun, but outclassed by too many cards to shine.
I am thinking about making Josu Vess the commander of my mono black deck. Currently I use a rotating lineup of Drana v1 Geth and Xiahou-Dun in a big mana control shell. I like that Josu can come down fairly early with some help and get straight to menacing his way through the red zone. Or a few turns later he can come in with the cavalry to really cause some havoc. I will probably change up the build a bit to better support a single general but I'm not sure how quite yet.
