Jun 3, 2009Machine Messiah posted a message on (massive spoilers!!!) Thoughts on A Storm of Swords by George MartinI hear you. I wasn't going to start AFFC after hearing similar warnings, but I've decided to do it anyway. I think A Dance With Dragons will be George Martin's last A Song of Ice and Fire book.Posted in: Machine Messiah Blog

Mar 12, 2009Machine Messiah posted a message on (Spoilers) Thoughts on Neil Gaiman's Anansi BoysYep, Daisy! I didn't mention her because I couldn't think of anything clever to say. Her placement in the stories of the other characters was interesting but, like Rosie, she is a very "reactive" character.Posted in: Machine Messiah Blog
Mauve's character was pretty good too...she was the stereotypical "widow of a celebrity" in that she wasn't very world-wise. I thought the ending of her storyline was very sweet.
Also -- the penguin candles! Loved it! -

Yeah, I have been a big fan of Terry Pratchett for several years now, but I still haven't read all the discworld novels. I do want to pick up Good Omens as soon as I'm able to.
I like your description of your surroundings while reading Neverwhere. Interesting environment, it sounds like... - To post a comment, please login or register a new account.
Hahaha. Honestly I don't get why he keeps bringing that up. He seems defensive about it, lol.
If I ever got a job as an announcer for one of these things, I'd wear three jackets on top of each other and a t-shirt underneath. ;p
EDIT: On a positive note, I do like these extras they're doing, about R&D...very cool. I like how excited Mark Rosewater gets!
I actually haven't seen the UW master of waves deck, but I've seen mono-blue devotion running it. It seems like the more relevant card in that deck is Thassa, God of the Sea and evasive fliers. But, I guess I need to see more of Master in action.
I tend to agree -- I think the decks we're seeing at the pro tour today is a result of the pros trying to "outsmart" each other by countering each other's decks.
I've watched three matches so far. Olle Rade played an R/G midrange deck against Sam Black, who was playing that mono blue devotion deck. That deck is here: http://magic-league.com/deck/82917/standardt2.html#MonoBlue Fish126890 with a few modifications. Bident of Thassa has been better than I've thought, and it's drawn a lot of cards for people who have played it, thanks in part to evasive creatures like Nightveil Spectre and Judge's Familiar.
I also saw Patrick Chapin playing a B/W midrange deck that was more of a white weenie deck IMO. It ran the usual hero's downfall and doom blade but it ran precinct captain and soldier of the pantheon. After those early creatures, he had Desecration Demon and Obzedat, Ghost Council It seems like weird deck, but seems to work as a good metagame call vs these devotion decks.
It appears that the mono green devotion deck from last week's SCG has morphed a little bit into a red/green deck (the red splash for domri). It seems very strong. One player (forget the name) is actually main decking garruk, too.
Jon Finkel is playing Sam Black's mono-blue devotion deck, as are most of the SCG people.
I get the impression that a lot of these devotion decks would get beaten by the right kind of control deck employing Essence Scatter and Detention Sphere.
I'd like to know the answer to that too. I know that they put them up here http://www.starcitygames.com/pages/decklists/ eventually.
I do really like that mono green deck, wow. That UW deck did have some bad cards for that matchup, though. Didn't like the Yoked Ox or Fiendslayer Paladin.
The BUG deck is super weird...but hey it is 3-0 so far...
EDIT: Whip of Erebos is doing some SERIOUS work today. The lifelink AND it's activated ability have helped...the ability has given some extra reach to decks to get those last points in, and the lifelink allows you to attack and not worry about the counterattack so much...
Will Esper and RDW continue their reign of terror, or will a midrange deck emerge on top?
The standard event begins at 10 AM EST on October 5 (Saturday).
I'd reconsider whether Stormbreath Dragon is necessary for RDW. I saw a number of lists from last week's SCG where 4 drops topped the curve for RDW, particularly the tournament winner
Anyway, I wonder if Jace, AoT is really as dominant as we're seeing today, or is this just hangover from RTR block play?
Thanks a lot!
