Undergrowth isn't flashy, but many of the effects are powerful and if enough bodies are in the yard, you get a significant discount on the effect. It's pretty powerful if built around.

    Oh snap, just saw this.

I wrote a Magic gifting article on just this very topic over the weekend. By all means, check it out and let me know what you think.

That said, from doing the research and breaking things down, the conclusion I came to is the Guild Kits just cannot be beat. The value WOTC crammed into those boxes is insane when you think about it. The decks are actually playable, have some really decent reprints and come with some valuable standard cards to help ease you into a new deck if you wished. Add in little extra like the pin, sticker and don't forget those alt art lands which are beautiful and sure to go up in value. 25.00 MSRP is way too low if you ask me.

Deck builder toolkits are neat for super new players, but in the long run, the influx of commons and uncommons it mostly contains aren't helpful. If you just want cards then a Booster Bundle may be best. 10 packs, a spindown and a storage box ain't bad when you are getting back into the game.

    Hope that helps. Good luck!

    Hey all,

Long time magic player and member of the board from long ago who seems to have lost his old account to Twitch.

These days I a ma freelance writer and I managed to convince my boss to write a Magic themed gift giving guide for the holidays. I know the game and all the products WOTC puts out can be confusing to parents and new players alike. So I tried to make a simple list on essentials every player needs, or needs more of. I doubt it will be helpful to enfranchised players however as you all know about this stuff.

That said, if anybody had any suggestions on things I could add or may have missed I'd be glad to see if I can make some changes. Thanks!

    Prerelease.

New cards that nobody has experience with. Laid back, casual atmosphere. Fun with friends and people of all skill levels in attendance. Also, a very forgiving prize pool at many stores. The only time I play in a store is for prerelease.
