Gruul Storyteller posted a message on [KHM] Leak. Vorinclex, Monstrous riderThe answer to what plane a Phyrexian should invade is: Yes.Posted in: The Rumor Mill
This is because Phyrexians are meant to be multi-planar level threats that are a fusion of various sci-fi horror stuff like Alien and the Borg. It doesn't matter what that world is as that plane will be assimilated and compleated.
Remember the stuff with Emrakul on Innistrad? That is of a similar level threat, but instead of being an eldritch monstrosity with unknowable motives aside from hunger, the Phyrexian's strive for perfection in compleation and will force this perfection on others.
Or that stuff with Nicol Bolas decimating an entire plane then taking its survivors and turning them into what he believed as the perfect army through mummification and lazotep plating? That is like a cute science fair project in comparison to what Phyrexians are.
The biggest difference between Phyrexians, Nicol Bolas, and Emrakul though is fairly simple in terms of multi-planar level threats: Nicol Bolas and Emrakul's vision lives and dies with them, not literal death mind you but in their abscene. The Phyrexian's vision however is an instinctual dogma and to battle an ideology is harder than to battle simply a big bad threat.
Yawgmoth died, we thought his vision died with him. But when the oil in Karn's heart leaked onto what we knew as Mirrodin at the time, that created a new breed of Phyrexians with the same core beliefs of 'all will be compleated' as though nothing had changed even though they are divorced from Yawgmoth himself. The vision lives on. The only infighting came from the fact that there was no Father of Machines to guide them, so we had five praetors who took different roads for the same destination.
Thank you for coming to my ted talk about Phyrexians. -

You don’t know how long they’ve played the game. Or how long they’ve lurked on the forums before joining.
What your doing is the thing you claim to hate....your gatekeepeing. -

This can easily be solved if reliable answers from days of yore were reprinted with earnest. Remember M11 standard? Bolt was there. Were there any out-of-control decks at the time? Not that I can recall. At least they brought Disenchant back over Naturalize...
This is also a telling sign of the neglect WotC has put into the designing of standard-level sets and focusing too much on auxiliary products. But that's the result of having so many formats that require product support. They reap what they sow...

Prettymuch!
They got a lot of feedback from bad players that they hated having their stuff interacted with, and now all of the threats are completely out of control. Answers have never, EVER ruined a format, and should be leaned upon heavily to regulate them. People like playing with powerful threats, so let them! Just make sure there are efficient answers to those threats at all times.
Honestly, something like '1W Sorcery Exile target creature.' should probably just be evergreen. Not so efficient or flexible that it invalidates archetypes, but strong enough that you can't just jam a threat and expect it to stick around for the rest of the game. No-frills 4-cmc wraths should also be a constant, since the aggro decks nowadays are inarguably fast enough to warrant it.
THIS! This is the exact reason I stopped playing standard nearly 5 years ago and why I have not touched it since. It really does feel like there are just threats and no answers, you just to out threat their threats with more threatening threats. I love EDH for the specific reason I get to have answers in my deck that don't force me to jump through hoops or expend all my resources to fix a problem. Swords to Plowshares, Path to Exile, Wrath of God, Damnation, Counterspell and even some weird niche things like Cannibalize, these are all incredibly healthy cards to include in a format as it forces smart play. I remember having to play along side cards like counterspell in standard and it didn't make me frustrated it made me a better player. It made me learn how to bait the removal and counters, throwing some cards to the wolves to force misplays, and it always felt so rewarding when I got to resolve the real threat after. Adding cards like that to standard is really something the need to be willing to try again. -

Honestly, I wish MTG would acknowledge that when abstract, eyesore artwork is the focus, it's unpopular. People like fantasy to be remarkable but still relatable - hence why humans perform best in market research. If Eldrazi can ruin a plane as beloved and admired as Zendikar, then it's an indication of what Kami art could do to an otherwise popular setting like Kamigawa. And if Zendikar has a second shot at getting it right and recreating the original Adventure World vibe before ROE independent of Edlrazi, Kamigawa could easily fill the niche of Japan World with the plane, its geography and aesthetic being the foundation for a Japanese world. Eldrazi left Zendikar, the Kami War is over. Have development cost cards more aggressively, return popular aspects of the world (Moonfolk, Ninjas, Samurai, etc) and supplement with Japan World tropes. The physical plane is MTG's take on Japan. It's just a matter of having the right focus, the right aesthetic and good mechanics.Quote from m_pathogen »Quote from Tiro of Meletis »
Bring back Ittoku. I loved his work and that of several Japanese artists in the original Kamigawa. With the Kami War over, there's less of an emphasis on abstract, alien art like Kami manifestations and the plane can focus on being MTG's take on Japan now.Quote from ChampionSilvos »Innistrad seems like a sure bet. I'm hoping for something truly surprising though, like a return to Lorwyn/Shadowmoor or Kamigawa. They could do something really special with Kamigawa by having only Japanese artists do the card art and maybe even have a Japanese artist in charge of the art direction to revamp the aesthetic of the plane to make it more palatable for general consumers.
Ittoku and Shishizaru are two of my favorite magic artists. -

DJK3654 posted a message on [ZNR] MaRo's Zendikar Rising teasersOkay, so I was looking into it and I'm thinking "the return of four mana symbols that have each only ever been used on two cards before" has to be the twobrid/monocolor hybrid mana. There are four monocolor hybrid cards- Advice from the Fae, Beseech the Queen, Flame Javelin, and Tower Above, plus Reaper King. That means each of those four different coloured twobrid symbols has been used on one of the four cards and on Reaper King, hence each used on two cards. I looked into high numbers of generic mana as well to see if there were four numbers that had only been used on two cards, but I could only come up with 15 on Emrakul, the Aeons Torn and Mox Lotus and that's counting Un-cards (13 appears only on Emrakul, the Promised End and 16 only on Draco), so I'm almost 100% sure twobrid will be in ZNR.Posted in: The Rumor Mill
EDIT: Ok, so for some reason Spectral Procession doesn't have its reminder text for twobrid included in its oracle text on gatherer, and so it doesn't show up when you search for the twobrid reminder text. I actually have a sinking suspicion MaRo has made the same mistake, because other than this fact monocolor hybrid fits so perfectly to this hint and I can't think of literally any other possibility than twobrid. It could also be that only four colours get twobrid cards in Zendikar Rising (hence only four of the symbols return), but that seems unlikely. -
