Well. Firstly. Sideboard out Shield of the Oversoul against Faeries. It's not the two-for-one that's the big deal in this match. They hardly ever play it like that. Getting a Shielded dude Sower'd is the worst possible situation. Purely advantageous to them and you're screwed.
My list is different. Focusing on the to-the-head point of play but with a slight edge against Faeries for the first match.
Faerie hate is fairly crucial. The match-up is going to be seen a lot so it's likely you have to tech for it. So against Faeries I side in: 3 Squall Line, 1 Cloudthresher, 3 Krosan Grip, and 3 Oversoul of Dusk. I take out 4 Shield of the Oversoul, 2 Heartmender, and 4 Safehold Elite. It hasn't steered me wrong yet. Hexhunter is pretty good game one and an evoked Cloudthresher can easily seal the deal.
The build is sixty-one cards, and twenty-one land. Treetop Village not only slows a potential one-drop, but it can slow down turns one, two, and three, consecutively. Slowing down aggro speed is detrimental and a bad situation. You want to come out swinging and take it all home as fast as possible. It's the speed and pressure that gives the deck an edge. That's how I won an FNM on Friday, and I'll keep trying it like this for awhile before Regionals.
Personally, I'm not a huge fan of the wishboard for this deck. I like Glittering Wish, don't get me wrong, but it's pretty slow when you just want to rush your opponent.
Cloudthresher applies more pressure and is far more tricky than Raking Canopy, as well. You can remove champion targets via Cloudthresher, maybe forcing them to champion the Bitterblossom, and it gets it out of the way anyway. At least for a little while. They can Cryptic Command on Raking Canopy (I know it applies to Cloudthresher, as well) and swing the game, it'll happen. But Cloudthresher gets in there on turn four to make a dent in the board position.
It's pretty possible for this deck to already survive one or more board sweepers during any game, for a few reasons. Being persist, Shield, and the fact that you play far more creatures than spells, or land. Twilight Shepard has a pretty decent cost tacked onto it, and a strength the original list has is resistance to Fulminator Mage and Magus of the Moon. In my opinion, I prefer the basis of the original list over the wishboard versions, because I see it as slow.
Thanks a lot, Le_Gambit. The new banner looks much better, and I appreciate the patience you had with me.
My only problem now is the fact that I can't get my avatar set. I'm doing what I think I should be doing (I'm not new to forums in the least bit, and even was a co-owner/administrator), but it's not actually working. Any insight would be appreciated.
I love it, except that I can't see Fulminator Mage very well. Maybe, if you have the time, we could try for a five-point arrangement instead? That's up to you, and I don't want to be a bother.
I just said that I was kinda looking for an avatar to match my screen name.
As for a banner. I could actually go for Tarmogoyf, Fulminator Mage, Wilt-Leaf Liege, Kitchen Finks, and Bitterblossom arranged in any design you'd see fit, rather than just a standard signature banner.
Looking forward to seeing what you come up with. I'd want to give you as much creative freedom as I can.
My team has tested this deck extensively, and unfortunetly it's really good at losing.
QFT.
And in regards to a split second spell screwing it all up?
Krosan Grip and Sudden Death do the trick in amazing ways. And both are relevant. Both could easily show up to tear this deck in half. Or if someone Rune Snags the Assault, and Inversions the Swans (Faeries).
Or if Reveillark counters it.
Faeries and Reveillark are fairly dominant, I'd wager.
I can say that the Swans could be a good creature. But this deck hardly deserves a slot in the Competitive forums thus far. Wizards is in, likely, because it won that tournament it showed up in. That's not an easy task from a deck that wasn't even on the "radar" until then.
Coldsteel Heart < Wall of Roots (comes into play tapped artifacts, plus the comes into play tapped lands = slow rolling a slow rolling deck a little much).
One white Akroma is good. Oversoul of Dusk has pro red and black as well, but nothing like abilities that she has.
Garruk speeds the game. If he absorbs damage, then it's good for you. Just like Wall of Roots. Some aggro decks are going to get a lot faster, and Wall of Roots stems the damage, but the same goes for Garruk with three relevant abilities.
The Wishboard is kind of cute. But I'm losing more love for G/W Big Mana Wishboards. Teferi's Moat really is a good option to have game one when you need it. But you should be able to pin down an aggro deck anyway.
Edit: Oh, and Mystic Enforcer < Akroma, Angel of Wrath. The extra mana is worth it with less requirements to make the creature better.
Most problems I've had were against really tuned Elf Warriors decks. If I didn't have the *** turn 3 or 4, it was over. And sometimes, even if I got Wrath I was done for. Once i lost horribly even with two Wraths. Elves can be rough.
That aside. I entered into a Two Headed Giant tournament today and we took first. My teammate was playing Reveillark, and each round was basically a one-sided romp through Candyland.
First round, played against U/B Faeries and RDW. They got us to four, I played Garruk and Chameleon Colossus. My teammate went off and bounced every one of their permanents, dug deep into his deck for a Riftwatcher and discarded it at cleanup. We were at around four million and four at their upkeep.
Second round, played against G/B Treefolk and Kithkin. Kinda had fun with it but still went for the win. I swung with two 6/7 Tarmogoyfs over and over that couldn't seem to get through. Finally I saw an opening on my teammate's side for us to end it. I played Damnation (Modification for the tournament) to kill four of his Mulldrifters, he played and Blinked a Reveillark with two more in hand. Had him dig to a Mirror Entity and swing 'em up.
Third and final round, played against GWB Doran and Kithkin. We set up to Remove Soul his second turn Doran, he played Bitterblossom because he anticipated that. Remove Soul'd it next turn. I hit a turn three Colossus. Played Primal Command after that to put his BitterBlossom on top and gain seven. Dealt with a Mirror Entity and two dudes for awhile until I evoked Cloudthresher (after a Goyf hitting the board). Things just went more and more into our favor with a Cloudskate, a Venser, and two Riftwatchers keeping us floating until we locked solid threats on the board. They scooped when I flashed in Cloudthresher to kill the last real threat on the board after we sucker punched the Entity, then showed them the Crovax, Garruk, Colossus (one on the board), and Tarmogoyf (one on the board) in my hand. Top four cards were ItN, WoR, Tarmogoyf, and Akroma.
Pretty good way to end the night. This is the list I ran (I changed it up pretty heavy for the tournament, considering the rules of 2HG and the deck I had that could support me, with him running 4x ***):
I simply forgot to remove the red sources from the land base before I entered and sat down for the first round. The Damnations were just so we could have eight board clear spells, noticing all of the aggro at the tournament (there were three more controllish decks, we were two of them, the third was RWU Blink). Now I can say I really missed running Garruk in this deck.
I'm going to fit it back to standard tonight and swing by FNM in another town to reap a bit more points.
My accelerators are 4x Into the North, 4x Wall of Roots, and 4x Acid-Moss. Haven't had a problem with it yet. I'd even start some games with two lands, two ItN, and a WoR. Second turn ItN, third turn ItN and WoR. Just gotta fit the proper lands into the deck, which isn't difficult.
For some reason, the site that claims to have the date for New England Regionals has nothing regarding the tournament. Just the Shadowmoor Prerelease, some Yugioh tournaments, and a WoW tournament.
Can anyone give me the date for New England Regionals, please?
1x Vivid Marsh
1x Vivid Grove
4x Reflecting Pool
3x Sulfurous Springs
2x Karplusian Forest
