Ditto. i don't know if it would be too slow with the vertebrae wand as it doesn't trigger steam boi but its a cheap option to dump the top card when experimenting.
There is a pretty sweet combo(ish) with Lazav, the Multifarious, Doom Whisperer, and Dimir Spybug. If you have the Whisperer and spybug in the graveyard you copy Whisperer with Lazav out and put 9 activations of Surveil 2 on the stack and in response to the last one copy the Spybug. Let all of the Surveil 2's resolve, put 9 +1/+1 counters on Lazav, and swing with a 10/10 flying menace.
This isn't something I would advise under normal circumstances but I thought it was pretty neat and the closest to a combo I've seen so far. Got it from Paulo Vitor Damo da Rosa.
a 10/10 flying is nice and all but what about a 10/10 unblockable? if you surveil a mist-cloak herald then copy it after you get your counters. but then for a real combo you could find a way to cheese that unblockable into double strike for 20. but the colors are all out of wack, and takes a ton of mana.
You would need a lot of historics to make him work well as a beat stick.
but a funny though would be to just use his body for other effects like fight or fling.
red green ramp into thud would be pretty hilarious. id call it traxtoss.
at worst its 5 mana for 7 damage. at best with various flickers or historic drops it could be swinging hard constantly.

is the format still to killy for semi mid range buffing with auras? or do you guys feel mentoring once or twice before capping out is still value?

what happens to a token exiled this way with a counter? i have a feeling it wont work with a dousing dagger plants.
