Going out on a limb here, but what about replicate? Since there are three orbs in the art and the sphinx seems to be making them.

Conspire could also work and may be a better fit for the flavor of the set.

I don't think "killing someone who might affect product sales" is "good" writing.

Here's what I think affects this more than "product sales:" the phyrexian storyline is still not built up. We're clearly not getting a phyrexia set this year, and I wouldn't be shocked at the pace they're going with it that we don't see it until 2024. What we are getting is a kamigawa set, and we do have a prominent planeswalker from kamigawa. So to move the story forward and as they've been ramping up the involvement of phyrexia (from tezzeret doing some stuff on kaladesh to a bit of oil on ixalan to whatever was going on in kaldheim to now) on other plains she ended up as the first victim. There's no one else on kamigawa who has any kind of background and we're fresh off a set where the gatewatch were called in to go help fight some stuff.

I agree, it seems like they are establishing a pattern with Vorinclex in Kaldheim and Jin-Gitaxias in Kamigawa where every winter/early spring set will have a surprise praetor or some other reference to New Phyrexia. Which probably means that the actual return to New Phyrexia (or new phyrexia doing a full-on invasion of a different plane) is a few years off.

If I had to guess, the upcoming Brothers’ War set is being done more or less because WotC wants to return to the first storyline where Phyrexia was introduced to introduce new players to the phyrexians and lay the groundwork for Phyrexia’s return as the game’s central villain.

Yeah, might me worth testing in place of a thoughtcast or two in modern and maybe legacy affinity decks. Though it’s arguable that thoughtcast costing U and this costing UU still makes thoughtcast better. For formats like historic that don’t have thoughtcast, I almost certainly think it’s going to replace reverse engineer.

Could also be interesting in UW hammertime builds if there’s a 2cmc artifact creature that can equip stuff for free similar to puresteel paladin.

Added a mana to Kiki-Jiki to prevent shenanigans, I see.

They pretty much had to, since the creature side of the saga isn’t legendary which means it can copy itself and if it didn’t have 1 as a part of its activation cost it would be able to give a player infinite tapped tokens all by itself (which opens up to any number of win conditions through impact tremors-like effects or free sac outlets)

I get the feeling that the original design for this actually cared about the blood tokens that it made, but they took that part out at the last minute because of lack of space judging by how his rules text box is already completely full.

I feel like WotC just needs to bite the bullet on cards like this that care about keywords and actually use the term “keyword” in the rules text of these cards rather than giving a long cramped list of every keyword the card cares about.

Cultivator Colossus can just play your entire deck if you have nothing but lands in it.... right?

There's gotta be something to do with that.

Yes. It can also play out every land in your deck if you have Abundance on the battlefield.

I wonder, does Whispering Wizard trigger when casting the aura side of the new creatures with disturb from your graveyard or is the disturb card still considered a creature spell while it’s on the stack?

I feel like they should increase the mana cost of this and have it deal 13 damage so it could have a more splashy effect. That or don’t have it sacrifice itself and instead let it trigger every time you have 13 permanents on your end step, since you’d need to put in the effort to keep yourself at 13 permanents when getting a 1/1 every turn.

Makes Alrund’s Epiphany smash for 6 (or 7 if it wasn’t fortold), but I’m not sure if that’s enough for it to compete with goldspan dragon in the izzet dragons decks.

A legendary character returns, but now as a Vampire

    Emrakul, the vampire eldrazi.

A gratuitous violence effect for EDH even Arcades, the Strategist & Doran, the Siege Tower decks can take advantage of.

It’s also good~ish against the classes, doesn’t prevent their first ability, but prevents leveling up if it comes down early.

  • posted a message on Dress Down v Dash
I am certain that Ragavan would lose it’s exile ability and it’s token making ability if you cast dress down after Ragavan, Nimble Pilferer enters the battlefield. As for how it effects dash I admittedly am not a judge, but I looked up the rules on the dash mechanic:

702.109a Dash represents three abilities: two static abilities that function while the card with dash is on the stack, one of which may create a delayed triggered ability, and a static ability that functions while the object with dash is on the battlefield. “Dash [cost]” means “You may cast this card by paying [cost] rather than its mana cost,” “If this spell’s dash cost was paid, return the permanent this spell becomes to its owner’s hand at the beginning of the next end step,” and “As long as this permanent’s dash cost was paid, it has haste.” Casting a spell for its dash cost follows the rules for paying alternative costs in rules 601.2b and 601.2f–h.

On the question of if Ragavan loses haste to dress down, I think it does. I’m am pretty sure the “as long as this permanent’s dash cost was paid, it has haste” is a static ability that the dashed creature gains and dress down should remove its ability to check to see if its own dash cost has been payed.

I am also reasonably certain a dashed Ragavan would still return itself to it’s owner’s hand because it is a delayed triggered ability and not a static ability given to the creature. If it was a static ability given to Ragaven it would be worded more like “as long as this permanent’s dash cost was paid, it has return this card to its owner’s hand at the beginning of the next end step.”

If anyone who is more knowledgeable about this thinks I interpreted the rules wrong, feel free to correct me.

The perpetual effects wouldn’t be too hard to do in paper provided everyone is playing with sleeved cards. Stick a very thin piece of paper between the sleeve and the card with whatever effect is perpetually given to the card then go through and remove the paper notes after each game ends, similar to unsideboarding. Downside is that at the start of the game each player would have to deck check their opponent to make sure nobody is cheating, so its doable but not practical.

Honestly I’d like to see a Hullbreacher variant card that simply says “If a spell or an ability an opponent controls would make them draw a card…” and basically have the effect in commander, but remove the ability that lets Hullbreacher’s controller cast a wheel and lock everyone out.
