The End of an Era

More of a political thing than rules-based but anyway here I go. I was playing commander with a couple of friends and early on my friend casts a Skullwinder. We agree that if he targets me to get a Mob Rule to my hand then I won't target him with it. Much later in the game that same friend is poised to win the game with 25 attack worth of indestructible fliers, never mind how but Rite of Replication had something to do with it. With no way of winning otherwise, I cast the mob rule to get all his fliers and killed both other players. My friend then proceeded to get angry that I had broken the deal but if I passed I would have lost. Breaking deals is part of the game right, stab them in the back when it works best for you? The question is should I have done that or should I just have accepted defeat and honoured the agreement. Also is his anger justified and what would you do in my place? Thanks
