I just did this. Cut my proxied duals and have a set of OG shocks and a set of new ones. It's been good for me, and now I don't have to feel goofy about the proxies.
I see. Well I do have the original duals and it for that reason it feels like a waste not using them, that's my primary issue. I don't think it matters all that much to the gameplay if you have duals or another set of shocklands.
On the other hand, selling the duals is not a bad idea right now concering how much they are worth. I doubt however they will get any cheaper, since wizard probably are not reprinting them. And since I'm a student my income isn't all that impressive, selling the duals would make it more affordable for me to get the new cards.
Card aesthetics is something we all value highly. When I began cubing (about 2 years ago) it didn't matter as much to me, back then I just wanted to get ahold of the cards so we could get things moving. As time has gone by, however, I've started to pay more attention to which expansion to choose a particular card from if there are options. And I've realized I like the newer card frame better (I think especially the M15 frame update looks good. I know the majority doesn't agree, but each to his own). Anyways. There are certain old cards that simply don't exist with the new frame, i.e. original duals. I do own all of them and currently run them, however, I figured that one option is to replace the old duals with another set of shock lands. There are 2 sets of shockslands with different art (old and new ravnica) hence, I could play with 2 copies of each shocklands but still they would differ in art.
I do however break the singleton rule, which I don't really like. However, unlike adding another set of fetches, this change doesn't really impact the cube'ing overall (making it only sligtly worse I guess). Also I still probably won't ever be able to replace all the old cards, like Treachery and Rofellos.
I know there isn't any "law" against this kind of changes, again, it's my cube and as long as I approve of the changes and my playgroup, anything goes I guess.
Any thoughts on this change? Has anyone else tried building a "modern" cube without sacrificing the old irreplaceable cards like rofellos, metalworker etc?
There is no universe where playing Tattermunge Maniac over Kird Ape increases "overall cube playability" except as empty phrase-mongering -- in a technical sense, more decks can play the Maniac. Oh wow!
I remember not too long ago there were some discussions on this matter here on the forums; if the horizon canopy lands would ever reprinted for the other color combinations. The answer was no.

Thanks for the article! Love these. I change my cubelist based on your changes, mostly because we play cube very rarely and it's hard to value cards when you don't have the time to play and test. So reading your comments about the added cards is very useful when I have to defend the changes to the playgroup ha-ha.
Good job!
PS. Suprised to see Krenko in the number 1 slot. I believe it's hard to theoretically decide which card is the better, the way you did, because there are almost always factors that you don't think about (i.e. Krenko is weak to Karakas (well, and strong if you happen to run it) - how many pts do that yield, etc). Nevertheless, interesting stuff. DS.
In an unpowered cube, I would avoid Trinket Mage / Tezzeret the Seeker, not enough payoff.
I can see why trinket mage falls short, however Tezzeret the Seeker still seems strong. Untapping signets or bigger mana rocks for loads of mana or finding a good artifact piece which there are plenty of. Not to speak of the ultimate. That said, I obviously haven't tried him or the artifact deck out in the first place, but in theory it looks good.

Haha!
If you're gonna increase the cube size, then to what size?

Well... isn't that exactly the point?

Nice, I see. How has the artifact deck been working out for you?
