First one I did is based on the minimalist land design that I saw on here and absolutely cannot find. If anyone can tell me who that is I'll edit it here because those ones are better than my test run of the paints on the card!
Oh! and ^^ Sakashima the Impostor made me chuckle. Love it!
oh my word someone actually read my post? i'm flattered
In that 'format', (WORDS WORDS WORDS) What it does is it sidelines GY strats. Instead, you'll see a bunch of "normal" combo, aggro, control, like usual. If people started playing GY variants of those, people would start running SB'd nihils. Pretty soon they'd be kept in check, unless they were implausibly strong.
Yeah, I hate that line on Nihil Spellbomb where it says "Nihil Spellbomb is uncounterable." and "Nihil Spellbomb has shroud." I mean, if I could counter the damned thing, or just make them crack it at the wrong time, I think I could make it, but...
When Dark Depths came out did you ever consider it constructed playable?
How many people missed how good Thopter Foundry was when it was spoiled?
How many people were completely wrong on Tarmogoyf?
The point is card combos get missed all the time and as new cards enter a pool new combinations happen. We don't know what will be in M12 or the next set or the next block. A card that appears garbage right now is probably garbage but just needs another synergy down the road to work with. And people can just miss cards completely, especially with the huge amounts of groupthink that goes on around here (and other places).
There are very few Goliath Sphinx in this set. The Johnny junk rares especially always have a possibility of being good down the road.
Right, which means we can only judge off what we currently have, and know, which is the current environment. Now, based off the current environment, a lot of the cards in this set are janky. Therefore, they are not good. If they become good later, fantastic, if they do not, oh well. Just saying everything has potential is like telling every child they are completley unique and special and can do no wrong, which, as shown by the current generation, isn't a great way to pass judgement.
Tarmogoyf was misjudged by ignorance, not because it needed to be "found out." Vampire Hexmage is the good part of Dark Depths, and is good without it, the other way around is not as true. Thopter Foundry is a special case, like Flash, where it's gross interactions with another card let it destroy games, but without the other card, it is just like Dark Depths, not good.
tl;dr: Not every card is good, and acting like they all have hidden potential is just an excuse for being a bad strategist.
If you're running the sphinx you probably don't have a better target for volition reins.
I lol'd like hell at this.
Seriously though, Sphinx is just looking too expensive for what he does. Spending 6 to get 2 cards off the top and make them burn a removal just doesn't look appetizing. In regards to trying to say the two randoms off the top beats the known advantages of Grave Titan is kinda rediculous. Gravy Titan stops aggro rushes, and usually turns the aggro and control roles around, the Sphinx can only attack or block, and get 2 cards a turn, assuming it isn't shot out of the sky.
Don't get me wrong, I like the Sphinx, he might get a home someday, but that day isn't anytime soon in my opinion. Except at scrubby FNMs, where anything can be a Titan, so long as you aren't stupid.
Long time since I checked this thread, sure as hell filled up on me while I was out. Thanks to all the new people, as well as a shop actually opening within walking distance of my house, I cracked out the erasers and markers again. Started on a simple idea I "borrowed" from someone on here that I never got around to actually working on, making basic lands more basic.
Gah, that red symbol is mangled
Still unsure if I wanna reletter the names on them somewhere, was thinking of doing the names in gold or silver, all fancy-like, in the top-left corner. Still haven't gotten around to doing a Plains, flat land is hard to simplify Was thinking a castle might work. Any ideas are super appreciated!

Well, to be fair, it was uncomfortable to have to scroll around so much...
Love the counterspell art, all my local scrublings are gonna go nuts for the 1 mana millstone.
fix'd that list
This is the most rediculous thing I have read in a long time. It's obviously the new Bitterblossom! Simpleton.
Flaming warning issued. -viper
How? If you can encore them, you've already dealt with them?

I did mine with backs out, so it looks a little sleeker. Gonna use it as a play table by throwing a glass tabletop on it.
