This is a tough one to figure out we know the numbers are BS so why are they really stopping FNM promos. Is it to drive away paper players from brick and mortar stores into Magic online.

Between the Ixalan spoilers hinting at some Merfolk support upcoming in Standard, the Merfolk/Goblin duel deck, a doubling up on Masters sets and a tribal Commander product run it seems likely that some needed cards for this deck are going to get reprinted - and seeing as I'm slowly getting the pieces together (Commander fan who just wants a box to open when strangers say they don't play EDH) I was wondering if more seasoned players have any opinions on what's safe to buy now and what would be worth holding off on.

I'm already set for the cheapo Merfolk like Harbinger of the Tides, Master of Waves, Silvergill Adept and a bunch of the little tech and sideboard pieces like Spreading Seas and Mutavault. I honestly don't expect Merfolk in C17 and my money is on two Cursecatchers in the deck for DD MVG and a promo of either of the Lords (preferably Lord of Atlantis with new art!) I think it's reasonable to expect Aether Vial to be in one of the two Masters sets at least, but Cavern of Souls is probably going to be benched considering WotC apparently views it as Mythic now, right? I've heard Spirits mentioned on and off for C17 because of that Taigam guy so I guess it's possible Kira, Great Glass-Spinner could be in that list.

Opinions? Thoughts? Inb4 "no one could possibly know yet dont ask" don't be that guy, I just wanna hear what people are thinking

Merged with the "Modern Prices Discussion" thread. This is an specific post that falls into this thread better than others, and in a way directly deals with the prices of these cards.

I been doing the same picking up the cheaper pieces of merfolk . It's a risk since we don't know what's in the duel deck but I don't want to get priced out of the deck. What isn't in the duel deck is likely going to spike with all the new interest in the deck.

Double-sided cards are more expensive to print maybe this is a way for wizards to justify investing in double-sided printers.

Here's my Boros Burn list, don't think it gets much better than this!

((I doubt Wizards will ever print another R card as strong / stronger than Lightning Bolt))

I'm running the same with one less fetch and one more mountain and 2 bridges in the board instead of exquisite and the molten. Its fun. Still not sure if I could lose anything to get lavamancer in. But I'm trying to figure it out. Thinking its the deck I will be bringing to a 10k tomorrow
you could cut a Searing blaze for a Grim lavamancer a lot of list only run 3 blaze anyways. If you play in the 10k good luck, lets us know how it goes.

Oona's Prowler is one of my favorites it allows you to dump your hand turn 2.

I think Push also has a huge impact on forcing it down. When its easy to remove at parity, it isnt quite the house it used to be.

Basically. I touched on this a page ago or so, but the long and short is that Goyf was good because it was a cheap, resilient threat that doesn't die to Bolt. But nobody is playing Bolt anymore, and Push/Path are literally everywhere. All of the advantage Goyf had is basically gone. It is being pushed out by Push and supplanted by Shadow, Delve creatures, and Eldrazi, each of which offer much more at a similar casting pace.

I've never played green or own any green cards, so I'm not personally invested in anything Goyf-related, but it is kind of sad to see yet another format pillar continue its fall from glory.
This is absolutely it, I'm surprised Goyf is still as expensive as it is. My guess is price memory not to mention that the big boy stores were propping up its price with high buy list prices. I think the bubble is about to burst.

So, I've been thinking about a new build, that trades a small amount of explosiveness for consistency, and should fare better against aggro metas.

    Creatures (14)
    4 Goblin Guide
    4 Monestary Swiftspear
4 Eidolon of the Great Revel
    2 Grim Lavamancer

    Spells (27)
    4 Lightning Bolt
    4 Lava Spike
    4 Rift Bolt
    4 Boros Charm
    3 Lightning Helix
    4 Searing Blood
    4 Skullcrack

    Lands (19)
    4 Inspiring Vantage
    4 Sacred Foundry
    3 Bloodstained Mire
    3 Wooded Foothills
    1 Clifftop Retreat
    4 Mountain

    Sideboard (15)
    3 Kor Firewalker
    3 Path to Exile
    3 Wear//Tear
    2 Shattering Spree
    2 Deflecting Palm
    2 Searing Blaze

The mana base runs 9 duals that are capable of entering untapped - and only 6 fetches. This should mean that, more often than not, you can play a Sacred Foundry or Inspiring Vantage within the first 2 turns, taking 0-2 life, rather the fetching and taking 3. After getting your white source, you'll only be fetching for mountains, because unless you brought in Firewalker - you have nothing that requires more than one white source. This means you should never take more than 4 or so life from the mana base, as opposed to the 6 life by turn 2 of Naya burn. Searing Blood was brought main, with Blaze moves to the sideboard, as in a build designed to minimize use of fetches, Blood would be more consistent. The sideboard is not made to handle any particular deck with a trump card, such as bringing in graveyard hate against dredge, but is rather made to be a toolbox. It has the ability to handle Kor Firewalker, Chalice on 1 and 2, and Leyline of Sanctity, so we can deal with all the cards that shut burn down. Additionally, all the cards in the sideboard can serve a purpose against multiple archetypes. Though it won't shift a match as easily as sideboarding against a particular deck, it should have a decent sideboard to bring in against most decks, to shift the win percentages of more games, and I would hope, could perform well in an unknown or diverse meta.

Does this seem like a viable deck?
In a heavy aggro meta Ensnaring Bridge can be really good so can Anger of the Gods.

Have noticed that the goyf stocks at SCG have been slow to sell. And a goyf is only 67 dollars now for SP of the 2017. Perhaps the slow sales are making the price drop??

Hopefully, it will go down even lower next month. Smile
At the current printing rate I think 50 dollar Goyfs are coming are way. Tarmogoyf isn't as specially as it used to be, Cheap vanilla beaters are more common now. I need to pick up 3 more myself but I'm going to wait to pick them up.

I don't, I take the money that I would have spent and pick up the singles I need. I do see the value of prelease though, some people seem to really enjoy it. You can't always put a monetary value on fun.

  • posted a message on How much luck is involved in Magic?
Skill and luck are two different things. I think we are getting off topic with all of the skill talk. Luck is , 2 people step out side one gets hit by a meteor and dies. The one who got hit by the meteor was unlucky had nothing to do with skill (before someone says skill might have been involved, they didn't have time to make a saving throw)Lol. It had nothing to do with skill. The real question, Is Luck just random chance or something more supernatural? You could argue that skill is a variable of luck.

I have seen lucky people, it seems like everything comes up roses for them. I have also seen unlucky people were it seems like fate is looking for ways to screw them over. My personal believe is there is some random chance but there are also karma and supernatural factors involved. I know it's impossible to prove karma and supernatural factors, since it is something unseen and unmeasurable in are physical realm.

Issues I have with today's magic. Please note that this is just my personal taste and opinion and it's partly because I got into mtg at certain time so of course I prefer the older ways because who likes changes huh...:)

Note 2 - Despite all the issues, I am still involved in MTG heavily, I just simply switched from tournament to casual and guess what's the best solution if you like old cards more than new?.....yes, I have binders and decks full of the old stuff.

    1. Too much of new content.

When I got into the game back in 2007, there were three new sets printed in one year + core set in every second year I think...you could buy boosters, fat pack or one of the PCD. There were some promo cards of course and so on. I felt there is enough time between each set to get to know all the cards, obtain them, play with them and so on. Then around Lorwyn they added first Duel Deck, then after some time first FTV I think, then came another DD, another FTV, then Premium sliver deck, planechase, archenemy, commander, modern masters, conspiracy etc etc etc....now I feel it's so much that makes me loose interest.

    2. Functional reprints

I know they make sense in terms of flavor/story, but it bugs me that you can play 12 Llanowar Elves in one deck or 3 in one commander deck. And some feel un-necessary, at least in my eyes. Why print another Coastal tower ...

    3. Art and frame

Art feels a bit generic, computer made (there are exceptions). The latest frame is also something I don't like, especially the thick black bottom line of the front side. I have no problem with all the older styles, even future shifted and so on.

    4. Masterpiece series

This I actually think it's a good idea, but I would prefer if they made the series smaller, 54 cards is too much imo, this way they will quickly run out of cards to print as masterpieces. Second thing is the design or frame or how to name it...there already exists several different frames, then you have black border/white border, different foil process (FTV) and so on and if you build a deck using all these different card designs, it starts to look odd.

I agree that they are over saturating the market. It seems like every other week there is some new product on the market. I believe slow and steady would be better. It would give players more time to gather resource to buy more of each product. I'm at the point of not buy anything but a few singles, I feel overwhelmed with so much product coming at me.

I don't like the Masterpiece series as it has been implemented, there are to many in each set. I would rather they only do one lottery card per set.

Redcap is a tuff dude to deal with. I guess Leyline of Sanctity and Grafdigger's Cage is my best chance of beating the combo.
They are better ways. If you respond to the redcap's persist trigger by removing it from the graveyard, it can't come back into play and kill you.
    Rest in peace works too.
