I am not a fan of these DFCs (or DFCs in general, honestly), so this is just a big fail for me all around.
They claim its the rules baggage of the supertype Legendary that makes things messy but I don't think that argument holds up. If there was a keyword Unique with no rules meaning and lands like this had it..that would be, literally, meaningless. I have no idea who would think that makes the situation better.

id really like to see more 2/4+keyword for cmc3 in green to make good use of the manaelf package and dont lose to red.
Mosscoat Goriak briefly gave me hope. But I don't think they're at the point of doing straight up Giant Spider for 3 yet at common. The only card that comes to mind is Twin-Silk Spider and that wasn't in a standard set.

why 1 power? meeeh
I wish they'd reprint Whip Vine in this slot sometime. But due to Party mechanic there are probably going to be a ton of commons that are just type-shifted reprints like this one. Sporecap Spider was an original Zen block card that could have returned as an Elf Rogue too.

Yes, although the single instaparty creature only counts as one creature for the "number of creatures in your party" part of his ability. So he'd be a 2/2 with it out. But the "full party" ability would trigger. Also I think he's at max a 5/3 flyer, or 4/2 that gives something else +1/+1 and flying, instead.
Is that right? I think "full party" requires you to have four creatures that have the four different types.

The allusions are rather obvious, especially when taken together. You're right, just about any individual trope could fit on any plane, but I don't think that's ever been advocated. And, frankly, I think you're looking at the guilds through the wrong lens; the Orzhov, for example, aren't just a bank - they're a Byzantine representation of the early church.
I think the danger of sophistry runs high here.
What's the value of such an accusation if you're not going to substantiate it with evidence?
Quote from Marl Karx »If they make a Roman set its going to center around EMPIRE in some way obviously.
Obviously. Care to remind me what that looks like?
I don't understand question 2. Considering the way wizards works, there would have to be a Caesar and the Legion(s). And architecture (probably w/ acqueducts), some allusion to roads (a la Appian Way). Unclear how they would handle slaves and revolts but certainly a Spartacus character and gladiators. Something with Hannibal and elephants because the real historical timeline of the Second Punic War is not going to deter them. Romulus and Remus clearly.
Just think of the major, overdone tropes -- presumably including some kind of pantheon. A fair few of the Olympians wouldn't even necessarily be rehashes of the Theros Gods. Doubtful on someone like Aeneas but I would expect them to work in some kind of Triumvirate. Don't know how they would insert other emperors like Nero but assuming they're time-hopping there's probably barbarians (Vandals and Visigoths) too

Its probably the best 4 mana haster, I guess? The competition's not real stiff and it benefits from being colorless when the rest almost exclusively require red. What is currently considered the top dog? Voldaren Duelist?
Jul 31, 2020Posted in: Pauper & Peasant DiscussionQuote from Cobble »Interesting downshifts.
Abrade - Seems alright. It's probably the most maindeckable piece of red artifact destruction. Still, is having the option to destroy an artifact really better than being able to deal 3 damage to a player?
Everflowing Chalice - My favourite manarock in other formats. I don't think this is any better than a signet here.
Conclave Naturalists - Been waiting for a Indrik Stomphowler downshift for a while. Not particularly exciting, but when you gonna destroy stuff it will get the job done well.
Bone Picker - Requires a little support, but it is cost efficient and the hard cast isn't unreasonable either. Generally something dying is one of the easiest conditions to meet.
Cast Down - By far the best common of the set. It's the stapliest staple since legendary creatures aren't a thing at common.
Heartless Pillage - It's a Mind Rot variant. Nothing remarkable.
Honourable mention: Oubliette - While not technically a downshift it was printed as a common in Arabian Nights so not many people really know about it's existence nor own one for that matter. While more or less being worse than Murder, it can deal with equipments which is something Black can't typically do. Also, worth mentioning that the phasing out wording means Oubliette circumvents command zone nonsense for the people who play that format.
I guess I understand why they changed Oubliette but it seems weird to me to randomly make the card into an instant Commander staple.

What's the groups thoughts on Bone Picker? Morbid can be tricky to enable right away, but even at base, a 3 power flying deathtouch for 4cmc isnt horrible...
Yeah, there a number of interesting ones but nothing over the top really among the new reveals. I would imagine Bone Picker is pretty good and maybe it makes sense to steer black in a more Morbid direction anyway.
Jul 30, 2020So a bunch more downshifts:Posted in: Pauper & Peasant Discussion
