Because I have a BA in history, by way of Roman studies, and sometimes teach world history to 7th graders? The allusions are rather obvious, especially when taken together. You're right, just about any individual trope could fit on any plane, but I don't think that's ever been advocated. And, frankly, I think you're looking at the guilds through the wrong lens; the Orzhov, for example, aren't just a bank - they're a Byzantine representation of the early church.

I think the danger of sophistry runs high here. If they make a Roman set its going to center around EMPIRE in some way obviously.

posted a message on Set (P)review - My top 20 Magic 2021 (M21) cards for the cube!
I wish the phasing ability could hit your own creatures for blink functionality.

Part of why it doesn't hit friendly creatures might be that it would be misleading by seeming to imply that phasing counts as "blinking". You could save a creature about to die with phasing but not re-trigger etbs or abilities conditioned on etb. Still, that can actually be a pretty effective ability (many years ago Blinking Spirit was considered a very good card)

Other than that point I agree with your assessments. Its easy to fixate on cheap removal and forget exactly how oppressive creatures like the Elder Gargaroth (or Baneslayer) can be if they stick for even a short period of time -- not to mention that a goodly number of decks can barely kill it.

Does anyone here have a desire to outright buy a foil cube plus like 200+ extra foil commons that are applicable?

I am leaving MtG and all WotC products permanently, and deleting my account here as I cannot comply with those who would disrespect their customers as they have. PM me if you want to Tender a serious offer for an all foil cube including landeskog and a few proxy foils for non-foilable cards.

It has been fun, and I will miss the interactions.

Sad to see you go. Like most hobbies or even most things in general, you kinda have to compartmentalize the parts you enjoy from the corruption, greed, graft (and often FAR worse -- bet your ass Hasbro is as murderous as they come when it suits them both at home and abroad) of the people, organizations, structures and overall system behind those things.

Indignation isn't the answer anyway -- at bottom the same slimy vultures have their hand in virtually every pot and you still gotta eat and otherwise provide for yourself despite all objections. Letting it wear on you on an individual level is mainly tilting at windmills and its primary purpose is "doing something" in times when it seems hopeless that anything can legitimately be done.

As a guy who's spent years pounding the streets I can tell you that these are interesting times and definitely not the moment to be overcome by depression or cynicism.

As i said ppl have no perspective. Ive seen ppl refer to themselves as whales when they spend 3k a month. Make that 30k and we can talk.

Long story short. Magic is still too cheap

If you're saying a NET outlay of $30,000 per month, I think there are zero people doing that. Anyone putting up that much on Magic is trying to turn a buck.

No matter how powerful companions are, and I think the mechanic was a mistake, I think flat out changing the mechanic drastically from how it's worded on the card is not the answer and sets a dangerous precedent that they can just print anything and it it's too powerful errata it later. This is especially true when a lot of people haven't even played with the cards yet, if you don't play online you probably haven't played with a companion once yet.

I feel like there are way too many casual players around the world on kitchen tables for you to just say a few weeks after a set release, you know that flagship mechanic we just printed, well it no longer works the way it says on the card it works like this. It will cause major headaches at LGS level (albeit they aren't really open right now) and just isn't intuitive to making the game accessible.

One of the other things is also I feel that a lot of the theoretical fixes to the mechanic just make most of them completely unplayable in most cases. Which of the companions would actually see play if the companion mechanic wasn't on the card. Many of them are 5 mana plays which rarely make major waves in competitive. Lurrus would probably be good enough in older formats where you could play something immediately for value, but it's already banned there. At that point it's not worth the hassle if your errata just means they don't see any play anymore.

As crazy an idea as I think companions were, I think it would be even more crazy to errata the mechanic 2 weeks after the set released in paper.

Gotta agree with this. Insane case of sending mixed messages and also a very alarming precedent for anything they have planned for the future. Especially since the official comapny line is that Companions are polarizing as opposed to universally loathed.

This is something the mechanic already went through when it was originally tested 20 years ago when Maro first found out that this ***** is busted and not good for the game, as he detailed in an article he posted five years ago. Then he said "fug it" and did it anyways for Ikoria. And look what happened...

Out of curiosity, do you have a link to that article?

Gotta agree that the cycle 1 cards might technically have a niche but they are still mostly Bad. Specifically Go for Blood and Frostveil Ambush.

If it dies post mutate then you have to treat it as Rampant Growth for G2 (with an associated 1-for-1 of your host for their removal). And if you put it on anything but a "birb" it is mondo sucky.

What do you guys expect of a 3drop lol. Its like the best one we got by now. And with 6 ManaElves in green, it shouldnt be too hard to pull off.

Dunno about that, I think I'd rather just play Wood Elves or something similar for 3 mana, I'd rather have a second body and a land than a ~Giant Strength and a land. Mutate goes up in value a lot if you have 0/0 creatures that enter with +1/+1 counters on them, though.

A +2/+3 aura that rampant growths is better than Wood Elves IMO. Especially since it avoids the "removal in response" trap of auras.

take the checklist from scryfall or gatherer and paste the appropriate column from any speadsheet app..10 seconds maybe?
