After the backlash of The WAR I’m actually stunned they proceeded with this one instead of continuing to Eldraine. I’m not sure if Eldraine has enough material since it’s our first visit to a new plane, but definitely Theros on a second visit especially considering the first was three sets. Really looking forward to Theros
To be honest I think there is a line between the novels and set itself. I actually really liked the war of the spark set and the story told in the cards but have no interest in the prose if that makes sense. War of the Spark and Throne of Eldraine have been my favorite sets since Tarkir. I really enjoyed the Wildered Quest though.
It's kind of weird because the set will be rotating out by then. I would snap buy an Eldraine art book and I hope planeshift returns for Eldraine and Theros.
I'm not 100% certain I understand team up. My assumption is you would want it to function kind of like Oathbreaker except an ally creature instead of a signature spell. However the wording on your ability is confusing. Can you have as many teap up cards as there are printed with the specific Walker? Or is it just letting you have a second commander that is the one named in team up? The "or another commander with team up" is really confusing.
I'm trying to keep it a little open-ended for deckbuilding purposes. A lot of flack I've heard from the partners in Battlebond is that they don't give you as much creative choice as the original partners did so this was a way of allowing you to have synergy with a specific commander while also allowing you to have freedom in choice basically getting the best of both times we got partner. The idea is you get two commanders. One of them could be the named card or another team up card. For example Tovolar can be teamed up with Arlin or Dread Crew. I don't know maybe there is a cleaner way of saying it or maybe it should be more in the realm of the battlebond partners.
Dread Crew doesn't fit flavor fully with Angrath; his stchik in war was he was using his chains to grab externals which is why he Amassed, he has nothing to do with necromancy which is what this card is implying.
So I think my problem is that I'm trying to help marry pirate tribal and the amass tribal. All of the amass payoffs are centered around zombie tokens and not necessarily around being an army. The idea in my head isn't really vorthosy, but it's not that he is raising them from the dead, but they are cursed kind of like in pirates of the caribean.
Cacophony, I love me a nightmare God. It feels wrong not being an enchantment. It would then not be a creature unless you had 7 creatures in exile which would be a nice way of showing Ashiok faking devotion.
Unfortunately, this was more of a logistics problem. With the type line Legendary Enchantment Creature - Nightmare God is a lot to fit in the space. So I had to choose wether to have it be an enchantment or a nightmare and I thought being a nightmare was more important.
So when war of the spark came out I thought all of the uncommon planeswalkers (with the exception of maybe Narset lol) would have been fun if they had partner and can be your commander. So I thought of a partner like mechanic that I thought could be fun.
Team Up
As long as CARDNAME is your commander you may also have (other specific creature or planeswalker) as your commander or another commander with team up.
Here is a couple of musings I have created with this mechanic.
Tovolar Mondronen 4RR
Legendary Creature - Werewolf
Whenever one or more +1/+1 counters are placed on a creature you control you may have it fight target creature an opponent controls. If that creature is a werewolf transform it.
Team Up: Arlin, Voice of the Pack
4/5
Dread Crew 3UB
Legendary Creature - Pirate Army
Dread Crew enters the battlefield with a number of +1/+1 counters on it equal to the amount of mana spent to cast it.
Whenever a player casts a spell, remove a +1/+1 counter from Dread Crew. If you do, create a 2/2 black Zombie Pirate creature token.
Team Up: Angrath, Captain of Chaos
0/0
Cacophony God of Cities 1BR
Legendary Creature - Nightmare God
Indestructible
Cacophony, God of Cities can’t attack or block unless there are seven or more creatures in exile.
Team Up: Ashiok, Dream Render
5/5
I'll probably go through all of the uncommon walkers and possibly the Nephalim, but wanted to see what people thought.
Oko is genuinely unfun in commander. Even gets around indestructible. Any good card will have 3 opponents against it. Prophet of Kruphix for example; so it’s not a valid reason. Oko isn’t even tolerable in commander of all formats. It’s just very poor design that I find highly astounding slipped passed play testing, regardless of what excuses they’ve made for it. Just ban it across the board. Even as someone who loves Simic and shirtless men I can’t stand the design of that card to even use it myself. It just feels cheap.
I feel like Ballista is more likely to get the ban than Heliod. It’s a matter of time. No way that combo is surviving. Heliod will just have to stand out for his intended design, not a combo like that. He’s a well designed white card.
Yeah but commander has other options that can totally pacify a commander. I would argue that Darksteel Mutation, Imprisoned in the Moon, and Song of the Dryads are all a lot worse than Oko for the fact that the transformations dodges most creature based board wipes. If your commander gets elked you could always set up a political move to have an opponent swing into Oko or have one of their creatures block your elk so you can get it into the command zone. His -5 is a problem, but again then you would have to ban a plethora of cards that could take control of your commander. Prophet of Kruphix is another matter all together. Prophet untaps your entire team all of your lands and gives all of your creatures flash and unlike Oko can't be attacked directly. You could end up playing around 3 or more extra spells before you end up back on your turn. Oko is emmensly powerful in 1v1 enviroments but his power is just as fair as other cards in multiplayer. Leave my elk man alone lol.
I might be wishfully thinking (and maybe slightly evil) but white does have access to some cheap infect options and I think most of the time they are going to block 4 infect damage than block her. I think some kind of equipment + infect build may make her viable in commander. White has good weenie and artifact recursion to bring back any pieces that get shot down and the sword of truth and justice is pretty spicy as well.
Thats why this card would have been better with green, white and blue if ot can't protect itself
I think white does offer some options with protection and indestructible effects. Blue would offer unblockable effects though.

While I think it would be good to have an Eldrazi commander that can include the devoid Eldrazi, I think this set was made in mind that people were burntout by them last time. I think your Ally and landfall themed deck idea is more likely.
A part of me thinks that Izzet or a RUX escape deck may be viable. Beacon Bolt, Crackling Drake, and Ral, Izzet Viceroy can make use of the burnt out fuel in exile and I think jumpstart and surveil can help with getting cards in the yard to escape.
I know people don't like attacky Boros commanders but I think there is some interesting ways to buff him up. Bolster doesn't target and with only 1 toughness he usually will be the one you can bolster. There is also universal protection like Akroma's Blessing and Brave the elements that can fill in the gaps.

No world of no. I might be the only one on the planet to admit it but I love oko, Commander is the only place he has left.
I love Lea Solonga I do like the Christina Aguilara version but Lea's is better.

Atleast for putting creatures in the yard there was Corpse Connoisseurbut this card's reduction stat is going to make this a great card.
