I think theres a 2mana green satyr somewhere in theros block that either search the top 4 or 5 cards of the deck for a creature/land and dumps the rest into the graveyard. Maybe that's a consideration?
Played some games last night and you do have a point regarding Grapple with the past. If it was hit with RiP it became unusable.
I think Leyline still has merits against decks that try to win by direct damage most of the time.
I also noticed I'm a little less reliant on Vampire Nighthawk's Lifelink clause, and since Chromanticore already has the keyword on it I might just swap it out for phoenix. Granted if you're on the defensive play, lifelink/vigilance/first strike/double strike/deathtouch performs a similar role. I even find now that double strike matters a little lesser than sticking a hexproof/indestructible soulflayer on the board.
@yuseimax, truth to be told, I'm kind of on the edge about Pithing needle because as far as I noticed I really only board it in to use against planeswalkers most of the time, but now that I prefer a more aggro game plan I may swap it out for Anger of the gods/Abrupt Decays.
@BadMcFadden that mirror match sure was awkward haha, you even survived my 3 Thoughtseizes lol.
So here's the latest tweak, and I'll run it through some more games when I can this week. Only number i'm unsure of is the 3-2 split between chromanticore & samut.
Now the first thing you might notice is the odd number of spells and creatures. I'll give my reasoning:
Due to the inclusion of Traverse, there's now a high possibility to tutor for one-offs like Thrun/Confluence, in case I need a color fix or grind in the first round against control types. Thrun is now also in the mainboard to up our Hexproof creature count(originally was competing with Sigarda in the SB slot, but gradually made space by cutting 1 traverse)
There are situations whereby the Fanatical firebrand is warranted, due to its ability to ping/sac at no cost, since it is functionally the same as Bomat for this deck, I'm trying a 1-2 split for the time being.
I'm still up for grisly salvage/grappler 2-2 split, because there are times where you may end up with not enough black sources and you need to grab stuff back from graveyard.
2 Vampire Nighthawk - 3 Chromaticore split for lifelink & flying keywords, and I figure having 5 source of multi-type cards should be enough to enable delirium midgame.
Kind of torn over the choice of Mana confluence over Cavern of Souls, but I think Cavern might be the better one here.
3 basic lands: 2 swamps to cast nighthawk/soulflayer over bloodmoon, single green to cast the green stuffs.
As for the sideboard, not sure if I should have a 3rd damping sphere over the singleton Abrupt Decay/Maelstrom, but I guess that depends on what kind of matches you're expecting.
In the maybeboard/Keep in view tab, I'm still thinking of testing out Sigarda & Flamewake Phoenix, but they may be better suited against certain decks only.
Hopefully I can find time to jam some games and test them. But I like to ask for you guys to test my list on my behalf if you're willing and put your feedback here too.
I some what agree that at least for basic lands in a Souflayer deck, if you have multiple cards with BB in its cmc, you need at least 2 basic swamps, with the the other 2 being green and white if you have some white cards that you think you need to hardcast. Else double green or +1 mountain is fine as well if you intend to shore up the spreading seas matchup
Looks super consistent. Although having only 18 lands feels kind of scary haha
Dinoflayers
Seems like it could be an alternative viable to the Soulflayer Build since we have a form of reanimation in Goryo's Vengeance
Check out the Soulflayer Deck from Giant Monster Games Gaming too: Soulflayer Combo
There's a really spicy tech in the form of 1x Danitha Capashen, Paragon in the sideboard. Has anyone thought of having her as part of the 75?

Although I still prefer the Vampire Nighthawk over the Reaver any day lol

As far as I can see, this deck might fold to itself due to the inconsistency and lack of explosive turns
Yaw, a Soulflayer list made the top 8 of a modern event.
Which of you is Hal Brady haha
