Is there a sideboarding guide for burn players somewhere on the internet ?

    Thanks.

Go to the first post in this topic and you will see a sideboard guide. Taking out the Eidolon against Humans and Hollow One is perfectly fine.

I have a question on gameplay. I was playing against Merfolk, I won game 1 and on game 2 it goes:

Turn 1: Island, Vial; Vantage Goblin Guide
Turn 2: Island Chalice on 1; Fetchland

I have 2 Revelry in hand and a couple of 1 drops. You always take down the chalice first, right? (that is what I did btw)

    Thanks

Depends on the rest of my hand. If chalice is shutting down most of my cards, I'm blowing up chalice first. hell depending on how the game develops I may even just hold the drev an extra turn or two in case they play a second chalice. If I have more two mana stuff like an eidolon and a couple of searing blazes I'd lean towards vial. Blowing up vial on one when they probably boarded out 1-drop spells in favor of chalice sets them back tremendously, you get in more goblin guide damage before they put blockers out, and your higher-cost spells can finish the job. The only fear is them either countering my drev attempt next turn or playing a second chalice on 1.

I can't argue against your play, but I'd be careful about creating "always" situations.

The reason why I decided not to wait for the DRev play is that I have 2 and I am afraid of spreading seas getting rid of my only green source (or of having to use a DRev on Spreading seas after floating the green mana).

You are right about the "always" comment. I should not have used that since there are small details that make all the difference. Thanks for the comments. It is always interesting to me when I hear people say that deck is a super linear deck to play. They clearly do not see that in order to maximize your chances there are many small decisions that matter a whole LOT.

I can't think of any situation where I would leave Chalice in play when I'm able to remove it.

What else would you do here? The only fear in that situation is that your opponent can vial in a cursecatcher, but you can try again next turn anyway. The best line is to probably attack with Guide to see if they tap vial for a blocker and blow up Chalice in response to them tapping vial. If they don't, just blow it up before your eot. You might think about waiting until their eot to do it, but I wouldn't do that because then they have blue mana open (though dispel and spell snare are turned off by chalice, so maybe it's safe to wait until their eot so that Chalice affects them as well).

Interesting point about chalice and their countermagic. The line I took at the time is exactly your first suggestion, I attacked with Guide and blew up the Chalice at my EOT for fear of counters when they untapped.

Just to let you know how the game progressed, they played another Chalice on 1 on their turn so I blew that one up too and the Vial remained in play the whole game. I ended up winning easily.

    Hi Yorugua,
I like 13 of your 15 sideboard cards Smile

I'm not sure about the ensnaring bridge. It feels like bridge plays the same role as Deflecting palm, and we will bring bridge and palm in pretty much the same matchups, wich might be too many cards.
I would cut the bridge for 2 other cards. In my sideboard (listed a couple of post before) I replaced the bridge for 2 kor firewalker as I expect to play against other burn decks.
You could also replace the bridge for 2 Firecraft exquisite if you expect to play against a lot of UW/x control

Thanks for the reply, and I guess I should have read your post before asking a very similar question, since the main deck is almost the same as yours. I am running 4 skullcracks and 19 lands instead. I think your comment makes sense, I will probably just go with 2 firewalkers and remove the bridges. The main reason for me to include them was Hollow One, but I would hate to have to play the mirror without firewalker.

Hi all, I was looking at the meta and popularity of different decks and performed and analysis of which sideboard choice cover most of the decks that are popular right now. I am playing a pretty stock Boros list splashing for Destructive Revelry. Based on my analysis, I ended up with the following sideboard:

    3 Path to Exile
    2 Rest in Peace
    2 Deflecting Palm
    2 Searing Blood
    4 Destructive Revelry
    2 Ensnaring Bridge

If you have comments about these choices I would appreciate them. Thanks!

Does anyone have plans to try Grunn, the Lonely King ? Looks like it may be a good replacement for some of the high end in the creatures build

Curious to see if anyone can solve this mystery. I was playing a match on MTGO and faced goblins. Lost game 1 and boarded in Kor Firewalker who single-handedly won games 2 and 3. My opponent writes as he concedes "I have 5 ways to deal with Kor Firewalker". Any ideas of what he is talking about? The lists I have seen have really no way to do this. Thanks.

Pyrite Spellbomb or Reality Hemorrhage seem the most likely for Goblins. I guess they could side in something like Skullcrack, Everlasting Torment, Combust or Demonfire too but that seems less likely.

    Thanks for the info!

Hello everyone, I am a player that decided to get into modern and have been reading this thread for a few weeks as well as reading some of the articles recommended here and watching youtube streamers (shout out to MrMagicdownunder). I have played some online to get used to playing Burn and also to get a better sense of some of the decks I am likely to face.

Yesterday I went to my LGS for the SCG Modern Night to see if I could hold my own. I ran a pretty basic list:

I ended up going 3-1 which was barely enough to make top 4 and split the prizes.

Rd 1 (2-1 vs. Dredge): Lost game 1 after they got a pretty fast start. Boarded into Rest in Peace and Deflecting Palm. Game 2 he was a little slower but then got a huge turn and was able to create a board with 10 power (I was at 15). On his end turn I put him to 5, drew and say go. He attacked for 10 and then proceeded to cast Conflagrate for 8 and lost to my response with Deflecting Palm. Game 3 he had a slow hand and I burned him.

Rd 2 (1-2 vs. Hollow One): After the top 8 last weekend at Pro Tour Rivals it did not surprise me to see this deck there. He got a Hollow One turn 1 and a Gurmag Angler turn 2, so we were done quickly. My SB plan was the same as what I did against Dredge. Game 2 was pretty quick the other way around, he played Burning Inquiry without great luck and ended losing fast. Game 3 was a nail biter, we were both pretty low on life, I had Deflecting Palm in hand with open mana with him having a Gurmag Angler on board. Sadly, he also had Collective Brutality which ended my hopes.

Rd 3 (2-1 vs. Jeskai Control): I was scared of this matchup, but I was lucky game 1 with my hand and burned him before he could do anything. Game 2 he won pretty handily. Game 3 was a longer closer game, in which having read Patrick Sullivan's Burn vs. Counters was valuable enough to get me to play with patience and wait for the right spot to go for it.

Rd 4 (2-1 vs. Counters Company): Game 1 was insane, since he mulliganed to 4 and still beat me when he drew perfectly and I flooded out! I boarded in my graveyard hate and paths for Boros Charm. Game 2 I drew a hand with 15 burn and after he fetched a couple of times he was pretty much dead since I had Skullcrack for his Kitchen Finks. Game 3 I got him to 3 health and ran out of juice with a Goblin Guide and Monastery Swiftspear on board. He fetched and played Finks to get to 4 and says to me..."hope it is not Boros Charm", which of course could not be since I sided them out. I dealt 3 with another burn spell and put him to 1 with the board locked. After another turn whiffing he decides he has had enough and attacks with all but 1 creature, which really puzzles me. I take the damage, untap, draw a land, declare attackers and he blocks my Guide and the Swiftspear goes through. I looked at him puzzled until I realized he thought he was at 4 health! I pointed out he was dead and when he looks at his pad I notice he had ran out of room in the column and had written the 1 higher than where the 4 was. That was a crazy finish.

At the time I felt bad for him but did not see how to have proceeded any other way. Then I thought maybe offer to go back to the previous turn attacks and allow him to attack with one less creature...but I am not sure what was the best course of action. What would you guys have done? Was I wrong in just taking that win?

Anyway, if you got all the way here, sorry for the long post and thank you all for the wealth of information in this thread. In the future I will try to keep my reports way shorter than this Smile If you have any feedback on the SB choices / plays feel free to offer it. I am eager to learn to play Burn better.

Looks like it is Duel rules (French Commander) so players start with 20 health. From what I've read aggro is pretty good and I have most of the cards for playing Zurgo Bellstriker burn so I will try that Smile

Thanks for the feedback. I will see if I have cards to use a different commander, since I don't have any 1v1 decks built. If I don't, then I'll just run Mazirek and hope for the best.

If I face Sigarda I will have to scoop, lol.

I have a question that is a little off topic, so feel free to tell me to delete it Smile

This weekend I am playing a 1v1 tournament and I am going to see if this deck works in that setting (I play the creatures version). I have 2 quick questions:

    1) Sol Ring, Mana Vault and Strip Mine are banned (other cards like Gaea's Cradle and Mana Crypt are too, but I don't have them in my deck due to budget). Any recommendations as to what to replace them with? I was thinking Mind Stone, Fellwar Stone and Golgari Signet just FYI Dark Ritual and Misty Rainforest are already included in my deck)

    2) Are there any other cards that you would replace being a 1v1 game instead of multiplayer?

    Thanks!

Hi DK, today I won a game going infinite with a combo that though easy to spot I did not see described in your synergy & combos section and wanted to point it out in case you want to add a comment about that. I had Mazirek and one other creature in play (both with a counter) as well as Animation Module. Therefore all I needed was to play a fetchland at the start of my turn, sac it, pay for 2 servos, sac 1, pay for 2 servos, etc. Sorry if I am being captain obvious Smile

    Cheers!

You’re right; it’s not mentioned in the primer. I don’t know if I mentioned it in the thread, though, being as I use it similarly. So it should definitely be included in the primer. Thanks for pointing it out! As to your setup, I imagine you’re using Ashnod’s Altar for the Colorless Mana Colorless Mana to pay for the servos (and thus sac them).

Yes, sorry. I forgot to include that Ashnod's Altar is in play, you are correct.
