    If I have a tree of redemption with slagwurm armor on it, does this generate net life?

    Say a 0/13 tree (0/19 with armor) and 20 life. I switch, leaving me with 19 life and a 0/26 tree, switch back for 26 life and a 0/25 tree. And so on.

    The rules.

    1: Have Fun!!!
    2: Each round, except round 1 (signup round), will have a theme, and the contestants will design cards to match that theme.
    3. Players may submit a new, original card, or any card[s] they have created, so long as they are the players own original design and the card[s] meet the challenge requirements. Last word on meeting these requirements and any penalties is up to the hosts.
    4: Each round will have 4 days to submit cards and 3 days to to vote for the cards.
    5: Judging is only done by poll and the player with the lowest number of votes will be eliminated. Voting will be public and open to the general public. You may vote for as many, or as few cards as you like (including yourself if you want). The host(s) have final say on the validity of a vote in the case of questionable votes.
    6: Any player that doesn't submit a card for any reason will be eliminated.
    7: If a player submits a card or cards that does not meet the challenge requirements, that player may receive a DQ and be eliminated. If possible, the player in question will be notified to try and correct the problem before the end of the round. If the mistake is not corrected or is not caught until after the voting has begun, then the hosts will decide if a DQ will be assigned.
    8: If there's a tie for the lowest vote total, all those people get to stay in the game but they get a black mana next to their name. Anybody who already had a :symb:, however, is out. Players that get a black mana will keep it until he or she is eliminated or we reach the Top 7 bracket.
    Anybody with three or less votes in a single round will also receive a :symb:. Similar rules apply.
    9: The game will continue until we have a single champion... our Design Idol.
    10: If the winner of the last Design Idol returns to defend his or her title (he or she must now sign-up like everyone else), he or she will earn a white mana beside his or her name. This means if he or she would earn a black mana for a round, the white mana falls off instead. Or, if that player would face single elimination, the white mana will convert into a :symb:. If the white mana goes unused by the time we reach the Top 7 Bracket, it will fall off.
    11: The Top 4 of the last Design Idol get the right to "shotgun" a place on the new season. The same is true for hosts, only they get shotgun rights for two seasons. (So any hosts of Season VI can shotgun in VII and VIII). They still have to create a card for the first round, however.

    New Rule: Renders may be submitted, but text is required. The text of the card will be copied and pasted into the poll with any links.

    We've reached the showdown between Morguloth and Oculus.

    This round is a "What if" round. The challenge was to change a design or creative decision for a past block and design cards showcasing the difference. A sentences or two explaining the change is allowed and encouraged. What if alara were split into wedges? What if flip cards or two face cards had debuted in Shadowmoor? What if the Phyrexians had invaded Kamigawa?

    Your challenge is to make 7 cards showing the differences. These should include not only the change you made, but other cards effected by the change. The 7 cards must include all 4 rarities, all 5 colors, and all the major types (artifact, creature, enchantment, land, instant, sorcery, and planeswalker.) Not all cards must relate to the change, but all must be appropriate for the same block.

    Morguloth asked "What if the Zendikar allies, aided by a mystery planeswalker, managed to repel the Eldrazi? This would be shown by expanding the 'Ally' mechanic to the 'Rise of Eldrazi' set, bringing about the "Fall of Eldrazi"".

    Allied Stronghold
    Legendary Land {R}
    Whenever Allied Stronghold or an Ally enters the battlefield under your control, you may add 2 mana to your mana pool.

    Allied Blade 3 mana
    Artifact - Equipment {U}
    Equipped creature gets +1/+1 for each Ally creature you control.
    Equip 2 mana

    Allied Funeral Rites :1mana::symb::symw:
    Enchantment {R}
    Whenever an ally you control dies, you may pay :1mana:; if you do put a 1/1 white Soldier Ally creature token onto the battlefield.

    Allied Battle-Mage
    :2mana::symr:
    Creature - Human Wizard Ally{U}
    Whenever Allied Battle-Mage or another Ally enters the battlefield under your control, Allied Battle-Mage deals 1 damage to target creature or player.
    1/3

    Allied Research :3mana::symu:
    Sorcery {C}
    Tap any number of untapped Ally creatures you control, draw cards equal to the number of creatures tapped this way.

    Allied Ambush :1mana::symg::symg:
    Instant {C}
    Ally creatures you control get +2/+2 until the end of turn.

    Vynax the Emancipator
    :1mana::symg::symw::symu:
    Planeswalker - Vynax {M}
    <+1> Reveal the top card of your library. If it's a land card, put it onto the battlefield. Otherwise, put that card into your hand.
    <-2> Exile target creature with power greater than or equal to 4.
    <-6> Put a 1/1 white Soldier Ally creature token onto the battlefield for each land you control.
    [3]

    Occulus proposed "Short and simple - Mirrans lost the war because they tried to overwhelm the Phyrexians with force. Contraptions explore an alterate Mirrodin Besieged, where the Mirran forces instead experimented with countless new devices, leading to a chaotic warfare the Phyrexians were incapable of adapting to (see Spiraling Duelist's flavor text).
    While Steamflogger Boss implies an inherently parasitic relationship between Riggers and Contraptions, this can be minimized by making only one dependent, and taking the other out of the deck (either sideboarding or tokens) to minimize the loss of deck space."

    Ghalma's Workshop
    Artifact Land - Contraption {R}
    (Ghalma's Workshop isn't a spell.)

    : Add 1 mana to your mana pool.
    : Artifact spells you cast this turn cost 1 mana less to cast.

    Piston Myr 2 mana
    Artifact Creature - Myr Contraption {C}
    When Piston Myr enters the battlefield, untap up to two target artifacts.
    These repurposed myr scuttle around Mirran encampments, maintaining various golems and devices.
    1/1

    Scrap Lasher :1mana::symr:
    Creature - Goblin Rigger {U}
    :symr:, , Sacrifice an artifact: Assemble a Contraption. (To assemble a Contraption, choose a Contraption card you own outside the game. You may play it this turn.)
    Goblins believe it perverse to use any scrap metal that wasn't functional before it got to them.
    2/1

    Razor Salvage :1mana::symw:
    Tribal Sorcery - Rigger {C}
    Choose one - Return target artifact card from your graveyard to your hand; or exile target artifact card from your graveyard, then assemble a Contraption. (To assemble a Contraption, choose a Contraption card you own outside the game. You may play it this turn.)
    Generations of Auriok tradition told them to restore the golem. Neccessity told them to drag it to the ironworks.

    Makeshift Assembly :2mana::symu:
    Tribal Enchantment - Rigger {R}
    Artifacts you control and artifact cards you own that aren't on the battlefield are Contraptions in addition to their other types.
    "A week with a seastrider shell and a quiet space is all I need to rebuild a leveler."
    - Velus, Synod artificer

    Toxic Claim :1mana::symg:
    Instant {U}
    Destroy target artifact. If black mana was spent to cast Toxic Claim, proliferate. (You choose any number of permanents and/or players with counters on them, then give each another counter of a kind already there.)
    With the remaining Phyrexian forces pushed into the Mephidross, cooperation between its factions was no longer a matter of politics.

    Grivor Stra, Putremancer :2mana::symb::symg:
    Planeswalker - Grivor {M}
    {+1}: Each player may return a card from his or her graveyard to his or her hand.
    {0}: Exile up to three target cards from a single graveyard.
    {-7}: Creatures you control get +3/+3 until end of turn. Creatures you don't control get -3/-3 until end of turn.
    {4}

    Everyone please vote and critique in this final round as we determine once and for all our next design idol.

    These people can have both the resources and the means to uproot themselves, abandon their lives and live on a private, artificial island.

    Yup, government sure has harmed them.

    Here I was evaluating harm by what one group did to another. By this logic the Klan never harmed southern blacks, they still had the resources to move north. Are you putting this forward as a theory or just snarking?

    Coercive force is part of it, but also social tradition and legitimacy. The average person, in their everyday life, never experiences coercive force from the government.

    Threats count too. By that grounds being mugged at gunpoint isn't a violent crime if the victim hands over their wallet and shots aren't fired.

    I would condemn such a killing as immoral. I hope that if the temptation arose I would be able to say no. However, given the chance at the stakes proposed the answer would probably be yes. To claim that I would resist some temptation is easy before the temptation arises.

  • posted a message on Did we overreact to 9/11?
    I didn't. I thought that an appropriate action would have been to demand extradition of Bin Laden from Afganistan, and possible assassination of him if the opportunity arose. I thought the Afgan war had to high a cost in collateral damage and too much risk of blowback and that the Iraq war was not good. I thought that the domestic response was overblown as well. The US government and much of the populace did overreact though.

  • posted a message on Why has Western society moved away from religion?
    One major reason is that there are multiple religions coexisting side by side. When this happens the only options are oppression, conflict or secularism.

    If one religion sets the terms for the interactions, everyone who rejects that religion gets the shaft.

    If two or more contradictory religions both attempt to set terms simultaneously, there is a struggle.

    Because neither of these are good, people create a secular order.
