    I feel the same way.

I'm sure there's more to it, but I think one of the main reasons why Magic has more people "like that" is the fact that Magic has money prizes even at the lowest competitive level like FNM.
I played Warhammer 40k since '94 and went to some big tournaments here in Denmark over the years, but the prizes at Warhammer tournaments are more or less just the honour of winning and maybe a free box of Warhammer or something. It's not huge $10k checks like a GP top spot and the Warhammer community almost had none of those "alpha nerds" as I call them.
The contrast between the Warhammer and Magic community is huge and I really think the money prizes is a big factor in that.

Those Alpha Nerds just constantly feel some need to elevate themselves, put other people down and let everybody know how great they were. Lots of very condescending types who will stop at nothing to tell you how ***** your play/idea/plan is. I think most of those people have pretty sad lives and will do evertyhing they can to dominate "their territory" at every level. Some I think are just bad people inside and outside of the game store. You can barely have a normal conversation with some because it always feels like some sort of battle of wits or something. Always on their toes looking for a "fight".
It gets very tiresome having to deal with people like that so much and it takes a lot of the enjoyment and fun out of the game for me.

"why don't you just avoid the people you don't like?" I do, but I for some reason always get paired against one dude I can't stand hehe.

Don't get me wrong, I've met some great people at fnm and I have a lot of fun playing with most of the guys at my local game store because we're all adults and can take losing. I mean of course it sucks getting your ass whooped 0-4 sometimes, but I just went 1-3 last night, but I had a ton of fun playing so I didn't care about losing. You win some, you lose some.

I guess I'm glad I have a group of friends I grew up with who all play cards again now and we meet pretty often to have fun. I'm even getting some of them into standard hehe. Would just be nice if the level of alpha nerds was lower at the stores.

I think that's one of the decks biggest strengths. Access and room for tons of great removal. It can shoot anything down.

I´m chiming in as a player who considered picking up a standard deck, but ultimately opted out because of the price and ubiquity of Karn. I strongly dislike feeling like I´m playing a budget/non-optimal list, and it seems like I have the choice of either doing that or dishing out an unreasonable amount on an insanely inflated card that´s bound to crash eventually. I know that buying singles that will go down in value is part of the format, but this is just too much. I actually started to scrape a white aggro deck together, I even have the playset of History, but now I´m going to feel like I´m playing a loser´s version of WB Vehicles, and there´s no way I´m buying into a $650 Standard deck. I could consider GB Constrictor, but I guess it´s just a matter of time before people figure out that Karn is good there too. So I´m giving it a pass and I´m selling the Standard relevant cards I have.

I´m convinced that Karn hurts the format. I can´t possibly be the only one who was tempted to get into Standard, then looked at the top decks and the prices and went "heeell no".

G/B Constrictor decks are very fun to play, but may be a bad time putting money into since most of the key components all rotate out soon Frown
It's my favourite deck, so I'll be sad to see it go.

Is this thread also for the Approach-less U/W control versions and the historic version?

The U/W decks look sick, but I'm not keen on using approach.

I'm sorry guys, I have betrayed the fungi overlords and jumped ship (at least for tonight)... I'm playing U/W Historic tonight at my Wednesday Night Magic...

I was going to play Izzet Wizards, but I got the last white cards in the mail... I have too many good cards and too little time to play Frown

Though, I'm actually leaning towards using my Saproling deck again because I had a lot of fun playing it, it felt really powerful and could grind against pretty much any deck.

    Also, rule question.
How do creatures survive Settle the wreckage when you use Heroic Intervention?? I thought Settle targeted the player and not the creatures.

You are correct. They don't survive

Exactly, which is why you need to play around or discard Settle the Wreckage - or try out a Selesnya Saprolings version with Shalai, Voice of Plenty who will actually protect you from that pesky sweeper.

There was a dude splashing white for one Shalai in his saproling deck at my local fnm this evening. I didn't see how he fared. I saw a lot of Shalai this night actually. It's just a stupid good card.
My best friend was against a Green/white deck where the dude had Lyra and Shalai on the board the same time. Pretty damn brutal!
I'd say, I'd add Anointed Procession somehow too if I splashed for white. It's probably pretty clunky though. I kinda feel like the deck is strong enough as is running G/B, but could be fun with the white splash.

Anyhbody have any guesses how people will shake the meta up to combat all the control decks now? probably going to see lots of Carnage Tyrants.

And what are your guys' take on mirror matches? What do you like to run?

I feel like Shalai is interesting, but isn't she just kind of win more? If you have that much mana, hopefully you've found Verdurous Gearhulk and swung for the win? She doesn't protect from board wipes which are generally the biggest weakness of the deck.

I might be wrong, but that's my gut feeling. Blue at least gives us Negate. Plus the black allows us Duress.

I can't speak for anyone else, but I couldn't care less about the second ability. I care about the Oprah Winfrey-style hexproof, which specifically protects from Settle the Wreckage. The flying body isn't bad either. I will say that I'm more interested in it for other decks though.

I literally lol'ed at the Oprah Hexproof Smile

Maybe you should be calling it WNM. XD

Nonsense aside, great run!! I'm definitely an advocate for Fungal Infection, almost specifically with Mono-red in mind. Torgaar is a beatstick I've tried and I definitely like him. I think he goes better in some builds than in others, and is not a great late game card where his secondary effect doesn't matter much. I like him better in the sideboard, since against certain matchups bringing yourself back up to 10 is really strong (looking at you Mono-red) and depleting the opponent to 10 is really good against grindy decks, especially if they have lifegain. With that said, he's never useless against any matchups so I would feel free to try him in the main.

Man, I just made a reply to this but accidentally clicked away from the page....

Fungal Infection is so good, but I'd say it's a sideboard card. Being on the draw against mono red and killing a turn 1 Bomat and then having a saproling on the board for one mana feels so good! (Also feels good having saved a fatal push for other targets)

Just want to say again, that Vicious Offering is amazing in this deck. It kills Lyra for two mana and 1 saproling!!!
My removal package was 4x Fatal Push, 2x Vicious Offering, 1x Cast Down and 2x Vraska's Contempt.
Could make a case for removing the Cast Down for another Vraska's Contempt and go 3x Fatal Push and 3x Vicious Offering.
Cast Down is really good too, but I think more Vraska's and more Vicious Offering may the right way to go.

I think this deck surprises a lot of people. I don't think they expect you to come packing with so much removal. They all just go "haha oh cool, Saprolings deck! that's fun" and then you shoot all their ***** down turn after turn lol

has anyone tried this deck out against the new blue/white historic deck that's been going around (at least a few people consider it to be one of, if not the top deck, in the tier)?

I didn't even though there was a lot of U/W control decks. I have a feeling that this deck is actually pretty good against it if you can play around Settle The Wreckage and keep removal up for key targets like Lyra. Most of the threats attacking in will just be saprolings so they will probably feel bad using Seal Away on a token hehe.
This deck is good for grindy games because you can keep spawning creatures, and you have potential for life gain too with a couple of cards.

Also, I think having one or two Lost Legacy in the sideboard has become a must again with Approach decks making a bit of a comeback.

Yeah hehe, my local game store has standard on Wednesday and modern on Friday (which is actually kinda weird because Wizards apparently won't give out promos or something if it's not a Friday, so the modern players sometimes get standard promos.... and standard players get nothing most of the time, or it's just because I live in Denmark and we're too small of a country to get anything sent.... that happened with the Dominaria promo stuff Frown )

I guess it was one of the guys down there who went 4-0 with a mono black deck who said I may want to look into adding one of that card, because it seems like it would be good (he used it in his deck too). It doesn't directly synergize with the deck, but I mean... That guy usually brews some crazy stuff up that works so I'll take his word for it and slap one in the deck just to try it out.
The life gain or life drain could have been useful to me in some of the rounds last night too. But yeah, it doesn't really synergize that well other than hte sacrifice part.
I know this is a go wide with tons of small creatures that get big deck, but I always like just having one giant beast somewhere in the deck just for fun hehe.
The artwork looks really cool too hehe. Looks like a giant four armed samurai demon beast thing.

Oh yeah, forgot to say, Fungal Infection was a sick sideboard card against red too. Taking care of those bomats and stuff like that. This deck has access to some great removal and there's a lot of space to pack the deck with it. I'm really glad running all four of my Fatal Push again.

Went 1-3 last night at FNM. but two of the losses were 1-2 and were down to the wire, so no biggie.
Very close and fun matches. Won against mono red (which I was pretty proud of doing hehe) I only got annihilated by a weird flying unblockable artifact deck. This deck isn't really well suited to dealing with flying stuff even though I had 2 main board Aethersphere Harvester and a sideboarded Skysoveregin. I also sadly didn't pull any of the 8 or 9 removals in either round hehe, damn, would have been nice.
This deck was actually really good at grinding mono red out. You're hanging by a thread most of the time, but you sometiems out of nowhere have huge saprolings.

I had one Driven // Despair in the deck and was one turn away from making a giant attack, but then my Dryad got hit by In Bolas's Clutches and then I got Hadana's Climb'ed to death hehe.

I'd like to try and find space for maybe one or two Song of Freyalise. It seems really good. Especially if you can get an early kick on a Saproling Migration

Also, I can't stress enough how good Vicious offering is in this deck. I seriously killed Hazoret four times with it between the matches all for the price of two mana and one saproling. So good!!!

I'm thinking about putting one Torgaar, Famine Incarnate in the deck. It'll be pretty easy to play it for maybe four mana (sometimes 2) with so many saprolings ready to be sacrificed, and it seems like it would be a good way to do a reversal on really fast decks, because you can target yourself and get more life and then have a 7/6 on the field.

Really fun deck to play and had some really edge of the seat matches.

I'm running Saprolings at my next fnm tomorrow. Tried it with some of my friends last night and it was really fun to play.

Vicious offering works so well in this deck!!!

I get what you're saying, I just think it's a lame thing to do. I don't say anything at all that I know could potentially make my opponent sway his decision one way or the other. I don't talk about any of that when I play in a competitive setting.
I do think there's a difference between verbal bluffing and "letting the cards do the talking" and I think the former is bad sportsmanship.

This guy just gets on my nerves and I make bad plays when I play against him because I lose focus. He's just somebody I don't want to be around because I don't like him as a person, so it sucks I keep getting ******* seated against him. Like I said, I don't mind losing to other people, I just don't like this dude. I just don't want to be a baby and concede so I don't have to play with him, but he sure as ***** doesn't make me enjoy myself when playing cards is an escape for a few hours from an otherwise lame life.

I haven't played down there in a while 'cause I've been traveling, so I forgot about his bluffing style. And I haven't honestly played against people who used Settle the Wreckage that much, so I always forget that card exists which is my own damn fault.
I just gotta' not be a bitch and remember his bluffing style, or just hopefully never play that dildo again and actually have fun with the other players.

Man I sound like such a huge whiner... I'm just really ******* tired of that dude.

I think this deck just needs lots of enchantment hate to get rid of some Seal Away, still run plenty of Vraska's Contempt to take care of Teferi, Hero of Dominaria and then be careful about overextending Bristling Hydra into Settle The Wreckage.

A pretty cool snake deck came in first place at the standard event at SCG Atlanta. I'm pretty hype that he's using Phyrexian Scriptures and Tetzimoc, Primal Death in the sideboard. Awesome cards.
Very cool deck, just too bad I don't own three Karn hehe.
Very interesting to see he didn't play Llanowar Elves even though he's not using any energy cards whatsoever. I would have figured it'd be an auto include without the energy cards. But then again, he's running 8 merfolk for card filtering.
    https://www.mtggoldfish.com/deck/1068081#paper

2nd, 3rd and 4th was U/W Control. Gotta' beat control in this meta (Goblin Chainwhirler is really nasty too)

This may be a sidenote, but how do you all think about verbal bluffing at something like fnm? Some guy I played made a verbal bluff and I took the bait and got two hydras settled. I know I'm not the smartest guy in the world, but I forgot that dude tries to bluff when he's behind in a game, but he won because of it.
I don't mind losing, I just don't like that guy as a person. Too bad he's always at my ******* fnm.... I think it's pretty bad sportsmanship.

So fellas, ladies (wish women had a version of the word "dudes")... my inner Timmy has me testing Muldrotha, the Gravetide. Someone tell me why I'm crazy. It just feels like a house as a 1-of main deck if you get there, but maybe it's just the Scarab God 2.0. I don't know.

Seems like it could do some fun stuff. I pulled one in the display I bought and have been itching to try it out in the deck.

Could do some pretty fun stuff like having a flipped Hadana's climb, then have another one in play flip, and then play the one in the graveyard to have it out putting counters on everything again.

Muldrotha doesn't have any counter synergy, but I'm thinking it could be fun to use anyway. Maybe pull some Hydra's back from the graveyard after getting hit by a settle the wreckage. It's also big enough to fly in and do 12 damage with a flipped Hadana's climb.

I say go for it! Smile

By the way, just saw a Sultai deck on the SCG Atlanta open beat a U/W Historic control deck (U/W control being one of the new decks to beat) He wasn't using Llanowar elves. Still on Servant for those extra energy counters.
He was using Hinterland Harbour too. That was the only Dominaria card I spotted in his deck.

Deck still looks brutal in the new meta.
