MTG Salvation

So the other day my friend and I were playing a match. I attacked with a 4/4, he chooses to block with a 2/2 and a 3/2. I ordered 1. 3/2 and 2. 2/2. He then plays an instant to buff each +1/+1, saying that I assigned 2 damage to each creature so they both survive, but I was like 80% sure that its the order you put it in not choosing how to assign damage. So in reality, once the game state changes, the first 3 damage are assigned to the now 4/3, it dies, and the 3/3 survives, mine dies. Is this correct or is my friend correct?
