    “Mantle of Leadership”

    Theme

February will be Return month! Planar revisits have been some of Wizards' most popular sets in recent years. This month, you will be designing cards for a return to a plane that has yet to be revisited in a Magic set. Be wary of the design choices you make; the cards you design will influence your design limitations for future rounds this month.

    Round 3 Challenge:
Design a legendary creature card that represents either 1) a new card for an existing faction leader of your chosen block, or 2) a card representing a new faction leader of your chosen block. Your card's converted mana cost cannot be the same as that of your round 2 submission. If your round 2 card represented a faction, your chosen faction for this round must be different.

    • Examples of factions would include the following:
    • - For any block with significant tribal support (e.g. Rats, Moonfolk, Samurai, Snakes, etc. for Kamigawa; or Merfolk, Elves, Kithkin, Elementals, etc. for Lorwyn), any tribe with significant support would count as a faction.
      - Many sets have factions indicated by watermarked cards.
      - If you have any questions on what factions exist in your block, please ask in the CCL discussion thread and I will answer you as soon as possible.

    • Make sure to include a rarity.

PLEASE NOTE: This month will NO LONGER use the "mandatory top 3" rule. Critiques and top 3s will each be worth one bonus point per round but it will be possible to score points and advance even without submitting a top 3. This will also be done on a trial basis; future months may once again require top 3s from contestants.

Round 1 — Open to Everyone (Feb 1th-6th)
Round 2 — Open to Everyone (Feb 7th–12th)
Rounds 1 and 2 Critiques (Due Feb 15th)

Top 4 — Open to top 4 finishers from last round (Feb 23rd–25th)

I'm an idiot and don't know how to read rules.

    Grugg, Scab-Clan Chieftain 2GG
    Legendary Creature - Human Warrior {R}
    Riot
Other creatures you control have riot.
3R, T: Remove any number of +1/+1 counters from creatures you control. Scab-Clan Chieftain deals X damage to any target, where X is the number of +1/+1 counters removed this way.

Welcome to the Card Creation League! Everyone is free to participate in either or both of the first two rounds. Come join us!

    Theme

February will be Return month! Planar revisits have been some of Wizards' most popular sets in recent years. This month, you will be designing cards for a return to a plane that has yet to be revisited in a Magic set. Be wary of the design choices you make; the cards you design will influence your design limitations for future rounds this month.

    Round 2 Challenge:
Choose a card from any set from your chosen block. Note that card in your submission, then design a card that is a mechanical and/or flavorful callback to the chosen card. Your card cannot share a card type or rarity with your round 1 submission.

    • The list of card types is as follows:
    • - Artifact
      - Creature
      - Enchantment
      - Instant
      - Land
      - Planeswalker
      - Sorcery
      - Tribal

    • The card must be from a set from your chosen block. You cannot use a card that is merely from that setting (for instance, Mizzix of the Izmagnus would not be an acceptable base card.
    • Make sure to include a rarity.

PLEASE NOTE: This month will NO LONGER use the "mandatory top 3" rule. Critiques and top 3s will each be worth one bonus point per round but it will be possible to score points and advance even without submitting a top 3. Really would be nice to respond to questions prior to the round closing...

I'm sorry, I missed your question. New Phyrexia does not qualify because it is a subplane of Mirrodin.

Cardz5000 you will have a 24 hour extension from the time of this post to make your submission.

Be wary of the design choices you make; the cards you design will influence your design limitations for future rounds this month.

    Round 1 Challenge:
Choose a plane that has been the focus of exactly one block. This block cannot be Standard legal. This will be your chosen plane for the month. Design a card with either a returning mechanic appropriate for a "Return" set to that plane, or a card with a new mechanic designed for such a set. The card should synergize with the previous block's themes.

    • The following planes could be used to satisfy the challenge:
    • - Alara
      - Amonkhet
      - Kaladesh
      - Kamigawa
      - Lorwyn/Shadowmoor
      - Mercadia
      - Rabiah
      - Rath
      - Tarkir
      - Theros

    • Your mechanic can appear in the original block(s) your submission is based on, or it can be any mechanic from any set, so long as it fits your chosen plane's theme.
    • Make sure to include a rarity.

Stay tuned for January's CCL Final Poll. Anyone who votes will receive 2 bonus points for February's CCL!

Non-Spirit creatures you control gain afterlife 1 until end of turn. (Whenever one of those creatures dies this turn, create a 1/1 white and black Spirit creature token with flying.)
On Ravnica, just because you're dead doesn't mean you don't have a job to do.

I had an idea for a theme for February. If I can put this together soon, sure I'll host. Would be my first time doing so but I've played in enough of these to have an idea how to run one.

    I'm not for sure though.

Willows: This is a very cool concept that could have an entire mechanic based around it. I came up with a very similar mechanic for a collaborative custom set years back (I think it's the reverse of what you made) but this seems like a casual player's dream. Trostani players would love you.

Cards5000: I think Reproof should probably cost 1WU even though it's a split card (would not feel good playing this for four), but other than that it seems balanced enough. I wonder if you went back and forth on your cost like I did for my entry. Replace being able to be used both offensively and defensively is cool, to reuse an etb (twice!) or just kind of steal a guy.

Gateways7: I appreciate the creativity in rewarding delve use, but this seems like it could do a crazy amount of work for four mana. The only shred of balance I'm seeing is from the color-intensive mana cost, plus the card being the two colors that care least about creatures. Ironically, I think decreasing the CMC of this card to six would actually make it more balanced.

JamBlock: Enchantress players love you! This looks pretty obviously designed with singleton formats in mind, as it would get extremely messy if you copy this, since the two copies would produce more copies of each other. I do like exploring the design space of noncreature tokens, which is something that needs to be done more officially.

TheDrB: This is out of color pie. I think this kind of effect needs to be Simic or maybe even Temur. The concept is good, but I can't give you a top 3 spot because this is a pie break. Sorry.

picnic_bomber: Your flavor text made me laugh pretty hard. This design looks like a Duplicant that can copy the thing it clones. I think this is correctly costed, but it could use one or two extra points of toughness because it costs four colored mana.

Hemlock: Man this is quite the attack deterrent. Seems overly strong until you realize the creature actually has to hit you first in order to copy it. I especially like the 4 toughness.

    2) Willows
    3) picnic_bomber

    Choose one -
    • Copy target instant or sorcery spell. You may choose new targets for the copy.
    • Copy target activated or triggered ability. You may choose new targets for the copy. (Mana abilities can't be targeted.)
    • Create a token that's a copy of the card target permanent spell would become as it resolves.
