Finished 6:1 in a 85 Player tournament and made the 3rd place this sunday!
Loss was against Storm... Game one I had no disruption and game two I had to mull down to 5 and got stuck on two lands.
Deck felt super good and I went back to Militia Bugler as my flexslot.
Never thought Thalia, Guardian of Thraben will be that good in modern. Totally sold on the 4 copies!
I thought a lot about Tajic, Legion's Edge beeing better vs red removal decks but I think Bugler is much better in rebuilding your board after a sweeper and is better in other matchups then Tajic. My biggest concern was burn (wich was in fact the most played archetype) and Tajic feels like a 3-mana bolt in this matchup. He get's blocked by everything while Bugler can attack and blocks very well.
Another card I didn't like was Deputy of Detention. Dylan Hand seems to like this card pretty much but for now I'm not convinced. Our opponenten tends to board in more removal so the Deputy is going to die pretty likely.
I played some games against the new boogeyman UR Phoenix yesterday.
Match up is pretty tough but not as unwinnable as I thought. We've found that being on the play is huge for us as well for the Phoenix pilot. MVPs are definitely Reflector Mage and Meddling Mage. Preventing Bolt is huge and bouncing TiTi changes the boardstate significant.
Postboard Phoenix tend to be a little bit more controly. In those cases I really liked Mantis Rider and Tajic, Legion's Edge. Tajic even transfroms Anger of the God into a 3cmc spot removal.
One annoying thing... Blood Moon. Never played against it with 5c Humans. Do you think it's necessary to bring Knight of Autumn? I mean... without dork/vial we can't play her anyway. And those two won't stay on the battlefied for long.
I took Dylan's list but realised I only own 1x Tajic, Legion's Edge... so I throw in Thalia 2.0 for (FNM 30 ppl).
Finished 3-1
W Burn 2-0
W Restore Balance 2-1
W BG Rock 2-0
L Storm 1-2
The deck felt good so I ran it back on saturday (only 12 ppl):
Finished 2-2
W Dredge 2-1
L 0-2 Zoo
L Burn 1-2
W Oldschool Affinity 2-0
Thalia, Heretic Cathar: The taxing was nice even when she entered t3/t4. I think I will drop her in favor on the second Tajic... Tajic, Legion's Edge: Was really strong! Mantis Rider 5-6 and the protection is strong vs Dredge and Lightning Bolt decks. I'll go up to two copies. Really liked him. Damping Sphere: My meta is flooded with Amulet Titan so it's more of a meta call. It's also good vs storm and UR Phoenix so for me the 3rd copie is set in stone. Auriok Champion: Only had 2 copies on friday because the other two where in the mail... Due to the ok finish on friday I didn't change my list. Maybe I'll go up to three because of your feedback. Deputy of Detention: She is like another Reflector Mage and I think is good to lock out Dredge and other go wide decks. I think I will cut one copie from the sideboard in favor of the third copy of Auriok Champion.
All in all deck felt super solid and I had a blast to play it. Will do further testing against some tier 1 decks.
I'm by far no expert so it's just my humble opinon:
1. What about Thalia, Heretic Cathar Maybe could be fine in our SB against Phoenix. I'm gonna test it, but still think in good events I would play Rest in peace.
Turn 2 Thalia 2.0 is nuts! I played her in bant midrange decks when EldraziTron was tier1 and she was too good!
I often thought about her in the "two flexslots" we've got but sometimes she does nothing game one. The other question is what to cut from the sideboard? I think you want at least two copies... one copy is not enough. Maybe in favor of the RiP because she's easier to cast. Definitely a strong card to try out.
2. What do you think about Whirler Rogue? Never played this card. Is it good? When?
One of my favorite SB cards! At first I didn't like her but she is good in a lot of matchups. I board her in in the mirror and vs spirits to deal with opposing Phantasmal Image or to break boardstalls. Also she comes handy in grindy matchups leaving three bodies.
3. Sideboard Guide against God Tier/Tier 1 Decks?
It's a bit old but still a good overview to a lot of matchups - Ondrej Strasky made this up.
Sideboarded Deputy of Detention was amazing, @Viral_Drake suggested it last minute and I wish I played 2. Definitely would look to find room for another. Also definitely certain Damping Sphere should be a 3 of minimum. Best Tron hate for Humans IMO not close
Sure. This is my list. I knew that some people on the store would play cementery decks (Phoenix and Dredge), so I decided to test 2x Rest in peace (good results btw)
Solid list! The addition of RiP is spicey. I tried it but I used a fetch/shock manabase. Did you had issues casting it?
Are you happy with 3x Phantasmal Image and 3x Reflector Mage?
Hello guys, I'm new here, just discovered this page and I find it very insteresting.
Answering to BartHenryksson, just won a local tournament yesterday. Only played two Auriok on my SB, but I really recommended 3 copies (I consider 4 too much). Its really really good against Grixis Shadow and freewin against Burn, also good against Dredge and Jund. No doubt Auriok is one of the best cards right now after the ban of KCI on the SB, and also Knight of Atumumn (in love with this card).
Thank you both for your replies and congrats to your win Dirty Rat!
can you tell me how you feel about Auriok Champion? I see her popping up in every SB between 3-4 copies.
Maybe I'm missing something here... in what Matchups do you want to see her?
Hey,
tried Jim's list this friday with some small changes: Temple Garden over Breeding Pool to have a better rate on casting my SB cards. Damping Sphere for all those Titan players...
Finished 3-1. Winning 2-1 against a 4c reanimator deck, 2-0 vs Jund and 2-0 vs Un-Storm. My loss was against Twinless Twin - Splinter Twin[/card] should stay banned!!!
Deck felt good. The manabase is a scatchy sometimes and could be hard against aggresive decks. Path was HUGE! The lack of Kitesail Freebooter wasn't as bad as I thought. She's a good card but I think you can race combo decks and the disruption from Thalia, Guardian of Thraben and Meddling Mage is enough. Speaking of Thalia - I was not a fan of the 4th copy but I feel like she's to good in the current meta.
Fortunately I dodged UR Phoenix but I think Path and RiP are huge additions to a rather bad matchup.
Today I tested the deck against Abzan, Dredge and Affinity and the SB was awesome!
Will play this configuration for the next weeks and keep you up to date!
Personally I'm not a big fan of Venser, Shaper Savant and the second copy of Tajic, Legion's Blade. Also I don't like the Tireless Tracker in the SB. I think she has not enough impact the turn she enters the battlefield and even 20 lands aren't enough to generate value. But that just my two cents.
The manabase looks good and provides 15 white mana sources - should be enough to play your white SB cards.
What I really like is the come back of Mayor of Avabruck. I tried him myself and and he provides a faster clock. Not sure if it's right to replace Kitesail Freebooter with him but I really liked him in the maindeck.

while surfing on twitter I saw a tweet by Dylan Hand playing humans on MTGO.
Why I am posting? Because he was playing with shocklands and Path to Exile.
https://twitter.com/IngrathisMTG/status/1083498597746991104
Can't find a decklist but I think the deck is trimmed to bant (splashing red for Mantis Rider) and maybe back to Collected Company+Aether Vial.
What do you think?
But I misread your og post I thought Laplasjan is playing with Scryb Ranger now.
The big question is what to cut?
Hey man!
Do you have a list? I really like scryb ranger and want to try it on modern!
