Thanks for your reply FuneralofGod. I'll try to keep Sun Titan in then, he works particularly well with Ghost Quarter.
You're right, I wouldn't know on what creature to cast Journey to Eternity. It wouldn't be great on baby Jace, nor on Lingering Souls token. This leaves Snapcaster and Grim Flayer, with which I have to chumpblock... A bit complicated to flip it I admit.
I would like to try one copy of Ashiok, Nightmare Weaver. I know some people here have tried him(her) out. Any good feedback about it?
That's an interesting list Nico61. How do you find Forbidden Alchemy?
@Breathe1234, when you talk about Elspeth, you're talking about Elspeth, Sun's Champion am I right? Perhaps I should find a spot for her in my sideboard.
What do you guys think about the new card Journey to Eternity? The reanimation effect is just great in our deck, since it is our main objective. But I wonder if it would be difficult to flip. We do not have many creatures to target with an aura, and we are not playing a sacrifice engine (well except if we target ourselves with Liliana...).
I am planning to attend a Grand Prix in Modern in less than a month. I think that i'll bring this deck with me. So I am still working on it, and am open to suggestion. For instance, would you play Tasigur, the Golden Fang over Sun Titan or not?
@Scarmask I like your list. It is quite close to mine actually. You have Tarmogoyfs instead of baby Jace and the Life from the loam + raven's crime combo in the main deck. Regarding Grim Flayer, Jace, Vryn's Prodigy and Collective Brutality also help getting the delirium if it cannot attack as a 2/2. I agree that I do not run much green, but I just enjoy playing Grim flayer, and Abrupt Decay and Maelstrom Pulse are very useful cards in our deck to get rid of annoying enchantments, artifacts or planeswalkers. Plus it allows us to play Life from the Loam and Raven's Crime!
I wouldn't really know with what to replace those cards in the Esper shell. Perhaps some counterspells, Serum vision, Detention Sphere, Cryptic Command?
Against Eldrazi Tron, Ghost Quarter and life from the loam are great. For game 2 and 3 I would enter surgical extraction if you can hit one of their main cards with your discard. Also enter Terastodon. Fatal push on the other hand can be removed from main deck. Would you consider Ceremonious Rejection in your sideboard?
@Dejadal well done! Always happy to see when gifts deck make good results. Interesting you are playing 4 inquisition and no thoughtseize. How does it work out?
Absolutely love your list. I think Grim Flayer is easily the best choice for a steady beater. He fuels our plans and, as mentioned, still provides use if facing graveyard hate. How are you liking Sun Titan? It's always been a staple for me, even over Grave Titan. His interactions with LOTV, Eternal Witness, detention sphere, and even JVP are insanely significant.
Do you ever feel yourself lacking in turn-1 discard effects? What do you find yourself using JVP to recast mostly, besides gifts?
Thanks FuneralofGod. I love Grim Flayer. They put early pressure on the opponent, allow us to dig into our library for specific cards and also help us feed our graveyard with cards we don't want in our hands (Iona, Shield of Emeria, Elesh Norn, Grand Cenobite,Unburial Rites, Lingering Souls among others). It never disappoints me and I think I will stay with 3 copies.
Regarding Sun Titan, I really like the card, and it has been useful in some particular game. It gets back both Lilianas, baby Jace, Grim Flayer, Snapcaster Mage, Fetches and Ghost Quarter which is very useful against some matchups (thinking of Tron and Valakut)). Even post-board it helps getting back Detention Sphere or Fulminator Mage. The only problem with it is that I rarely get to hardcast it, and usually when I gift for Unburial Rites I prefer to get the Iona or Elesh Norn package. I think Sun Titan competes with Tasigur, the Golden Fang, Tasigur being easier to cast. But overall I enjoy playing with it. I removed Eternal Witness as I think Sun Titan, baby Jace and Snapcaster Mage are enough to get back any cards from our graveyard.
Mostly with Jace, I mostly use it to re-cast removal spells, but it depends of the situation. Collective Brutality is probably one of the cards I target most.
Sure sometimes I wish I had more discard spells so I get at least one in my opening hand, but overall 5 discard spells at 1cmc and 2 at 2cmc are enough, since we can re-use them later with Snap and Jace.
Overall I'm pretty happy with my deck (what deck allows you to play Iona, baby Jace, and Grim Flayer in the same shell???), though I'm sure it could be improved. (perhaps one more LOFTV, a Tasigur, etc.)
I made a few changes to my previous list. I post it here below:
@Breathe1234 Your list is interesting. Since you're splashing red, have you considered playing Lightning Bolt? Also do you think Snapcaster Mage could get a spot in your list?
Have you guys check some of the new cards from Rivals of Ixalan? Up to now two cards got my attention World Shaper and Journey to Eternity//Atzal, Cave of Eternity. World Shaper digs our library and can help us ramp once it dies since our graveyard is very often filled with lands. This might help us hardcast high costed spells (Iona, Sun titan or Elesh Norn). And Journey to Eternity once flipped is like our Unburial Rites, allowing us to recast Iona or Elesh indefinitely from our graveyard. What's more, it's an enchantment, which can help Grim Flayer's delirium once in the grave. Would be very interesting to get your opinions on the upcoming cards!
I like the idea of the Green Splash Salamar. How have you been doing so far with that deck? Wouldn't you try some copies of Thalia, Heretic Cathar (if they come turn two thank to Noble Hierarch) it will be quite powerful.
There will be a big Modern event in two weeks from now, and I will probably bring my Mono-W D&T deck, as I think it can be quite powerful at the moment against major decks, such as Titan Shift, Burn or Death Shadows.
At the moment I have the following deck (note that Ixalan will be legal by then):
What do you think about it? Your feedback would be greatly appreciated
Also, I might consider to try Settle the Wreckage in the sideboard. It might be good against wide-spread strategies such as merfolk or edlrazis (since our creatures are most of the time too small to fight them). And the card gets even better with Arbiter or Mindcensor on the field.
Thank you!!
As you can see, I put 9 fetch lands, 1 Ravland of each pair of colors, 1 ghost quarter, 1 Urborg, and one basic of each. Up to now, I haven't had any problems with my mana base when playing, though I guess it could be a bit better with more copies of Verdant Catacombs.
I also wish I could have a third Liliana of the Veil, but that works for now. Also I was thinking of removing Eternal Witness for a fourth Gifts Ungiven. I've never really got value out of it, since I can mostly get sorceries/instants back with baby Jace, and Sun Titan get the other permanents from the graveyard.
Overall I really enjoy playing that deck, and will certainly bring it to my next FNM. However it gets tough against fast match-ups, like burn, but if the game is getting long, we get so much value from our cards, it's insane!
Also, looking at the cards from Ixalan, what do you guys think of Search for Azcanta // Azcanta, the sunken Ruin as a 1-of. It seems quite powerful in our deck. Filtering our draws, getting value from our graveyard (flashbacks, delirium), also when it transforms, we get to dig 4 on top of our deck at instant speed! I will definitely try to find one space for it. What's your opinion about that card?
I agree with Hekks, you need som grave-hate, unless you know there are no graveyard-based decks at your store. Rest in Peace or Relic of Progenitus are good choices. I also like Blessed Alliance in my side (but i'm playing mono-W, perhaps BW Eldrazi have different sideboards).
The card is very versatile and was helpful every time I played it (especially against aura hexproof).
Yes, I agree that it would restrict our white sources. As I'm not playing any Edlrazis, the colorless mana aren't useful to my deck.
What do you think about the following manabase:
This makes 13 white sources and 10 colorless. I used to play Sea gate wreckage, but as we have Thraben Inspector, I replaced it with a white source instead.
Congratulations on your results Drayton! Glad to see 4C Gifts is still pulling good results! Thanks for the report too.
Seems Grim Flayerand Liliana, the Last Hope were very helpful. How many Liliana, the last hope did you play?
Your maindeck list seems solid Tsunamii. Pretty standard list, but that has proven good results.
Regarding your sideboard, I would definitely add Mirran Crusader X2 or X3. It is very efficient against popular decks, such as Death Shadows and it sometimes sees play in maindecks according to the meta. Perhaps replace some of your grave-hate in your sideboard with Mirran Crusader? 2 Rest in Peace and 2 Relic seems a bit much, unless you know you're going to play against many graveyard-based decks.
I usually prefer spot removals to Stony Silence, as it hits our own vials, copters, clue tokens (and relic of progenitus if boarded in). I understand it is very strong against certain matchup, but I prefer cards like Disenchant, Suppression Field or Aura of silence and even Fragmentize, but that's my own opinion.
I also hope that Horizon Canopy will drop in price with Iconic Masters. These are much needed in my decks to help in long games.
I'm really hyped about the new land revealed, Field of Ruin! I'll definitely try them X3 in my Mono-W list! Or would 10 Land Destruction lands be too much?
Had the opportunity to test my deck last weekend against Scapeshift, but was wondering what should I gift for? My opponent already had one Valakut, the Molten Pinnacle on the board with four mountains and one small creature. I gifted for Ghost Quarter, Fulminator Mage, Unburial Rites and Sun Titan. I don't know if I made the right choice. Should have I gifted for Iona, Shield of Emeria and Unburial Rites instead, calling for Green?
I ended up winning though, but took several turns still. Would really appreciate your insight on this
There is a Modern FNM this week, with a foil Liliana of the veil to win for the 1st. Might be useful for my deck one additional Liliana!
Thanks a lot Drayton for your feedback. This actually helps a lot. I really appreciate it.
I'll take a closer look to your comment over the weekend, as you seem to be very familiar with the deck. But at first sight I understand your point. The manabase will be the most difficult to fix. As you stated it is mostly Sultai colors early game, except these 3 path to exile, which I hope to split into 1 path and 3 Fatal Push in the near futur to avoid White mana constraint in early game.
One question though regarding your comment on the Life from the Loam and Raven's Crime combo. You stated that Urborg, Tomb of Yawgmoth is a necessity. How does it affect the combo? I cannot find how it works. Sorry if it seems obvious.
I'll work on my deck and will post an updated list this weekend hopefully, so that I can bring it to the next Modern tournament the following week
Hi everyone!
Newish to the deck and new to this thread. I finished building my 4C Gift deck a few weeks ago, and brought it to my Modern FNM. Went 2-2. Even if I didn't do the best score, I absolutely enjoyed playing the deck! The Unburial Rites and Elesh Norn, Grand Cenobite combo was game everytime it hit the table. However lost my two matches against decks that were way too fast for me: Affinity and UR Gift Storm. Won once against affinity thanks to my two Stony Silence in my sideboard, but got wrecked when I didn't have them on the battlefield. But against UR Storm, I really had no idea what to side in, nor what strategy to adopt? What do you usually play against that deck?
Thank you ppkitty for your insight on Hostile Desert. You're probably right saying we would rather need these 2 mana to cast a creature spell rather than activate that manland. I'll probably try Shefet Dunes in one or two copies instead, as most of you seemed to have got good results with it.
Regarding Thalia, Heretic Cathar, I really do like the card. In every game I had her on the battlefield, she did help a lot. Her tapping ability considerably slows down the opponent and the first strike is very effective, especially if you have an aether vial on 3 and put it onto the battlefield to block another creature. I play minimum two copies of her.
You're right, I wouldn't know on what creature to cast Journey to Eternity. It wouldn't be great on baby Jace, nor on Lingering Souls token. This leaves Snapcaster and Grim Flayer, with which I have to chumpblock... A bit complicated to flip it I admit.

It's been a while since I've last posted. Glad to see that the thread has been more active lately! This is a wonderful deck
What do you think about it? Your feedback would be greatly appreciated

I finally got some of the missing cards to improve my deck, thanks to your feedback Drayton. So after some thoughts, I came up with the following:
3 Inquisition of Kozilek
2 Thoughtseize
1 Collective Brutality
3 Lingering Souls
1 Maelstrom Pulse
1 Unburial Rites
(10) Instant

Good luck on your FNM!

3 Inquisition of Kozilek

1 Polluted Delta
2 Watery Grave
2 Windswept Heath
1 Temple Garden
2 Misty Rainforest

And my sideboard looks like this:
1 Dispel
1 Raven's Crime
2 Nihil Spellbomb
2 Countersquall
2 Stony Silence
1 Scavenging Ooze
1 Life from the Loam
1 Fulminator Mage
1 Supreme Verdict
1 Narset Transcendent
1 Elspeth, Sun's Champion
1 Terastodon
Thank you in advance for your feedback. Hope I can improve my deck very soon
