Edit 2: #74 brings up a quibble I've always had. Why aren't you allowed to have cards that roll dice, but you can have cards that flip a coin?
My guess would be that 99.99% of players always have a coin or two nearby, but a significant number of players don't carry dice.

Also dice can sub for coins but if you don't have dice and are asked for them it's harder to properly simulate

Gah. I really want to hear results and see If I made the cut. We should know when you think? Tomorrow or Tuesday? They said they wanted to give 5 days for the next round and it ends February 3rd if they stick to their schedule.

    MaRo says Tuesday.

*****, i did the same thing! my first go thru i had it at uncommon and changed it last minute to common. ugh

I think it's also too big for red at common - typically green gets 1-2 and blue gets 0-1 large common creatures, but red/white/black don't.

i answered the slow flicker change. i see your point, but as the question is about this specific interaction i still feel that's the likely answer. what do you think it was instead?

I'm also curious about this. The other answers did not seem good to me, for various reasons.

you can also see incorrect syntax on Burning of xinye. Almost certainly not real.

You are incorrect. Go to Gatherer for the current Oracle text, which is printed in the image.

What a surprise, for the millionth time, red is the worst color in a set. All bad removal, at least in Theros it had lightning strike. Few good creatures. Also, all of red's possible seeded pack rares (not the promo) are either overcosted, situational, or just weak.

So much salt... Red actually has a number of good ones this time around, even if you choose to ignore them.

seems good with Archetype of Aggression. Deathtouch + Trample is fun. Smile

    How about Archetype of Courage?

ISD-ISD-ISD didn't have amazing removal either and it was one of the best draft formats ever.

Not trying to derail the thread, but I'm having trouble understanding this claim. Innistrad featured the very powerful removal spells Claustrophobia, Brimstone Volley, Dead Weight, and Victim of Night, as well as the conditional Pacifism and tapper Bonds of Faith and Avacyn's Pilgrim. Is there some numerical analysis I'm missing here?

On topic, my experience at the prerelease was that the format confirmed the feeling that there is little removal, and that it is sorcery speed. I did, however, get the sense that bounce and tap effects were still good ways to answer creatures.

Scry is called card advantage because people have shown that Scry 1 equates to essentially 1/2 a card meaning it is effectively card advantage mathematically...

You're arguing that because Scry 1 is WORTH half a card that it should be counted that way when evaluating card advantage. I would disagree; it's fine to count scry 1 as worth half a card when evaluating the power and efficiency of a card, but it's simply not card advantage. Yes, it improves card quality, but though that's a useful and important thing, it's not card advantage.

For the record, I think elspeth is one of the strongest limited walkers we've seen.

Top half, sure. Not one of the strongest. The strongest make larger tokens AND cost less mana (such as all three Garruks prior to Caller of Beasts) or kill the opponent directly (Jace, Memory Adept or Gideon Jura). I don't think Elspeth is the best planeswalker in this set (Xenagos, the Reveler costs a mere 4 mana and makes 2/2s before ramping you into large things).

Historical perspective suggests that there are cards as absurd as pack rat once a block or less. Perhaps there will be one in Theros, but it's something Wizards tries to keep a lid on, for obvious reasons.

No, the rare duals from Kamigawa are vastly worse. There is no comparison. These are playable, and those were not even close, even in a slower meta.

They're also not rare, somewhat ruining the comparison.

On topic, these dual lands are quite good. Getting additional value out of your land drop is, in fact, sweet, even if it takes a pro playing with the cards for people to realize it.

I will try to get a list of cards I got from my draft this friday. Looking at videos online I am getting a better idea of cards I wanna keep a look out for/potentials

Watching draft videos online can give you a good idea of the sorts of things that good players look for. I would recommend most anyone on channelfireball.com/videos, though my favorite is LSV. I don't think they have any M14 yet, but you could certainly watch some of the older videos to get an idea of the general thought process.

I would echo the advice given to look at whether the cards you are playing in your deck are good. This is a somewhat nebulous concept, but you want to prioritize removal spells and solid creatures, keeping an eye out for what you are being passed to get an idea of what colors are open (and therefore you should consider drafting). Having a general feel for how your curve looks is a good idea as well, as you want to be able to play things each turn but be able to cast more expensive and powerful cards in the late game, so you need some mix of early- and late-game cards.

No, it was filled with Modern legal, but not Modern (the constructed format) playable dreck that was there for limited casual only.

So you wanted them to just print you a boxed set of 4 of each modern playable card? This is Magic, not YuGiOh.

As noted, the ability will resolve, but the key here is the "if you do" in Vendilion Clique's triggered ability, which means that as you have no cards to select, when you then fail to select one, none of the rest of the ability happens (so you don't put anything on the bottom and don't draw a card).

  • posted a message on Valakut Trigger question
Correct. The triggers will check on resolution as well as before being put on the stack. In this case, only the one belonging to the land destroyed by Beast Within will resolve, as it will see 5 other Mountains, while the others will only see 4.
