I really hate how the MTG community only cares about the quality of cards in order to judge a set. A beautiful set like Kamigawa or Theros is a failure because it was underpowered, but everyone is going crazy over Battlebond because ''it has lots of value''. **** this *****.

Battlebond is the ugliest set I have ever seen.

Probably because, at the end of the day, Magic is a game. So gameplay will be the top deciding factor more often than not.

I'm willing to bet that there are people who wouldn't care if the cards had no art or flavour text whatsoever.

And in the last story I read, she asked people how to not be like that. She's still in deep, but it's clear that she's interested in finding out if there's an alternative way to live her life.

Yes but Bolas has walked the talk so to speak.
He put down a Demonic Leviathan and Ugin.
    Teferi and Lesherac as well.

Mizzet is top 3 on Ravnica with I guess Rakdos and Ma'at

It's all relative. Niv is the head of one of the 10 guilds, he's not someone you usually mess with 1v1 as a Ravnican unless you're a Nephilim, and he's a genius. Bolas is leagues above all that, but that (to me) doesn't really diminish Niv-Mizzet's accomplishments.

There is no point in being salty.

A year ago, we would never expect to even SEE Dominaria and its characters again. Now, we got an outright great set stuffed to the roof with awesome references. Jodah card, Jaya PW card, awesome new cards for Teferi, Jhoira. Weatherlight vehicle card. Updated Dominaria map. Tell me, how many of this you would thought possible at the beginning on 2017?

When I see reactions like this, I see a kid who was given something they passionately wished for for years, and now they are whining because it is not exactly the color they wanted.

Your whole list there are the things people liked about Dominaria. Genuinely don't recall anyone complaining about the things on that list. Feels like a strawman to set up a whining kid reference, especially ironic since you go on to have some critiques of the story, same as many others in the forum.

And since this is a story forum, it's naive to think people won't criticize the story. It's literally the place to do it. Like walking into a grocery store and complaining that there's all this food. This forum is populated by people who care (often very deeply) about the story. So since this is a topic-specific thread in a topic-specific forum, saying 'everything but the story was great, stop whining, kids' in a story-specific thread and forum is just silly.

    Anyway.

Quick question about Liliana and the Chain Veil. My initial impression years ago was that to pull off huge feats of magic, she would have to tap into the Veil. Now, it seems she can't do much without the Veil, and getting rid of the demon pacts will give her her power back again. Is this a change, and if so, when did that happen? I don't recall.
Salty for agreeing with the critique about Teferi re-sparking off-screen.

And I'm not some kid being given what they want, for the record. While I admire past characters getting cards (so that I get the ones I want, which I haven't yet, this year) I actually don't care for Dominaria or any of its characters or even most of its cards. I have a pretty solid reputation for caring only about Jace, Theros and Kamigawa lore. I never read any of the old material, and the only thing I care to know about Dominaria is the Umezawa connection with the Myojin of Night's Reach and passing references to Marit Lage. So I fail to see how getting cards I didn't care to have dictates how critical I can be about the story.

I have a less-solid reputation for caring mostly about Alara and its lore. I have some interest in most planes that the game has visited, including Dominaria, but Alara as a world just appeals to me a lot more. The only people currently in the story with ties to the plane have no discernible reason to go back there any time soon.
I loved Esper on Alara. To a lesser extent Bant, but not the others. It was pretty cool. I'd like to know more about Silas Renn specifically, since most of the source material on him isn't canon. I imagine his blurb and perhaps some comics are, but that's a limited pool of information.

Well, between The Seeker's Fall comics and the fact that the Seekers themselves were a shady organization that Bolas used for his schemes, Silas hasn't had the most positive signals about his character. His card being UB, a color combination not normally associated with a goody-two-shoes, doesn't help his case there either.

Also, he's probably aged quite a bit since the time period his card depicts him in, if that's something bothers you.

Teferi reascending offscreen...no explanation how Jhoira extracted the spark back into the stone...extensive focus on Gideon and Liliana, and at best, the neWeatherlight crew...
Why would any of that be relevant when we can have a story about mushrooms. Which is exactly what Creative was on when it decided that.

I doubt Kaya will represent orzhov. She's a ghost assassin, she exterminates ghost, orzhov is runned by ghosts

They're run by the Obzedat now, but Teysa wants to overthrow the ghosts, and Kaya is just the person she needs to get the job done.

We don't know the details of what angels and demons on this plane are like, so why this hyperbole?

Until Arena is released and proves itself, Magic cannot compete with e-sports. No one likes watching MTGO (it is old and clunky) and watching paper matches is fun but ultimately less enjoyable than watching Arena.

I actually prefer watching MTGO to paper, but I don't mind watching paper as long as it isn't hours long.

Every single thread I've seen Negator_402 in ends up being derailed into this stuff.

Anyway, I don't have an issue with Return to Return to Ravnica getting 3 sets, since you need at least 2 for the Guilds and the last one is presumably for the Bolas invasion. It's also still the 25th anniversary, so using one of the popular planes makes some sense in that context, and it's relatively "safe". Also, while I don't share the hostility towards the Gatewatch or Bolas storyline, I do want it to end at some point so we can get something new. So, I'm not opposed to it ending here.

Is that you, Tibor and Lumia?

    Wrong plane.

Will is better equipped to work on his own, because blue wasn't good enough already, and I like blue.

I like both their ultimates, and how their loyalty abilities synergize with each other to play up the team aspect, but I wish Rowan could do more by herself.

The Gatewatch hate is still a thing after all this time, eh?

Very much so. I would be more than happy with Planeswalkers not being a story focus point, and letting the sets sell themselves based on their overall appeal.

The Gatewatch is even worse. I mean why would you think it wouldnt be a thing? Its not like people get over things they dislike, especially if they have to swallow it every single set.

The ramp down of the gatewatch 'face time' in Dominaria cards/art is a huge reason why I enjoy the set more than Kaladesh/Amonkhet. Both are fine sets, but I'm in this for the story of magic, the story of the planes, I dont really care to see Gideon on a bunch of cards, or Jace.

I didn't think it wouldn't be a thing. There are too many people in the playerbase for that to be possible. It's the reasoning for it that I'm interested in.

My predicitons for the storyline: All the guilds + the Gatewatch gang up on Bolas. That's why it's called Ravnica allegiance. And the guilds not killing eachother means Wotc get a nice excuse for preserving the status quo on their most popular plane instead of just magically reseting everything at the end of the block (happened with Rav1 and Rav2).

Original Ravnica is my favourite Magic set, so I am kind of excited to see how things shape up. But the shown concept arts do not fill me with hope. Don't like that Rakdos are some sort of performers now and the Dimir look just plain retarded.

    We will see what happens.

Didn't the Rakdos always have performers? I even remember reading that some members are used for manual labour.

Why are people comparing Niv and Bolas?

Other than both are Dragons, they're clearly different in terms of power, age, size, ambition, etc.

Has no one seen how huge Bolas is in actual form?

That said, I do expect Niv to become an Elder Dragon in card form.

Will the 3rd set be called Dragon's Raze/Blaze/Haze? And feature an actual dragon/dragon walker in the set? As to why they won't name the set, it's quite clear the name of the set has to do with the winner of the war. I'm hoping it's Bolas, but we know Wizards usually goes with the Disney route.

Bolas winning means that Ravnica either becomes his personal domain or it gets the Hour of Devastation treatment. If you're like Tiro and hate the plane for whatever reason, then that's fine. If not, which is a lot of people if one is to believe it's one of the most popular planes, it's a very risky move.
