Hi Torpf, I think a large problem of the primer, and indeed the discussion on this deck is that it is so utterly fragmented into it's different constituent decks, them being; Knightfall, Bant Company, Bant Vizier, Bant Knightfall Vizier. Each is essentially a fairly different deck, and everyone seemingly deserving their own segment on the decks, entirely separate from one another.

    Some hopefully helpful criticism of the current primer, and then some possible suggestions;

    Criticism;
    • The Archangel of Thune + Spike Feeder combo I believe literally hasn't been played in a single competitive Bant list in over a year, and deserves no place in a primer for Knightfall.
    • The Sample deck-lists are poorly out of date.
    • The distinction of segregating the two Vizier decks from the two Midrange decks is paramount. This is seen in the 'proven maindeck creatures' section, where it places Duskwatch Recruiter next to Voice and Ooze. To be honest, in my opinion, the vizier version of this deck is entirely a combo deck and has no place in this self sectioned Midrange primer, as this is the Knightfall/Bant Company primer.
    • The Inclusion of Chord in the proven maindeck non-creature spells along side CoCo, Retreat and Path is like, well no I'm sorry it's utterly not. It's only seen in Vizier lists and is paramount there, and basically unplayable in the value lists. We need a segregation of the decks categorisation to have clear discussions on the improvements to both in the future.
    • Rhox War Monk and Rest in Peace are laughable to be in the recommended sideboard section
    • The primer shows its age when UR delver is referenced in the argument for Eidolon of Rhetoric being good.

    Some Suggestions;
    1. Have a section discussing the advantages/disadvantages to play of the 7/8 dork 22/23 land debate
    2. Have a section discussing the validity of the red splash and the sideboard cards that come along with it (Izzet Staticaster/Crumble to Dust) vs the play of Straight Bant, sometimes with the addition of Sejiri Steppe.
    3. Have a section discussing the use of the two drops as our hate card package for the metagame
    4. Have a section discussing the play of the difference suit of counter spells from the board
    5. Based on the most recent lists averaging in 2018 the breakdown of mainboard staples vs addition card choices should look something like, at least for the Knightfall/Bant Company section, being as non biased as possible.
    6. Proven Maindeck Creatures;
      • Noble Hierarch & Birds of Paradise
      • Voice of Resurgence
      • Scavenging Ooze
      • Qasali Pridemage
      • Meddling Mage
      • Selfless Spirit
      • Knight of the Reliquary
      • Spell Queller
      • Tireless Tracker
      • Reflector Mage
      • Courser of Kruphix
      • Eternal Witness

Proven Sideboard Choices - Being as unbiased and accurate as possible.
      • Bojuka Bog
      • Ghost Quarter
      • Blessed Alliance
      • Settle the Wreckage
      • Worship
      • Kitchen Finks
      • Burrenton Forge-Tender
      • Vendilion Clique
      • Thrun, the Last Troll
      • Mirran Crusader
      • Izzet Staticaster
      • Thalia, Heretic Cathar
      • Spellskite
      • Stony Silence
      • Damping Sphere
      • Eidolon of Rhetoric
      • Reclamation Sage
      • Fracturing Gust
      • Creeping Corrosion
      • Negate
      • Unified Will
      • Flashfreeze
      • Disdainful Stroke
      • Izzet Staticaster
      • Crumble to Dust
      • Gideon, Ally of Zendikar
      • Jace, the Mind-Sculptor
      • Elspeth, Sun's Champion
      • Archangel Avacyn
      • Dromoka's Command
      • Geist of Saint Traft
      • Shalai, Voice of Plenty

Anyway, those are some brief suggestions on skimming through it, hope this helps!

Hey Guys, So I've seen Red Knightfall with BBE do well online recently, and I've gone around and theory-crafted and started to test this deck, and I really like it. Could I get some feedback?

      4 Noble Hierarchs
      4 Birds of Paradise

      2 Voice of Resurgence
      2 Scavenging Ooze
      2 Qasali Pridemage
      2 Meddling Mage

      4 Knight of the Reliquary
      4 Reflector Mage
      2 Tireless Tracker
      2 Courser of Kruphix

      4 Bloodbraid Elf
      4 Collected Company
      2 Retreat to Coralhelm

      4 Misty Rainforest
      4 Windswept Heath
      1 Flooded Strand
      3 Forest
      1 Plains
      1 Botanical Sanctum
      1 Breeding Pool
      1 Temple Garden
      1 Hallowed Fountain
      1 Stomping Ground
      1 Sacred Foundry
      1 Kessig Wolf Run
      1 Gavony Township
      1 Horizon Canopy

    SIDE

      1 Bojuka Bog
      4 Spell Queller
      2 Kitchen Finks
      2 Izzet Staticaster
      2 Mirran Crusader
      2 Eidolon of Rhetoric
      2 Thalia, Heretic Cathar

A comment on some choices and the feel of the matches so far.

Queller and BBE are powerhouses of cards, but the common wisdom of the crowd so far in so much as the decks appearing online say that they shouldn't be in the same deck. However, I've realised that you don't really want them in the same matches, and so the decks that were running BBE didn't have Queller in the 75, which I actually think you can work around . However, siding in 4 Queller in place of the 4 BBE against things like Storm, Burn, Hollow-One, Affinity, Bogles, Ad Nauseum, Titanshift, Lantern and Living-End feels really really good. Against the Junds/Midrange and Control decks of the world BBE is just far better, as it is essentially CoCo 5-8.

Now the manabase really doesn't change that much from the original versions of Knightfall with red for the Kessig and Staticasters in the board. The only change is +1 Sacred Foundry and -1 Ghost Quarter. I admit this makes us more of a dog to Tron, but to be honest you cannot have this style of deck have a positive Tron matchup in G1 without severely compromising the entire maindeck. It's ok and infact unavoidable for decks to have weak matchups. With Damping Sphere coming out in 4 weeks, this might become far more manageable. We still also have the combo as ever game one. Anyway, I've had no real trouble casting anything in this deck. We do rely on T1 Dork, but we always do to have a strong game. That's the deck.

With the increased grind, this deck feels like it just NEVER runs out of gas throughout all of the game. Mid-range decks feel frankly easy. I adore the sideboard in this iteration of the deck, as we just board into the best 3 drops in the game. Period. Each of them a fantastic silver bullet. I really miss queller, but again, in many of the matchups we board into him, along with things like Eidolon/Bojuka Bog/Mirran Crusader for example against Storm.

My Concerns - Burn/Tron/Bogles/Ad Nauseum. These matchups are unfavourable atleast in G1. Manabase is consistant but can be slightly more painful than the average. This was always somewhat the case. Knight/Dorks/Courser often do entirely mitigate this issue. We have the combo as always that 12%-15% of the time just wins us G1 on turn 3... Smile

My Arguments for this deck - With 4 Reflector Mage/2 Tireless/2 Courser/4 BBE mainboard as well as the usual suspects, we CRUSH mid-range and control decks to the point of hilarity. We have a very even match-up G1 against 3/4 of the most popular aggro decks in the format - Humans/Affinity/Hollow-One. Again, the main concern is burn. however we can just go T2 Courser of Kruphix...

My Questions - The deck obviously isn't entirely finished, but I think it's idea is very simple and very strong. What do you guys think about the entire thing, and these other cards I've been considering:

Vendilion Clique - More sideboard power against Combo.

Thalia, Guardian of Thraben - Mainboard as a two of over Qasali Pridemage, to bolster our game against Combo G1. Although she comes with the nonbo of BBE into Retreat and CoCo being 5 Mana. However I believe she hurts the decks we want to hurt FAR more than us, which is sort of the point? We play an equivalent number of non-creature spells as the Taxes lists.

More Kitchen Finks in the board for the Aggro Matchups. Possibly +1 Finks -1 Thalia, Heretic Cathar
Thanks for reading! I know there are a lot of iterations on this deck out there at the moment, and finding the best one is just such fun at the moment. I've also finished foiling it out in paper entirely now Smile

    Have a great day.

    Hey Broster,

    Mostly really like your list.
Personally, I think it's probably worth -1 Blessed for +1 Worship
and possibly -1 Stony for +1 Bojuka Bog.

But apart from that we're almost on the same list, except I'm still with Retreats. They are just so good.

    Good luck man!

So I've just done some serious testing with my friends, and I have these following suspicions - would like to know your guys thoughts. Bant is obviously not dead, honestly the format probably isn't going to change that much and we're positioned about as well as we were before. We still have to fight the exact same decks that were present before - degenerate aggro and combo, except there are just Jace and BBE decks now. In terms of fighting the Jace decks - We get Jace aswell! and we are fine against the BBE Decks imo.

So I've got two decklists I've come up with and would like criticism on. Although I feel they are pretty damn good Smile
    Classic Knightfall w/ JtMS
    4 Noble
    3 Birds

    3 Voice
    3 Ooze

    4 Knight
    4 Queller
    3 Reflector
    2 Courser
    2 Tracker

    4 Path
    4 CoCo
    1 Retreat
    1 Jace

    4 Misty
    4 Heath
    1 Strand
    1 Temple Garden
    1 Hallowed Fountain
    1 Breeding Pool
    3 Forest
    2 Plains
    1 Island
    1 Gavony Township
    1 Horizon Canopy
    1 Sejiri Steppe
    1 Ghost Quarter

    Side;
2 Eidolon Of Rhetoric (Hurts Jace and BBE decks hard + Storm/Control/Combo Killer - Insane Queller Synergy)
2 Kitchen Finks (Burn/Humans/Affinity gonna be rampant I think)
    2 Mirran Crusader (BBE Decks)
1 Thrun, the Last Troll (Jace Decks)
1 Stony Silence (Don't leave home without at least one is always a good rule)
    2 Negate (Mainstay)
1 Settle the Wreckage (Blowout on Humans/Dredge/Affinity/Hollow-One)
2 Unified Will (Jace Decks + General Control/Combo, although those two statements might be the same thing now)
1 Bojuka Bog/Ghost Quarter(Based on Meta - Tron or Dredge depending on which turns out to be better vs Jace decks)
    1 Elspeth, Knight-Errant (JtMS Killer)

Imo there is an awkward tension of keeping your creature count high and wanting Jace. I think the right number is 2 maindeck. But I also want 2-3 Retreat mainboard. I'm not sure how to fit it in the 60. So after having thought about that, I've come up with something that is actually very VERY spicy imo and seems to be testing disturbingly well...

    Bant Jace Evo

    4 Noble
    3 Birds

    3 Voice
    3 Ooze

    4 Knight
    4 Queller
    3 Reflector
    1 Tracker
    1 Courser
    1 Finks

    3 Eldritch Evolution
    4 Path to Exile
    3 Jace, the Mind Sculptor
    2 Retreat to Coralhelm

    4 Misty
    4 Heath
    1 Strand
    1 Temple Garden
    1 Hallowed Fountain
    1 Breeding Pool
    3 Forest
    2 Plains
    1 Island
    1 Gavony Township
    1 Horizon Canopy
    1 Sejiri Steppe
    1 Ghost Quarter

    Side;
Mostly the same board as Classic Knightfall but maybe moving in some new targets like Kor Firewalker as Bullets.

The numbers look strange, but actually this version feels incredibly smooth to play... Basically just defend your Jace the deck, and brainstorm into the combo... Again please try these out and tell me what you think!

Bento, I've been running Elspeth, Knight-Errant in my deck before these bannings, and you're correct, she is insane vs planeswalkers and DS decks. What do you think about my setup I've posted above?

Do you think it's correct to go back up to 4 Path mainboard? or is that just too many dead cards vs control with reflector mages mainboard as well?

I've got to say, reports of Bant Knightfall's death are greatly over exaggerated man. No way is this deck even half dead, I actually think that this makes it WAY easier to meta-game against.

Think about. Jace and BBE come back, so immediately there is an uptick in Blue-control decks, already something we were very well positioned against, but to rise and meet that, I believe Burn, Humans and Affinity, the three key-stone aggro decks of the format become way more prevalent, cause they just dump on the jace decks for the most part (Maybe Bogles/Infect/Hollow-One/Griselbrand stuff, you know the truely degenerate stuff becomes more popular - In which case Blessed Alliance and Settle the Wreckage go up in value in our sideboards - Easy)

That means that several things happen. I think we ignore boarding for combo/big mana as much and play 3 Retreat mainboard to fight that axis game 1. Focus on having a good match-up for the three main aggro decks, and also for the control decks, ignoring our match-ups for combo and big-mana - we're already going to be an easy favourite against BBE/Jund/Abzan decks as we are now.

What that means is I think we play the following mainboard. Reflector Mage, Tireless Tracker, Kitchen Finks.
That package is going to be really effective against humans/affinity/burn which will uptick, and Finks and Tracker have the double bonus of being allstars against Control. We also run more Voice mainboard, as again that card just hoses aggro and Control.

We want to sure up the match-ups that will become predictable? Sure thing - Lets make our sideboard very precise.

Also, as BBD has said... Bant Company might be one of the best decks for Jace to be in... But I'm not going to go down that rabbit hole.

As this is a brave new world as far as modern is concerned, this is how I'd build the deck now I think... But please help me theory craft!

    4 Noble Hierarch
3 Birds of Paradise (I think going to 3 is the right number in this meta now)
    3 Voice of Resurgence
    3 Thalia, Guardian of Thraben
    4 Knight of the Reliquary
    4 Spell Queller
    3 Reflector Mage
    2 Kitchen Finks
    2 Tireless Tracker

    3 Path to Exile
    4 Collected Company
    3 Retreat to Coralhelm

    4 Misty Rainforest
    4 Windswept Heath
    1 Flooded Strand
3 Forest (Uptick in Blood moon decks)
    2 Plains
    1 Island
    1 Hallowed Fountain
    1 Temple Garden
    1 Breeding Pool
1 Sejiri Steppe (Better than Kessig in this meta probably)
    1 Gavony Township
    1 Ghost Quarter
    1 Horizon Canopy

    Sideboard; (Super Theoretical atm)
    1 Thrun, The Last Troll
    3 Mirran Crusader
    2 Phyrexian Revoker
    1 Path to Exile
    1 Reflector Mage
    2 Blessed Alliance
    1 Settle the Wreckage
    3 Negate
    1 Eidolon of Rhetoric

Oh and on the plus side, I just finished foiling my Knightfall and so far in 2018 am sitting at 14 W - 5 D - 5 L in competitive Events Smile

Two Bant Knightfall lists went better than 18 points at the pro tour!

    https://magic.wizards.com/en/events/coverage/ptrix/21-23-point-decklists-2018-02-03
David Gross with what quite literally almost is G/W Valuetown but literally with two retreats in there along with unified wills in the sideboard.

    https://magic.wizards.com/en/events/coverage/ptrix/18-20-point-decklists-2018-02-03
Joao Lesis who took down the Sao Paulo GP I believe, with a very similar list, who I'm VERY happy to say looks a hell of lot like my current list, although our sideboards are very different. Btw SPICE in the two maindeck lightning greaves.

I sincerely believe a minimum of three retreats and three trackers are maindeck, as they just turn us into this obscene grinding midrange engine, and I've also adopted the two maindeck kitchen finks. Just such a good threat against burn/humans/U/W.

I've also cut down to straight bant, running sejiri-steppe and taking red outta there for consistancy.

Joao loves the 3/3 split of ceremonious and flashfreeze. Huh. I've been on 2/2 Negate and Unified for ages.

Also what do people think of the three Phyrexian Revoker? Like the card?

I assume the x2 Settle the Wreckage is for the humans match up that was predictably very prevalent.

Also Classic Thalia is back Smile

    @BentoBocx

    Mainboard;
    4 Noble Hierarch
    4 Birds of Paradise
    3 Scavenging Ooze
    2 Qasali Pridemage
    2 Voice of Resurgence
    4 Knight of the Reliquary
    4 Spell Queller
    3 Reflector Mage
    2 Tireless Tracker

    4 Collected Company
    4 Path to Exile
    2 Retreat to Coralhelm

    4 Misty Rainforest
    4 Windswept Heath
    1 Flooded Strand
    1 Temple Garden
    1 Hallowed Fountain
    1 Breeding Pool
    1 Stomping Ground
    1 Horizon Canopy
    1 Ghost Quarter
    1 Gavony Township
    1 Kessig Wolf Run
    3 Forest
    1 Plains
    1 Island

    Sideboard;
    1 Bojuka Bog
    1 Geist of Saint Traft
    1 Vendilion Clique
    2 Kitchen Finks
    2 Eidolon of Rhetoric
    2 Thalia, Heretic Cathar
    1 Manglehorn
    1 Stony Silence
    2 Unified Will
    2 Negate

So, I've gone through most the lists I've seen and done my own calculations, essentially ranking the top 25 decks in Modern based on prevalence in the current meta, and compared each possible flex slot in the mainboard(including lands) and sideboard options, giving them a rating between 1-10 based on their effectiveness in each matchup! I gave creatures a slight advantage, due to their being able to be hit and not weaken CoCo, and lands, as Knight can fetch them!

There are also a few assumptions I've made that I want to be challenged on.
    1. 8 Mana dorks not 7.
I actually played 7 dorks at my day 2 at GP Birmingham, but since then, just the rise of lantern control, and my adding Vendilion Clique to my sideboard and their ability to smooth out your hands... I'm still not sure which is better, and it's really annoying!
    2. Thalia, Guardian of Thraben is too much of a nonbo and shouldn't be played.
This comes from testing I've been doing, and as many times as shes hindered them, making CoCo turn 3 after her impossible, is just so limiting, same for the Negates and Unified's out of the sideboard that often come in against the same matchups. Plus she matchs up very very poorly against a few big meta decks.
    3. 7 two drops.
So essentially the two drop slot in Knightfall is dedicated to hate. I think 6 is too few to be smooth, 8 drains CoCo's power a little much, especially with 8 dorks, and in the two drop slot, we have 5 real options.
      Voice of Resurgence
      Scavenging Ooze
      Qasali Pridemage
      Selfless Spirit
      Thalia, Guardian of Thraben
We are already so weak to dredge, I think that no Knightfall list should EVER go below 2 Ooze, and I consider them not part of the 10 flex slots in the deck's mainboard.
I dodge between Qasalis/Voices/Selfless's numbers consistently and think I've settled down to where I currently am at. I only include Thalia in that list as other people run it. I've already stated my opinion above Smile

    Sideboard talk;
I love the split of 1 Manglehorn/1 Stony Silence. The fact is that with Affinity's recent tech's Stony really isn't the game over card people think it is. It's CRIPPLING. But it doesn't win the game. Manglehorn is in just such a good place against E-Tron, and Affinity alike, with the bonus of CoCo. It's SUCH a good combination against the meta.
I f**king love Vendilion Clique, and I want one mainboard, but for the life of me I don't know how to get it in there.
Geist mainboard is stupid, but in sideboard against control matchups/combo - It's just dumb. It's like the fastest clock you can get.
I've evaluated literally any 3 drop I've ever seen in modern in any Bant lists. I'm pretty sure I can defend any choice or any card I didn't include here, but please ask!

What do you guys think? I'm currently holding a 65.5~ win rate over 153 Paper matches in competitive tournaments in the last 10 months.

Congrats man, super happy for you.

My personal list since GP Birmingham is literally like 6-7 cards in the 75 off of yours, so I'm really happy. It's still being ridiculously good and my favorite deck of all time! I'm super close to finishing foiling it out.

    I've settled on this;

    4 Birds
    4 Noble
    2 Ooze
    2 Voice
    2 Selfless
    1 Qasali
    4 Knight
    4 Queller
    2 Tireless
    2 Aven
    1 Witness

    4 CoCo
    4 Path
    2 Retreat

    Now here is the spice;

A lot of people have been split in the knightfall community over the 22 land kessig, stomping ground, horizon canopy, botanical sanctum build for the landbase, and the 23 land sejiri steppe, 7 basic land version.

    So I've tested both extensively, and I've created my own middle ground;
    4 Misty
    4 Windswept
    1 Flooded
    3 Forest
    1 Plains
    1 Island
    1 Temple
    1 Fountain
    1 Stomping ground
    1 Breeding
    1 Horizon
    1 Ghost
    1 Gavony
    1 Kessig
1 Eternal Witness(Instead of Sejiri Steppe).... Yes I just said that. So my reasoning is the sejiri steppe is great, but is used to blank removal and occasionally push through damage via protection from the colour of their blockers if you have two knights out. However. I think having 28 creatures over 27 helps our CoCos. I basically think of the EWit as having the same function of sejiri but better, as you can just take back whatever they were using their removal spell on, and has more game in attrition matchups, as it buys back CoCos. I've always hated one EWit but I think it's actually really good now as this one of.

Now I love the painlessness of having more basics against decks like burn and affinity, so I've reasoned to take the botanical sanctum out for a basic island, moving up to 5 basics from 4, and only 2 away from the 7 in the sejiri version, giving us more game against blood moons, and allows a perfect 9/9 ratio of fetches to fetchables. One of the pleasantries for the 23 Sejiri steppe version is that combo'ing out is more precise but less painful. But I think that the usefulness of horizon canopy and kessig are just too good, but I think having 5 lands out of the 22 that can't be used to go through in the combo is too much, and now allows a basic island fetch at the end to help it along.

Also - As Dredge is one of our worst matchups by far. How are you rating Bojuka bog. I'm really close to playing it.
Also I'm running two Eidolon of Rhetorics where your two Phyrexian revokers are, as they just make Storm/Ad Nauseum/Control SUCH easy matchups.

What do you find yourself naming with Revoker and in what matchups are you finding it great?

    Thanks Grin

Hey guys! So I'm back from GP Birmingham, my first GP, and super happy to have made day 2! and as promised here is my tournament report - Fair warning, this is going to be a long post so I apologize in advance!

I feel like 69/75 cards that I took were correct. I felt I read the meta very closely, however I adapted it late Friday night at testing that night due to us playing modern side events all Friday, and seeing the absolute mass of Titanshift/Tron that was abundant at the GP. 2 Negate
    2 Unified Will

    My Reasoning for bringing this configuration;
Knightfall is classically very strong against Midrange and control, and struggles against Hard Aggro and Combo. My Mainboard was designed to Crush Aggro and Midrange - and over the weekend I did. Affinity, Burn, Grixis DS all felt great. My Sideboard was hedged against Combo and Aggro Mainly with 13/15 slots pushing against them, and just two slots for concessions to Midrange match-ups, which are already so good, due to the most underrated card in modern - Reflector Mage.

    Overperforming Cards;
Reflector Mage - This card is just bonkers. Tom Russell, the 27th place finishing Storm player at GP Birmingham, who plays at my LGS, and was I talking to throughout the weekend agrees. He is criminally underplayed. Crushes Thought Knot-Seers, Any Delve threat from Grixis DS, making it unplayable by them for the rest of the game, as they have delved their entire graveyard away to play this Gurmag Angler, cmc 7, and they only have 3 lands, and now it's just sitting there unplayable till it's far far too late! This rocks against any Aggro/Midrange deck. You want to see him every game against them. Plays so very well with Spell Queller/Unified Will as well! Allows for very smooth side boarding as well in match-ups where he is bad.

    Eidolon of Rhetoric
Lord this card was made for this deck. I cut down to 1 on the Friday to accommodate big mana Hate in the form of Unified will, which was fantastic all weekend, however when this card is on the board, you just feel like you cannot lose. CoCo/Queller just synergize with Eidolon SO heavily, every time I resolved him at the GP, I went on to win the game - and easily. If you queller their spell with eidolon out, if they remove queller, they cannot cast the spell again due to it being their second of the turn, so they must removed Eidolon and then queller - Eidolon having 4 health being so fantasic here! - Plus any removal aimed at Eidolon would usually be the target of the Queller in the first place, so you are very protected.

    Nissa, Steward of Elements
U/W Control, or any type really, loses the game the moment she resolves. We already have a good matchup against Control, but controlling your top decks and playing Knights/Voices for free each turn makes her crushing. She is fantastic to bring in against any midrange matchup where you famously get into large board stalls, say against Bant Eldrazi or Eldrazi Tron, she allows to just out value them, or just ults, allowing to end the game with one big swing.

    Dusk//Dawn
This is such an overlooked card! The fact is that this card is literally just on the spot win against Eldrazi Tron,Grixis DS, Bant Eldrazi or any midrange game. Every single creature Eldrazi Tron runs is 3 power or higher, and every creature bar snapcaster mage in Grixis DS, is 3 Power or higher.
Every single creature in our deck is 2 power, save Knight - which is absolutely fine, as you just tutor up and send more land to your graveyard so the following turn when you cast Dusk, and get your Knights back, they are even bigger.
We break the symmetry of this card so well in our deck, the only thing you have to be careful of is Gavony Township activations to put your Quellers/Reflectors/Voices/Qasali's over that 2 power mark, however, that is easily play-around-able (that ain't a word.) and this card is just so crushing in midrange boardstalls. I feel however that one is the right number, as drawing two of these in the same game feels redundant and can dilute Collected Company.

    Underperforming Cards;

    Courser of Kruphix
What. A. Dud. Holy hell Courser of Kruphix is bad in this meta! It is so so crap against Thought Knot Seers or Reality Smashers. Tasigurs or Gurmags. In my preparation for GP Birmingham, I was switching between Tireless Tracker and Courser for this slot mainboard, figuring that courser was more of a hedge against Aggro, Tracker, against Control, and decided I wanted to crush Aggro, however in reality, courser does not win you the game against burn even close to enough, and this slot should have been neither Courser or Tracker - It should have been another card I will talk about later, in how I feel Knightfall should be built, after experiencing it in a GP.

    Kitchen Finks
Meh. It was fine, but again, I just don't feel like it really does enough life gain work against burn. It is fine, but matches up poorly in the meta right now, and feels like it is only their due to it being our "best" life gain 3 drop available to us. It helped, but didn't stun, and sometimes disappointed.

    Scavenging Ooze
So. Scavenging ooze is a good card. but 3 maindeck was a mistake. It was my hedge against graveyard strategies, but I gotta say, resolving a Scavenging Ooze is just not enough against a good Dredge Player. It is just too slow. It has great utility and is almost never a bad topdeck, and I would not remove it from the deck, but I feel like cutting down on it would be tighter.

MATCHES; I'll try to recall important parts of each of the matches as best I can, but I had about 6 hours sleep over the three days, and so It's all fairly blurry, in an amazing fun whirr way Grin

    Day 1----------------
    Round 1 - Burn (2-0)
Game 1; Opponent Mulligans to 4. Great start to a GP! Easily crush him with a Reflector Mage turn 2 and Spell Quellers.

    In| +2 Negate +2 Finks +1 Blessed +1 Eidolon
    Out| -2 Knight -2 Voice -2 Retreat

Game 2; Turn two Eidolon, into Turn 3 Queller held so much synergy, as it locked out so much damage, and effectively, he cannot remove the eidolon so each Queller gained me 3/4 life. I had two, that and a knight managed to just close it on him before he could top deck enough damage to get through.

    Record 1-0

    Round 2 - Skred (2-1)

Skred is one of our worst matchups, our worse being Titanshift/Dredge/Skred. However one of the few things they cannot deal with is a large Knight of the Reliquary, as long as you can keep pushing her outside of how many mountains they have, you are ok! I knew that going in, and managed to fade skreds of 6/7 damage on my knights only just, and even then, everything else dies to angers/skreds/bolts. It's super tough, you just have to grind them out, and to know what to Queller/Counter. So Key. Also their main deck relic of progenitus's are a PAIN. You need a well timed Qasali. Stormbreath Dragon is scary (Blessed is our only out to him). Made some plays I'm super proud of this match.

In| +2 Stony Silence +2 Negate +1 Gaddock Teeg +2 Unified Will +1 Blessed Alliance
Out| -4 Path to Exile -4 Reflector Mage

    Record 2-0

    Round 3 - Living End (2-1)

The real balance/necessity of playing against Living End is two things - One, balancing creatures in your graveyard/your board via CoCos/Scavenging Ooze, and more importantly - two - Quellering their Living End cast off the cascade. They simply can't do anything if you have more than 2 Quellers in a game. As long as you just do that, you can't lose unless you are drawing awfully. I was on the play, took G1 and G3 by just Quellering the Living End, and lost game two on a mull to 5. Game 2, my starting 7 was Windswept, Ghost Quarter, Gavony, Qasali, Path, Negate, Finks. I mull'd. Which on reflection, I think was a mistake. It's close.

In| +2 Finks +2 Negate +2 Unified Will +1 Eidolon (didn't take notes here, so this is what I assume I did)
Out| -4 Reflector Mage -2 Retreat to Coralhelm -1 Courser

    Record 3-0

    Round 4 - Titan Shift (2-1) Playing on table 8 :p

Game 1; He had the play, and kept two angers in his starting hand by chance. Still was very close but this is our worst matchup.

In| +2 Negate +2 Unified Will +1 Gaddock Teeg +1 Eidolon of Rhetoric +2 Stony Silence
    Out| -4 Path to Exile -

Game 2; I had Spell Quellers and Knights along with a Gavony township that was just quick and disruptive enough to finish the game. He was on a mull to 6

Game 3; This was the closest game I've ever played, and actually the retreat combo bailed me out hard on the last turn it could, however I had played to it and baited removal so I had a knight that had just stuck around. He actually misplayed and angered, thinking it would kill my Knight but miscalculated the amount of land in my graveyard and so it didn't die. I got lucky here.

Record 4-0 (Getting excited at this point)

Round 5 - Grixis Death's Shadow (2-0) Came very close to being picked for coverage these next two rounds :p

I mulled to 6 both games and was on the draw to start, and still this was the easist match of my GP. Grixis DS just sucks against this deck, the way this is built. Queller and Reflector did so much work pulling me back into the game with insane tempo swings. Voice is such a good blocker and Nissa just crushes them. Brought her in game 2 and as soon as she is down they are in SUCH trouble if they can't hit her straight away.

    In| +1 Dusk//Dawn +1 Nissa +1 Blessed Alliance
    Out| -2 Retreat -1 Courser

    Record 5-0

    Round 6 - Eldrazi Tron (1-2)

OOOOH man this match... So I'm on a early mull to 6, and just draw the wrong half of my deck so hard. Usually this match-up is really good for us, like 55% at least good, but I had to have bad variance at some point, and man game 1 was that the case. He Chalice'd on 2, and I drew 4 2 drops in a row.

Game 2 Dusk//Dawn buries him. Dealt with a t2 TKS with a Queller. As it is supposed to be.

Game 3 Oh boy the variance again. He gets tron off a matter reshaper death trigger, I ghost quarters his tron, and he draws another tower off the top. I drew a hierarch and a birds. then finally a CoCo! ... and I hit one hierarch off it. GG.

I feel I didn't misplay this matchup, I just got hit by variance hard. 3 of the loses in the tournament I believe were just variance, but 3 of them, If I was a tighter player I could have definitely taken. This was a hard loss as this kept me out of the guarantee of day 2(my goal for my first GP) and the thoughts of 5-4 were in my head, I feel like I did a decent job to keep focus however.

    Record 5-1

    Round 7 - Affinity (2-1)

So Affinity, I feel like is a fine matchup for us, not insane, because it's affinity, and can sometimes just have those hands that nothing is going to stop.
Game 1 I mull to 6, keep a one lander, because it has a hierarch, path and reflector mage in hand, I weigh the odds of drawing land is good enough to justify not pushing to 5. She has a galvanic blast for my hierarch, and I don't draw another land for 3 turns. I'm dead.

    In| +2 Izzet Staticaster +2 Stony +2 Finks +1 Blessed +1 Negate
    Out| -3 Voice -2 Knight -2 Retreat -1 Ooze

Game 2 on the play, I had a mono Spell Queller hand. It's over very quickly.

Game 3 T2 Stony Silence, T3 Izzet Staticaster means I can hold it down, Ghirapur aether grid is a real card however, so it's a lot closer that I wanted it to be, but it's still comfortable.

Record 6-1 !!!!!!!!! I made day two!!!! I was so happy/tired at this point from trying to play so tight and focusing so hard trying to calculate odds all the day since 9 in the morning

    Round 8 - Dredge (0-2)

Ahh Dredge. He takes the play and nut draws and it's over by turn 3, really not much I could have done.
Game two I have a Scavenging ooze turn 2 and turn 3 I'm given the option to eat 3 times. Of the dredge targets I have to take out two stinkweed imps and a life from the loam, choosing not to take the conflagrate, as he didn't have the double red yet. But he hit it, and took out my scooze. I managed to block for a while but he just dredge'd so well. Really felt the lack of graveyard hate here. However, Dredge is just one of our worst matchups, I didn't expect to win it.

In| +2 Izzet Staticaster (SO GOOD at slowing dredge down, sends their entire bloodghast team back each turn, or their narcomoebas. Very Strong.) +1 Gaddock Teeg + 2 Negate
    Out| -1 Courser -2 Qasali -2 Voice

Record 6-2 As I'm a lock for day two and the loss was against a hugely weak matchup, I'm still feeling very good, but very tired.

    Round 9 - Eldrazi Tron (0-2)

    I lost this game.
    Not the deck.
I was fatigued at this point from not sleeping the night before. My focus was gone and I was just happy from making day two, and I made silly decisions as I had sort of written off the match before I sat down? It was super loose but I just kept a sketchy hand game one, and played FAR too quickly in both games. I know I could have been 7-2 after day one, but this match was a good experience for me playing in a proper tournament setting when you aren't feeling great.

Record 6-3, very happy I stumble back across Birmingham for an hour with my friends to our AirBnB.

    Day 2-----------------

    Round 10 - Burn (0-2)

I sit down and here, and game one he has the play and just burn nuts draws me out. Nothing much I could have done there, I'm not certain.
Game 2 I made an egregious misplay. I keep Forest, Fetch, Fetch, Knight, CoCo, Birds, Qasali. That's not the misplay.
I lead with T1 Forest into birds. Crap.
The misplay there is that if I go fetch birds fetch knight, it's a 4/4 out of bolt range, instead of dying to bolt turn 2, which it did, because I'm an idiot, and immediately took playing the forest out to minimise damage taken, when it wouldn't have made any more difference, and on excitement of seeing a good hand, played on reflex too quickly and was punished for it.

I then lose a close game. This was the second of the 3 matches I could have won, but lost due to my quick play.

    Record 6-4

    Round 11 - G/W Hatebears (1-2)

He has the play, T1 Hierarch, I T1 Hierarch and manages to turn 2 Arbiter ghost quarter me, and has ghost quarters the next turn as well. I have no removal as he moves into a Loxodon Smiter and just hits me in the head.

I can't remember my sideboard here as I didn't write it down.

Game 2 I take him out very quickly, as I turn 2 queller, and am able to tutor up a ghost quarter with my knight to take out his gavony, get my own gavony the next turn and push it into an uncontrollable board state for him even with his mirran crusaders out. I manage to crash through two turns later. Reflector mage does work against midrange decks.

Game 3, I have a really awkward 7, ship it, and see a dodgy 6. Keep. It was a mistake, I think a 5 would have been better, and he just has the most awkward hand, he has a gavony, three dorks, a coco, and land, so I get to the position where I have to hold up queller because I can feel he has the CoCo, but if I don't do something he just gavonys his dorks every endstep, and so I have to pull the gun and tap out for a knight, to which he can CoCo in response to and finds two mirran crusaders, which just buries me with gavony. Was a super close and fun game though!

    Record 6-5

    Round 12 - U/W Control (2-1)

We grind very very well against U/W Control. Game 1, I manage to play around his hand, eventually grinding down to both of us basically having no resources, however I have a kessig wolf run and gavony township out and each birds I topdeck can swing for 4-5 each turn. He has to waste removal and snapcasters to deal with it. Eventually I draw into a voice and that is enough to put me over the finish line with a kessig.

    In| +1 Eidolon +1 Nissa +1 Gaddock Teeg +2 Negate +1 Unified Will
    Out| -4 Path to Exile -2 Retreat

Game 2 He sticks a turn 3 Geist, I have an Eidolon, which can block the geist, but not the angel, I eventually get down to 7, but manage to play it so that his aven mindcensor flashed in on his end step isn't enough, by flashing a Queller, but he has the removal, and my ooze I topdeck isn't enough to keep me alive as I can only pull up to 3 life, not enough.

Game 3 Nissa + Eidolon + tight play makes this over.

    Record 7-5

    Round 13 - Jeskai Control (0-2)

Ooh man. So this is the third loss that I put down to variance. Why? I mull to 6 on the draw Game 1. See Fetch Fetch, Path Path, Birds Birds. Argue in my head that this is going to be a fine hand against any aggro/midrange match, scry to see a reflector, keep it on top in that line of thought. I see a celestial collonade t1 from him and sigh slightly, draw my reflector and play out my birds. Not a great start but I can grind right? Well. My next draw step is a path. I now have 3 dead paths. Right. Next draw step.... Another Path. I now have 4 paths in my hand and he is just land go. He has a counter/snapcaster/removal for everything I topdeck past that. Just gave him basically 4-5 free turns to set up because of my mull and draw.

    In| +1 Eidolon +1 Nissa +1 Gaddock Teeg +2 Negate +1 Unified Will
    Out| -4 Path to Exile -2 Retreat

Game 2, I mulled to 6. Didn't draw well. CoCo'd into just a Hierarch... managed play around his hand, played as tight as I could, to bring him down to next turn lethal, and he topdecks a lightning Helix to stay alive and win.

Record 7-6 Drop, I was pretty fatigued by this point, as I'd had two hours sleep the night before, and could only go 9-6, so just out of the pro point range, but! finished with a day 2 finish and overall positive record Smile I was super proud of some of the plays I made in the GP, I think I played really really tight, made some super slick plays, and played to my outs in all the games I won. I also made noticeable mistakes, but I think I'm aware of each of them, and I'm trying to learn from each of them.

I'm certain that I was close with this build, but there are a few pieces that need tuning and moving around. Knightfall is a beautiful and very under respected deck, and it's results in all it's different builds this week show it's power.

I actually tried the a build out on stream last night and 4-1'd a competitive league, beating Eldrazi Tron, Abzan, Titanshift and Bogles, losing once to Titanshift in a close match Grin If you'd like to watch me breakdown Knightfall a bit more and try out the new build, here is the VoD https://www.twitch.tv/videos/166987280 I'm also going to be streaming competitive modern leagues, 4 times a week on the channel and have only just started streaming, so it would be awesome if you could check it out Grin

    Thank you for reading!

So going to be streaming in just under an hour and a half at https://www.twitch.tv/knightsandfish talking about my day 2 finish with Knightfall at GP Birmingham and playing a competitive league of magic, although probably merfolk tonight, new Knightfall build on Wednesday Grin

I'm certain Knightfall rocks this meta if built correctly, and I'll be posting a massive tournament report tomorrow here for the GP talking about it. And actually from my LGS and a friend of mine Tom Russell made top 32 on storm, and I've a LOT to say on building Knightfall now, I think a lot has changed Grin

In short tho I think I brought 71/75 of the correct cards to the GP. Will discuss more on stream tonight and when I have the energy to type that much tomorrow!

Edit; New Knightfall build tonight Grin VoDs will be available Grin

Hopefully going live in a little while, for sure with VODs this time :D, streaming a competitive league of Knightfall, which I'm taking to GP Birmingham over this weekend, so if you want, you can come check it out Grin

    https://www.twitch.tv/knightsandfish

Edit/Spoiler; Went 3-2 in the competitive league, really should've been a 4-1 for the last round, played far too fast.

The VOD is up so if you want to watch please do, there are some hiccups as we've just started but hopefully there's gonna be at least two Knightfall competitive leagues every week on our stream now Grin

I also talk for like 40 minutes about sideboarding choices at the end of the stream if anyone is interested!

So this is a bit of self promotion, and I hope that's ok, if not I apologize - I'm not certain of forum rules.

Me and my best friend who is part of my testing team have decided to start a stream, https://www.twitch.tv/knightsandfish Smile

Where we're going to play competitive modern leagues on MTGO four times a week(Sat/Mon/Wed/Thur), playing Knightfall and Merfolk - our two respective decks, testing builds both in preparation for GP Birmingham in a week and to generally get better as players - and try to start putting some 5-0's back on the board for Knightfall/Merfolk Grin

We're planning our first stream tonight at 7pm GMT / 4pm EST/ Midday PST (Basically in 7 1/2 hours from now) and the vods will be available if anyone wants to check it out Grin

@RPD In terms of now dusk//dawn performs and gaddock teeg, I'm certain of dusk from team testing and hopefully tonight on stream I'll be using them both a lot.

So yeah, I hope if you'd like you can come check us out Grin

    @ Divbalari

    1) Geist is a win more card. He is not fast enough to kill storm, even with him out turn two. Nor really is he fast enough for Ad Nauseum. R/G Valakut doesn't really care either cause they can block with sakura's and sac. so it's basically only 4 a turn, along with the fact they have sweepers - so it doesn't help with combo, not even mentioning elves or Counter's Company. Control we already slaughter if you know what you are doing. He isn't great against eldrazi tron - and having him or not having him doesn't stop all is dust - yes it's good against turn 3 Karn, but if they even tick up you can't even kill him...

    2) Witness is a slow value card - with weak stats. - yes it's great to chain into a CoCo, but you gotta play tight with this deck against the meta right now, and taking a turn off to not present a crazy threat isn't great. But It's definitely a great card - No one would berate you for playing 1 of in the deck for sure.

    3) I played 2 Mirran in my sideboard for the last month - you can check my report from my Folkestone tournament a few pages back - I talk about him there. It's a meta call to run him for sure. I've switched him out for 2 Dusk//Dawn because that card is HARD ridiculous.

    4) Courser isn't just there for aggro, although yes he is a card you want to see 10 times out of 10 against humans or burn or whatever. It's that he is SO efficient at ripping lands off the top against control/midrange - its subtle but that filtering and advantage over more than even 2 turns is just SO strong.

4 Reflector main is where I'm at and every day I do not regret that decision - It also makes side boarding really really nice and simple - against things like ad nauseum, I have 8 instant cuts. So clean.
