Though a lot appears to be stitched together, the cited sources are going to be a huge help for me. I already possess "the Dragons of Magic" and will see what else I can pull from it as soon as I finish reading "The Thran". Is there any resource I can look to for information on the battle of Nicole Bolas and the behemoth that became the talon gate?
But thanks to everyone for what you have posted to help me thus far!!
I am working on making a youtube series about the mythos/storyline of Magic. I plan to take a couple years to cover up to, what will be, the current events. I plan to start Chronologically and follow by storyline of individual characters/groups up till whatever events kill/divide/change them.
I have all of the comics (minus Serra Angel, that's way too pricy for a comic book) and am working on getting all of the novels and Duelist Magazine as well.
My first episode will be about the Dragon Wars but I'm having a hard time tracking down any information on them in published or posted information by Wizards or Acclaim. I found some basic information from the Dragon Wars comic but that appears more to cover the conflicts of the dragons well after the Dragon Wars took place. Understanding most if not all of it is Pre-revisionist and thereby not always cannon unless verified by WOTC, what are going to be my best resources to study to verify I put forth an accurate representation?
A spell cast for its bestow cost will be an Aura enchantment spell. It can be countered by Annul, but not Essence Scatter.
A spell with bestow cast for its normal mana cost will be an enchantment creature spell and can be countered by both Annul and Essence Scatter.
It is important to note that if the creature it's targeting is removed it won't become a creature spell until it resolves, too late to counter. If it is cast for its bestow cost it CANNOT be countered by Essence Scatter/Remove Soul regardless of what happens to its target. This is meant to counter anything you said, just to expand upon it :).
Here's how he does it. At least from what I know and from following him lol.
This looked so cool I had to try it myself. My result didn't look nearly as good but was a good start. I didn't use anything playable as I didn't want to destroy the cards it in case I failed and most of my cards are packed up for a move. I'm looking forward to having an actual desk and exacto knife to try this again.
Players (usually) do not receive priority during the untap step. The earliest you would be able to cast Gather Specimens is in response to the trigger. The rest of this is correct.
small correction, they NEVER receive priority during the untap step. If anything triggers during that step it waits till the Upkeep step to be put on the stack and the active player puts all triggers (upkeep and uptap) on the stack in the order they choose then following in APNAP order.
On the battlefield it isn't a card, it's a permanent. You can't cast permanents, only cards.
This is incorrect:
110.1. A permanent is a card or token on the battlefield. A permanent remains on the battlefield indefinitely. A card or token becomes a permanent as it enters the battlefield and it stops being a permanent as it’s moved to another zone by an effect or rule.
This rule defines a permanent but doesn't state it stops being a card. There is nothing in the rules that I've read the will inherently prevent you from casting a permanent from the battlefield if something else says you can. BUT something MUST say you can cast that permanent/card in order for you to do so and there's currently no way to do that that I know of (it's a mechanic I've been wanting to try in a set I'm thinking up )
Plays nicely with a lot of things in legacy but with how tight the decks it fits in are I don't know if it'll make its way in. In Modern 8Rack may want to play but I wonder if there's an archetype yet to come featuring cards like Underworld Dreams and/or Reforge the Soul/Wheel of Fate.
So Obzedat, the Ghost Council can return from the command zone if the commander rule is used to replace its ability exiling itself with moving to the command zone, but this doesn't work? That seems counterintuitive. Does it matter if the ability is the card's own ability or granted by another card?
Yes it can return. What you can watch out for is the wording on the card. Here the Obzedat is sent to the Command zone instead of Exile but the same ability that sent it away created a static ability to 'return' it to the BF. That ability doesn't care if it's from Exile or Command. The Rector is in the graveyard with an ability on the stack looking for it there. If the rector is moved to another zone while this ability is on the stack it won't be able to find it as it becomes a new object. The closest association these two can have is if you Path to Exile the Obzedat with his ability on the stack, when the ability resolves it won't find him and then won't do anything and he won't return when his follow-up ability Would have been placed on the stack.
edit: triple nath'd
I don't dispute the steps to cast a spell. My issue is that Aurelia's Fury states if the player was dealt damage they can't cast non-creature spells that turn. As I stated a spell isn't cast until all of it's steps are completed, the last step is costs being paid.
Since the spell does not become cast until the final step after costs have been paid, and the player can not comply with that (due to aurelia's fury stating non-creature spells can not be cast), the casting of the spell is illegal.
But the card is changed to a non-creature spell prior to the completion of casting it through a static replacement effect (bolding done by me),
Edit: lol, if I read a little more I might have noticed that's what you said
702.102a Bestow represents two static abilities, one that functions while the card with bestow is on the stack and another that functions both while it’s on stack and while it’s on the battlefield. “Bestow [cost]” means “You may cast this card by paying [cost] rather than its mana cost.” and “Ifyou chose to pay this spell’s bestow cost, it becomes an Aura enchantment and gains enchant creature. These effects last until one of two things happens: this spell has an illegal target as it resolves and or the permanent this spell becomes, becomes unattached.” Paying a card’s bestow cost follows the rules for paying alternative costs in rules 601.2b and 601.2e–g.
In relation to being that 'evil' magic player. I would at the very least be tempted to go for an Unsportsmanlike Conduct - minor, or Player Communication error. If it persists I'd be thinking a Fraud penalty may be merited.
One more side note. If you cast a creature for it's Bestow cost targeting one of your creature, I remove that creature with a kill spell I can NOT cast Essence Scatter to counter the Bestow card. A card cast for its bestow cost will not stop being an aura (non-creature) until the spell goes to resolve and sees no legal target. At that time and that time only will it become a creature spell on the stack but because it's during the resolution your opponent won't get the opportunity to Scatter it, though Negate will work whether the target is legal or not.
What happens when you mix Innistrad with Theros? Steven the Lycanthropic Centaur! Anyone else wonder what Chris Hastings is on when he comes up with this stuff or why he doesn't share it?
I like the siren but as a first pick I'd go for the Divine Verdict. Three points push me towards this:
1. Removal in this set is hard to come by so this probably won't table (with good players).
2. White is one of the best colors in the set so having that available sets you up for it
3. If the other cards and packs push you into another color you can easily splash
The singer was my second choice but makes you heavily committed to U/B and third choice Minotaur is heavy red.
Lands will say if they are a basic subtype, see Blood Crypt and Badlands as an example. Because the Hovel doesn't say it's a swamp it doesn't count as one. If it were a swamp it wouldn't have included the line that it can tap for black mana. Murmuring Bosk is an example of a land with mana abilities that aren't related to its type but it can still tap for green
Seems like we're getting hero cards named the protector, the philosopher, The avenger, the warrior, and the hunter. None of these cards seem to have a mana cost, So I'm guessing these are some type of tokens that the gods will put into play.
A little different, the Gameday will use them in a similar way to Vanguard. We haven't gotten the Details yet but they should come soon.
If "A player" control a Vizzerdrix then "B player" gain control of it via sorcery, then "C player gain control of it" via sorcery and then "D player" gain control of it with a sower of temptation, and Sower leaves the battlefield... who gain control of the poor Vizzerdix? the owner or "C player" ?
(This really happens but with a Jin-Gitaxias and 6 players, no one discards his hand and everyone draws 7 cards xD)
The most recent control changing effect that still applies will work, in this case that would most likely be "C Player"
If "C Player" used a Act of Treason to gain control, "D Player" used an instant speed effect to gain control of the Vizzerdrix on "C Player"'s turn before the Treason wore off it would still end at the end of the turn. Then if the effect giving "D Player" the creature ended it would pass to "B Player" as they are the one with a still active effect.
Think of the control changing like a pile. Each time it changes control the effect is put on top of whatever control setting effects are already there and only the most recent applies. All of the effects that are 'time sensitive' like Act of Treason will still wear off in time even if they have no notable change to the board state. If the current control setting effect ends the next one down applies to the permanent with the bottom being which player the permanent entered the battlefield under the control of.
