I don't know if it's been tested, but what about a Grixis build?

Maybe beating around the bush to trigger Vengvine isn't the best way to go about it.. But rather focus on the current B/R meta build, and splash in blue for Stubborn Denial and Izzet Charm? Maybe even a card like Staticaster? I feel for the Charm and Denial though. Charm is versatile (especially against GY hate maybe?)

    Something like this maybe:

Here it is... yet another iteration of a Torpor Orb deck!

    Why?
Because I can. And because I have a strong feeling it's possible.

    Where have others gone wrong?
Trying to go for over-costed cards like Eater of Days, Hushwing Gryff, Dust Elemental and Inverter of Truth.

Or maybe just not using the correct cheap spells that can help the deck survive the first few turns in order to play it's threats later.

    What is different now?
Cheap spells. And cheap spells. Oh, and man-lands. And did I mention cheap spells?

Fatal Push, Serum Visions, Path to Exile, Collective Brutality. All wonderful modern staples that can be the heart of midrange.

    Oh, midrange?

Yep. Midrange. Maybe control if you feel like it.

How does the deck not work? Aggro. Sure, you have a wonderfully cheap and powerful creature called Hunted Horror, but man is it hard to bring him out turn 3. Torpor Orb and Tocatli Honor Guard are so susceptible to removal. The honor guard mostly.

    Without further ado, the deck:

I have come and gone about adding more removal, or less removal, or whatever. But I think that where it is is nice. I also have some doubt about the double generation lands.. But alas, I need to test this.

Now I'm going to explain some of the card choices I made, which may seem a little strange.

    Card choices

Ratchet bomb 2 An artifact that is usually a good sideboard options on its own for decks like Tron. Here, it doubles as removal for tokens. Can come down on a turn, and then be sac'd for free if one of our payoff cards happen to come in without an orb.

Collective Brutality 1B We have a ton of redundancy in the deck. Sometimes they can be dead draws. Brutality helps us get rid of redundancy for value (especially with extra lands). Also helps with Tasigur, detailed below

Tasigur, the Golden Fang 5B Great way to give our graveyard some value. Escalates well with Collective Brutality, our fetch lands and our midrange game in general.

Thoughts and suggestions are always welcome. I've also thought quite a bit about different possibilities and color combinations. I'll go into it later when I have a bit more time, but I would still like feedback Smile

    Holy cow that's brave.

We already have a rather nice MU vs control. The exception to this is Jeskai. Jeskai just.. it's not even fair lol.

So I guess if you're facing a lot of midrange (thank you BBE for this wonderful shift..), then it's a defendable stance for sure

Both very great answers, thank you!

I do enjoy the math of things very much, to be honest. So I'll be sure to read those articles tomorrow when I get a chance.

And you both went in a very similar direction talking about fastlands.. And the double cost thing was also very relevant, as the brew I'm making actually plays two colors in double intensity quite a lot, so bringing in the filter lands for those two colors could actually probably help a ton.

And what you said about the courser is also very true. Courser is a great card when you draw a land and play a land from your library, because it saves you a turn where you would've drawn two lands in a row.

    Hi there.

I'm relatively new to posting here, but I had a burning question and wanted to know what people thought (also, if this is not the forum for this, I apologize and please move the thread Smile )

So, the title is pretty self explanatory. A few burning questions I have:

    • How do you know how many total lands to run?
    • How do you know how many mana producing lands to run (ie, fetchlands vs all other lands)?
    • How do you determine the ratio of check/shock/fast/man/basic?

Just wondering if anyone has delved a bit into to this to study the maths of it all lol

I've always liked Spellskite. I think that if you play Thoughtcast (I haven't played affinity in quite a while, so I don't know if it runs TC, GB or both), you can side it out for a Spellskite. I think that in a match up where kite is good, it does what a TC would do - buy you time, get you creatures - but is an artifact, and saves whatever creature you want on board.

Also, I think Bogles is making a rise, and kite is bonkers good against auras (I've also seen more infect lately, and doing rather well [except against jund of course lol])

As an ex affinity player, I can tell you that Overseer and Skirge are the best cards vs Burn. Going wide (plus ticking up manlands) is very hard to deal with. I would lose (as affinity) whenever all my creatures got taken out, and I kept getting hit in the face by creatures.

In some match ups, spire is better. In others, glimmervoid is. I think it's more of a meta call. More burn decks = less spires, for example I believe. So putting a little bit of both seems like a good idea

How oh how are we supposed to play against jeskai decks? Ingot absolutely murdered by a nahiti harbinger deck yesterday. Everything I played was either electrolyzed, bolted, pathed or countered

And what's the best way to side for the mirror?

Hey guys. So,I read this thread sometimes, and as I will play GP Sao Paulo in a few weeks and Affinity is my go-to modern deck,I decided to create an account in order to ask yours opinions on some subjects.

1- Is Tempered Steel version consisent ? It has been working a lot with 3 in maindeck, replacing Inkmoth Nexus with more Spire of Industry/Glimmervoid and making some small changes, like adding more Memnites and 3 Ethed Champion MD,but I dont think i´ve played enough to confirm ,so it would be nice to know if anyone has been trying this version.

2- Is the Grixis Death Shadow match hard? Some people says it´s really hard, some say it´s good.

3- What is better nowadays,Dredge or Affinity ? Im considering to play Dredge because it seems better positioned, but have much more experience with Affinity

    1. I have no clue about this lol. Personally, I feel like it may be a little slow, and taking out the inkmoths takes out the possbility of winning via infect which doesn't sound too good to me

    2. It's actually an all-around even match up. I feel like game 1 we are favored because they don't have enough removal to keep up with everything, and their discard spells are pretty much useless after our turn 2/3. Post board they usually side in Stony Silence (those that splash white, which most usually do) and/or Lingering Souls. But I still feel it's a good match up for us, because we can swing for large amounts of damage with plating and ravager

    3. Well, there's a lot of graveyard hate in the meta because of Grixis DS, so there is naturally going to be a lot of hate against dredge I feel

I am super interested in the Hazoret variant, and would love to give it a whirl this saturday. If anyone tries it out this Friday can they give some feedback as to how it went?

    Well let's assume these scenarios:

    - I'm on the play game 1
    - I'm on the draw game 2 and I think they could have it
    - I'm on the draw game 2 and don't think they could have it
    - I'm on the play game 2 and think they could have it
    - I'm on the play game 2 and don't think theu could have it

As you can see, I'm looling for the general guidelines of having multiple options available, and when I should go for which
