@zero I can relate to when you played in tempest. Power creep has greatly increased the efficiency of creatures and spells. Parfait as deck was essentially creatureless in the beginning, and now you can have a similar deck where creatures do the parfait effects. That is a very light gloss over however.
@truth: cavern of souls beats a chalice of the void. Your responses make more sense to me now.

Both U and UB Spirits are one reason why I am not playing Pioneer right now. Far too consistent a tribe chasing all the other tribes I may be interested in out of competitive play.
Again not your fault of course. Well played. -

Balsamify posted a message on Pauper discord ?I understand your issue, but I hope that pauper doesn't die because it remains one of my favorite formats. What you are saying is true and very eyeopening to me as a netdecker. Recently i started playing a deck that I got right from the builder. We discussed card choices and now I understand the deck in more detail than any netdeck I ever have done, down to simply glancing at my graveyard and immediately knowing what remains in my deck, (why is it always lands ).: ) but I think deeper dives into how deckbuilding wizards do it could benefit every player as it has me.Posted in: Pauper - To post a comment, please login or register a new account.

And do not underestimate how powerful tempo'd a 0 mana Gut Shot is on most turn 1 mana dorks! More ppl should be running Gut Shot, as least in the 'board. Love that card, fits every deck!
In game 1 vs Boggles, I "attached" a Bound in Silence onto a heavily aura'd, hexproof creature by fetching it via rebel searcher. For those who don't know, "attaching" is technically different from "targeting" (attaching is a confusing, unintuitive loophole in the rules.) It was in game 2 where my Patrician's Scorn completely wiped his board.
I used to main Ramosian Sergeant but found the tempo loss was too great. I prefer a consistent 2-drop searcher on turn 2 (I have 12 searchers.) Then turn 3, hardcast Zealot il-Vec (begin the control game) or remove an early threat (Unmake/Bound in Silence) or even play Aven Riftwatcher on defense, rather than using my 1 drop Ramosian Sergeant to fetch my 2 drop searchers (who can't block, obviously) on turn 3. Gotta stabilize ASAP b/c early aggression is this deck's only real downfall (the other downfall is not reaching 4 mana - run 26 lands, not 24.) Rebels tend to win the long game.
1
8 players, 3 rounds, 3-0 matches, 6-2 games, 1st place
4 Amrou Scout
4 Aven Riftwatcher
4 Bound in Silence
4 Defiant Falcon
4 Ramosian Lieutenant
4 Zealot il-Vec
1 Nightwind Glider
1 Thermal Glider
4 Gut Shot
4 Unmake
(26) Lands:
18 Plains
4 Cave of Temptation (cast Gut Shot )
4 Idyllic Grange
4 Lone Missionary (vs RDW)
4 Patrician's Scorn (vs Boggles)
4 Ramosian Sergeant (vs Counterspells)
3 Erase (excessive, I know)
Notes: I have a higher land count b/c I absolutely need to hit 4 mana for the deck to work.
Test vs Elves, 3-1-1.
No SB
Round 1 vs RDW: 1-0 match, 2-1 games.
SB: +4 Lone Missionary, -4 Gut Shot.
Game 1, he burned me out quick.
Games 2 & 3, I resolved a single Lone Missionary early on, then searched out multiple Aven Riftwatcher to stay healthy.
Round 2 vs Boggles: 1-0 match, 2-0 games.
SB: +4 Patrician's Scorn, +2 Erase. -4 Gut Shot, -1 Nightwind Glider, -1 Thermal Glider.
My aura hate was too strong.
After the match, he recommended SB cards to replace Erase:
-Dust to Dust (Affinity.)
-Holy Light (Elves.)
-Dawnbringer Cleric (flex slot.)
Round 3 vs Mono White Heroic: 1-0 match, 2-1 games.
SB: +4 Patrician's Scorn, +2 Erase. -4 Gut Shot, -1 Nightwind Glider, -1 Thermal Glider.
Game 1 was controversial. He casted Benevolent Blessing naming "white." In response, I searched out Bound in Silence. This play was legal but both of us missed that Benevolent Blessing removes my Bound in Silence since it isn't his aura. My round 2 opponent informed us of this at the start of game 3.
Game 2 he was just too fast.
Game 3 I Bound in Silence his biggest creature but didn't dare attack into it via Amrou Scout on 3 land. I feared instant speed Bound in Silence removal and an untimely block for my searcher. I don't race anyway, I only stabilize so this plan was just fine. I eventually got my rebel chain going while he failed to produce more creatures so I won.
Conclusion: I can't believe my last update to his deck was Dec 24, 2020! I think I'll listen to my round 2 opponent and SB +3 Dust to Dust, -3 Erase.

During Masques Block Constructed (MBC,) "Counter-Rebels" was a legit deck. Leaving counter spell mana open, then searching during their end step is powerful synergy.
That being said, Brainstorm and Ponder are auto-includes. Since the cantrips are 1 drops, adjustments must be made to favor blue mana. Ramosian Sergeant must be cut since you can't Brainstorm/Ponder AND Ramosian Sergeant on the first turn... doing so will destroy your mana consistency. And since we are now blue heavy, 4 copies of actual Counterspell seem a perfect fit.
My first draft:
8 Island
4 Ash Barrens (fix mana + shuffle)
4 Plains
4 Tranquil Cove
4 Brainstorm (4 cantrips = 2 land)
4 Ponder (4 cantrips = 2 land)
(20) Rebels:
4 Aven Riftwatcher
4 Bound in Silence
4 Defiant Falcon
4 Ramosian Lieutenant
4 Zealot il-Vec
4 Counterspell
4 Guardian of the Guildpact
4 Journey to Nowhere
4 Gut Shot
4 Relic of Progenitus
4 Patriarch's Scorn
1 Amrou Scout
1 Nightwind Glider
1 Thermal Glider

8 players, 3-0 matches, 1st place.
4 Faerie Miscreant
4 Ninja of the Deep Hours (deck name)
4 Omenspeaker (gains value off ninjitsu, never whiffs unlike Augur of Bolas.)
4 Spellstutter Sprite
2 Spire Golem (always 4+ islands so you have 2+ mana open)
(24) Spells:
4 Counterspell
4 Gush (banned 5/24/19)
4 Mutagenic Growth (force ninjas thru)
4 Ponder
4 Preordain
4 Snap
18 Island
4 Gut Shot (elves)
4 Relic of Progenitus (recur)
4 Spreading eas (tron)
1 Echoing Truth (catch all)
1 Blue Elemental Blast
1 Hydroblast
I replaced Delver of Secrets w/Omenspeakers. I hate Delver of Secrets, it's inconsistent unless paired w/a Brainstorm. But for the decks that run Evolving Wilds/Terramorphic Expanse, I understand that Brainstorm adds a lot of synergy.
My game plan is "Forbidian" by forcing ninjas in. The Mutagenic Growths give me a 0 cost way to remove blockers.
test vs standard MonoR 3-2.
no SB allowed.
Lost first 2, won the last 3. Learned the match up.
r1 vs UGtron, 2-1.
SB +4 Spreading Seas. -4 Omenspeaker (Sea Gate Oracle/Mnemonic Wall blockers.)
g2 his Ghostly Flicker removed 2 Spreading Seas from his 2 Urza's Towers. He assembled tron and won.
g1 and g3 he didn't assemble tron and lost.
r2 vs UBdelver, 2-1.
SB +1 Echoing Truth (for flipped Delver of Secrets and Gurmag Anglers), -1 Omenspeaker.
He splashed black and ran Gush, Daze and Foil.
r3 vs AcidTrip, 2-0.
SB +1 Echoing Truth (fizzle Reality Acid), -1 Omenspeaker.
If you allow no value off Reality Acid, the synergy cards are weak.
I used Mutagenic Growth vs his Quicksands.
10/15/19 Update:
4 Faerie Miscreant
4 Faerie Seer (Omenspeaker replacement)
4 Fathom Seer (Gush replacement)
4 Ninja of the Deep Hours
4 Spellstutter Sprite
2 Spire Golem
4 Counterspell
4 Mutagenic Growth
4 Ponder
4 Preordain
4 Snap
(18) Land:
18 Island
4 Gut Shot
4 Relic of Progenitus
3 Blue Elemental Blast
3 Hydroblast
1 Echoing Truth

12 players, 3-1, 1st place
Tourney Rules:
The Tribal Wars event will use the following rules:
The banned list found here: https://mtg.gamepedia.com/Tribal_Wars
As well as any card currently banned in the modern format
Merfolk Tribe:
4 Benthic Biomancer
4 Lord of Atlantis
4 Master of the Pearl Trident
4 Merfolk Trickster
4 Silvergil Adept
4 True-Name Nemesis
(16) Other:
4 Ancestral Visions
4 Brainstorm
4 Liliana, of the Veil *
4 Witch’s Vengeance
4 Flooded Strand
4 Island
4 Misty Rainforest
4 Scalding Tarn
4 Underground Sea
4 Harbinger of the Tides (vs mirror, -4 Lord of Atlantis)
4 Phantasmal Image (vs mirror, -4 Witch's Vengeance)
3 Leyline of the Void
3 Null Rod
1 Spreading Seas (4th Leyline/Rod)
*Lily and Aether Vial nonbo so I chose Lily over Vial.
Test vs R/g Satyr, 0-1.
Satyrs are pretty limited in selection. I'm surprised he could jam the 20 minimum into his deck!
I was winning but then our TO announced registration... My test partner wouldn't budge so I just scooped.
Round 1 vs B Zombies, 2-0.
SB: +3 Leyline of the Void, +1 Spreading Seas. -4 Ancestral Visions.
In game 1, I saw graveyard recursion. Leylines arrived too late in game 2 to make a difference.
Round 2 vs B/w Knights, 2-0.
SB: none
He didn't like my True-Name Nemesis (held off his army) or my Underground Seas (too expensive.)
Round 3 vs (Dason Lee) B/w Vampires, 1-2.
SB: none
I named this opponent b/c of all 4 black decks I've faced tonight, Dason was the smartest since he also ran 4 Witch's Vengeance. Kudos!
He seemed to think Ancestral Visions was broken. I disagree since it left modern's ban list. I would run Ponder instead, if I could, *shrugs*
Even though I lost, I felt my deck was more consistent due to all the card draw (Ancestral Visions, Benthic Biomancer, Brainstorm, Silvergil Adept.)
Round 4 vs B/w Vampires, 2-0.
SB: none
Post match, I gave him budget card advice, such as:
-add 4 Evolving Wilds, 4 Terramorphic Expanse, 1 Plains. His deck only had 4 Godless Shrine to cast his 4 white cards.
-add 4 Sign in Blood. It's a cheap cantrip that can trim 1-2 lands from your build. His deck also gains life.
After round 4, there were no undefeated players. There were four 3-1's.
-1st tiebreaker criteria: we all defeated each another so we all had no superior opponents.
-2nd tiebreaker criteria: I finished w/a game record of 7-2.
Since I had the best game record of the 3-1's, I got the nod into 1st place.

Brew something? It shouldn't have to be tier 1 for you to have fun...
1
10 island
4 cavern of souls
4 mutavault
1 minamo
1 oboro
(20) creatures:
4 cursecatcher
4 harbinger of the tides
4 lord of atlantis
4 master of the pearl trident
4 silvergil adept
4 aether vial
4 chalice of the void
4 echoing truth
4 smuggler's copter
4 spreading seas
4 ceremonial rejection
4 gut shot
4 tidebender mage
3 ravenous trap
notes:
chalice of the void was for my meta (affinity, boggles, infect-rich.)
4 cavern of souls helps under my own chalice.
echoing truth was a tempo catch all. i felt dismember was too painful last week (went 1-3.)
smugglers copters replaced the phantasmal images i used last week. i like the looting and evasion. never blocked fliers tho.
i got the idea of only 1-2 drops from an old list posted here a few months back. i like being able to copter away excess (3+) lands.
ravenous trap is experimental hate vs storm as i've gotten relic of progentius shattering spree'd before them going off.
r1 vs tron:
2-1
SB +4 ceremonial rejection, -4 chalice of the void
r2 vs tron:
1-2
SB +4 ceremonial rejection, -4 chalice of the void
r3 vs boggles:
2-1
SB none
notes:
game 3, boggles went: turn 1 forest fetch - Dryad Arbor.
i went turn 1 island, cursecatcher.
he went turn 2, plains, tap arbor, Rancor and white umbra.
i went turn 2, chalice for 1.
he went turn 3, land, 2-drop aura, swing.
i went turn 3, spreading seas on arbor, he auras fell off... he scooped.
r4 vs affinity:
2-0
SB +4 ceremonial rejection, -4 chalice of the void
notes:
game 1, i won the die roll and dropped chalice on 0. i won.
game 2, i switched out the chalices for rejections since it's pointless to plan on chalice for 0 going second.
afterword:
if anyone likes my build, when siding, you need the minimum of 20 creatures, regardless of match up. adepts and copters need bodies.
my only loss was to tron (which i beat as well.) i honestly can't think of what to change for next week.
1
main - same as #10042.
side - 4 chalice of the void, 4 gut shot, 4 deprive, 3 ravenous trap.
*i really want to alpha strike into a U/W control deck, than Deprive-save a manland attacker from his Settle the Wreckage (assuming my Deprive gets countered.)
2-0 vs U/R Kiln Fiend.
SB - none.
Aether Vial (on 2) Harbinger bounced his flipped Delver and traded w/his Kiln Fiend.
Truth/Harbinger bounce on his pumped up creatures really was unfair for him.
2-0 vs Mardu Vampires.
SB - none.
8 Seas package really messed his mana up. he died one game holding 3 Vampire Nocturnus.
