Oct 31, 2011FuneralofGod posted a message on RDWNice list! How has Manabarbs been working for you? It's a card I haven't used yet myself, but I feel like it could be great against Wolf Run Ramp.Posted in: Crusible Blog

Oct 28, 2011FuneralofGod posted a message on Meta HateYour mana curve is WAY too high to be running only 20 lands.. You need at least 23 maybe even 24.Posted in: Prophet's Decks
I think you could probably cut 1 RSZ, 1 GSZ, and 1 Surgical Extraction and add in 3 Copperline Gorge. Those are all good cards, but 3 is enough for each of them..and that extra land is more important. -
Oct 28, 2011FuneralofGod posted a message on "Junk" Birthing PodMy sideboard plan against Solar Flare would look like this:Posted in: FuneralofGod Blog
-1 Elesh Norn
-1 Grave Titan
+1 Acidic Slime
+1 Archon of Justice
-1 Solemn Simulacrum
+1 Thrun, the Last Troll
-1 Blade Splicer
+1 Mirran Crusader
I don't want to bring in both Crusaders because I like that Splicer gives a token, that way I'm not as vulnerable to Liliana. The Norn and the Titan aren't really needed against flare, as I should be able to win without that extra aggression. Also, the extra Slime and Archon really do a number on their lands. -
Oct 20, 2011FuneralofGod posted a message on "Junk" Birthing PodThe lack of dorks forces me to play a midrange style, which is why included a couple extra solemns. It's not as important for me to hit 3 mana on turn 2 as it is for me to hit 5/6 mana on turn 5.Posted in: FuneralofGod Blog
No dorks also gives me more room in the 2-drop slot for other creatures. Spellskites really shine, since they protect your pod and other threats. -
Oct 20, 2011FuneralofGod posted a message on [Standard] Naya PodI like the Noxious Revival tech! It's like a pseudo-Unburial Rites..Posted in: Self Medicated's Pharmacy
How was naya been working out for you? I had issues with Hero of Bladehold when trying out naya, how is it for you? -
Oct 20, 2011FuneralofGod posted a message on RUG ControlYeah I think Solemn in place of Satchel is probably a good call. And I'll try a maindeck Frost Titan in place of the Sphinx, but still keep the second Frosty in the sideboard for the matches where you really want it. Thanks for the advice. I'll try these changes and put the results up here.Posted in: FuneralofGod Blog

Oct 19, 2011FuneralofGod posted a message on Red Deck SucceedsSpellskites are there strictly to protect my other threats. And I've definitely killed people a few times with a 5/4 trampling Spellskite (or bigger even). The Mayor is in the deck specifically because my meta is full of control. I side it out in certain match-ups, but that doesn't happen often. His synergy with Waif and Hero is also really nice. I've been thinking of demoting RSZ to the sideboard in place of maindeck Traitorous Blood, since it seems all-around pretty useful. IDK though.. I like being able to exile things. It's really useful against Viridian Emissary and the like.. Some people suggest Devil's Play instead, but like you said; I don't have any ramp really so I don't feel D-Play is a realistic option for me.Posted in: FuneralofGod Blog

Oct 18, 2011FuneralofGod posted a message on Mono Black ControlYeah I was thinking about that actually. Not sure what to take out though.. any suggestions?Posted in: FuneralofGod Blog

Oct 18, 2011FuneralofGod posted a message on "Junk" Birthing PodNot really enough recursion targets for Sun Titan. Sure there are 12 cards in the deck that could be recalled, but Blade Splicer is the only important one. If I was running Oblivion Ring, I would probably use Sun Titan. Also, for my finishers I would prefer something that gets the job done faster, hence Grave Titan > Elesh Norn.Posted in: FuneralofGod Blog

Oct 17, 2011FuneralofGod posted a message on JunkyardMoldgraf is a great idea! I think I'll use that instead of Wurmcoil Engine. Or do you think I should replace a Grave Titan instead?Posted in: FuneralofGod Blog
If I included blue it would probably be for Phantasmal Image, not the Assistant.. -
Oct 17, 2011FuneralofGod posted a message on INN Block Constructed v. 2The deck is hardly destabilized.. I have only 4 off-color lands and 3 off-color cards. Other than that it's a 2-color deck.Posted in: FuneralofGod Blog

Oct 17, 2011FuneralofGod posted a message on Going to try Wolf Run RDWI've been trying some new things because most of the pod builds I've tried are really weak to one archetype or another. Probably the most consistent one I've found is G/W aggro pod splashing black for Unburial Rites (I posted it in the pod thread).. but that build still has a lot of trouble with early aggro.Posted in: FuneralofGod Blog
How has junk pod worked out for you lately? -
Oct 14, 2011FuneralofGod posted a message on Red Deck SucceedsWhy do I need Primeval Titan? I'm not trying to build Brian Sontag's deck like everyone else. I'd rather win before I have time to ramp.Posted in: FuneralofGod Blog
And yes Geistflame is awful that's why it's been in many top 8 lists. Honestly I'm iffy about it myself, but there's nothing better. Would you suggest shock or gut shot? I don't think so. -
Oct 14, 2011FuneralofGod posted a message on INN Block Constructed v. 2I could definitely see Ambush Viper in place of the Skaab.. but removing Unburial Rites would defeat the entire purpose of my deck. And why would I include Snapcaster?? I have hardly any instants and sorceries.. this isn't a control a deck, if you couldn't tell.Posted in: FuneralofGod Blog

If going for the purphoros combo, could we consider a singleton Deep Forest Hermit since hitting one of those alongside a pair of Purphoros should be GG. And if that's too cute then maybe at least a Haunted Dead or two?
I like the idea of having a 3rd copy of Finale if you're going all in on the combo game. Vengevine and Zombie package provides a nice aggro plan B as well
EDT
I like Claim//fame specifically because if it's in your graveyard you can recast the Reanimate half with an active Arcanist. But maybe Postmortem Lunge could be considered as well
4 Gravecrawler
4 Carrion Feeder
4 Stitcher's Supplier
3 Dreadhorde Arcanist
4 Bloodghast
4 Vengevine
2 Golgari Thug
4 Stinkweed Imp
2 Purphoros, god of the forge
3 Cathartic reunion
4 Memory Sluice
3 Living end
1 Finale of Promise
Lands (18)
4 Blackcleave Cliffs
4 Polluted Delta
4 Bloodstained mire
2 Overgrown Tomb
2 Blood Crypt
2 Swamp
I'd like to include Claim//Fame somehow to pull back a milled Arcanist but I'm just not sure there's room
4 Noble Hierarch
2 Arboreal Grazer
4 Tidehollow Sculler
1 Voice of Resurgence
1 Wasteland Strangler
1 Knight of Autumn
1 Eternal Witness
1 Fiend Hunter
1 Renegade Rallier
1 Siege Rhino
1 Restoration Angel
Spells (17)
3 Life from the Loam
3 Eldritch Evolution
3 Astral Drift
3 Path to Exile
2 Assassin's Trophy
2 Unearth
1 Dissenter's Deliverance
2 Blooming Marsh
4 Tranquil Thicket
2 Secluded Steppe
4 Windswept Heath
4 Verdant Catacombs
2 Marsh Flats
1 Temple Garden
1 Overgrown Tomb
1 Godless Shrine
2 Forest
2 Plains
1 Swamp
3 Thoughtseize
2 Scarab Feast
2 Collective Brutality
2 Ghost Quarter
1 Plague Engineer
1 Lone Missionary
1 Knight of Autumn
1 Dissenter's Deliverance
1 Vraska, Golgari Queen
1 Obstinate Baloth
The sideboard is mostly geared towards switching things up against either Tron or Burn.
Tron: -3 Path, -2 Lands, -1 Wasteland Strangler, -1 Fiend Hunter
+3 Thoughtseize, +2 GQ, +1 Druid's Deliverance, +1 Knight of Autumn
Burn: -1 Fiend Hunter, -1 Druid's Deliverance, -2 Assassin's Trophy, -1 Path to Exile
+1 Knight of Autumn, +1 Obstinate Baloth, +2 Collective Brutality, +1 Lone Missionary
I think not relying too heavily on the graveyard could be good because Jund and UWx can be a problem, and they have easy graveyard hate.
Example list: 1st place on MTGO PTQ
Noteworthy facts
- Knight of Autumn
- Kaya's Guile
- Maelstrom Pulse
- Eternal Witness
- Jace, Vryn's prodigy
Every other card in the deck I consider to be essential, and in most cases I would run more copies if I could. Even Chart a Course. It's very good in this type of shellFor the purposes of this exercise I consider Fulminator to be part of the core because of how good it is in the meta game. It's not great against Whirza, Humans, or any of the snow variation of decks for that matter. But it's decent against Burn, Jund and UW Control.. And it's fantastic against Tron and Scapeshift.
Looking at my flex slots and the cards I've chosen, notice they are all extremely flexible. I'd love to include probably +2 LOTV and +2 Chart a Course and maybe even another Snapcaster. But none of those offer the same unique flexibility that I have in these 5 cards. The only argument is that an extra Snap may be better than the first Eternal Witness. I think Witness getting back Fulminator, Ghost Quarter, Liliana, or a creature/threat is too valuable for such a low opportunity cost (i.e. 1 slot in my deck)
Only testing will tell if my presumptions are correct
It's funny you mention the Witness and Snapcaster though. I thought about dropping the Witness for another Snap but I like that Witness comes back with Titan and gets back Planeswalkers or even another threat such as Tarmogoyf.
Whirza is ridiculously powerful. It's not even Urza himself. But also holding removal for him doesn't help much when they can combo off at instant speed. It's a very consistent engine and Thopter + Sword can grind for a long time. Elesh Norn helps lock them off but they have soft locks of their own. Admittedly I haven't played this match up yet but I speculate that it might be difficult
Burn and Scapeshift can be kept at bay with a main deck Iona lock. Some main board life gain helps these match-ups as well..
Tron is very different. A reasonable clock is critical but we can lock them out in a single turn with a Gifts pile. My go-to is of course the Fulminator/Unearth/Sun Titan/Unburial Rites pile. But with 3-4 main deck Relic of Progenitus, they often laugh in our face.
Whirza is a whole new animal for me. Admittedly I haven't piloted any 4C Gifts configuration against this opponent yet. I would imagine that a pile such as Knight of Autumn / Unearth / Snapcaster Mage / Nature's Claim - would be pretty effective but I'm not about to keep a Nature's Claim in the main deck. Maybe a case could be made for a single Knight of Autumn since it has so many applications.
Admittedly I haven't played 4C gifts in a competitive REL environment is over 2 years. I've been a die-hard Death's Shadow grinder since then. But Shadow is heavily meta dependant and can get hosed out pretty badly if the stars don't align just right. In a wide open fresh meta game like we find ourselves in now, I think it's time I return to my Swiss Army Knife. Back to 4C gifts for a Modern Championship near me coming in a few weeks.

I'd really like to switch from Serum to Opt but SV works better with Street Wraith
DDG shenanigans aside, I've been having success with my Cathartic list. No demons, chill & dredge package
3 Gravecrawler
4 Stitcher's Supplier
4 Carrion Feeder
4 Bloodghast

No looting makes it a lot harder to keep 1-land opening hands but as long as I can cast Cathartic, Wayfinder, or Glowspore on turn two, then I can usually explode on turn 3
