  • posted a message on Liliana, Kaya, and the Obzedat
People have wondered how Kaya would play into Rav3, considering she is on the cover of the book. Here is a thought that I had this morning and hashed out with a friend--

In the second DOM installment, Liliana says that she cannot control a dread shade so long as Josu is alive, implying that she CAN control a shade if Josu is not around. A small logical leap would lead one to conclude that Lili can control ghosts, if she can control shades.

Is it possible that, instead of killing the Obzedat, that Liliana becomes the PW in control of the Orzhov by taking control of the Ghost Council? She would not become the de facto guild leader, therefore she would not need to become BW.

This could also lead to the reason why Kaya appears in Rav3--she is on the side of the Gatewatch, and she has to kill the Obzedat and take over Orzhov to rob Liliana (and therefore Bolas) of control of a guild.

    Thoughts?

Don't forget Haphazard Bombardment for any Land Destruction deck...it can really do work, especially in multiples.

This is actually exactly the case. They are trying to design a "New Player Experience" (NPE). They want the situation to be such that there is no room for error; if you try to pass priority without blocking for example, they lecture you and tell you "block or you will lose next turn". IIRC, in one of the engagements you hold onto the "only cast during attack phase" instant for two turns before the game allows you to cast it; there is a HUGE amount of restrictions on the play of these cards in the NPE, because the tutorial is trying to teach the basic concepts of many things like evergreen keywords. You don't even get *introduced* to instants until the 4th of 5 tutorial matches...they are REALLLLLY dumbed down.

Also--only the white cards are playable/obtainable from what I have seen so far...the creature that deals 5 damage on ETB for example is only playable by the AI opponent, as is the crab and the B removal spell--someone please correct me if I am incorrect but I have not seen an option to obtain those cards at all.

    Edited for spelling

Also, the last Mythic should be Tezzeret, I believe.

I really think The Immortal Sun will eventually be banned. It costs a lot of mana, sure, but it completely shuts down Planeswalker Commanders (who, outside of Nicol Bolas (and maybe Karn, now) are all pretty slow/weak already).

I love that Felidar Guardian was unbanned. I really like the card, even if it is kind of dumb with Saheeli Rai.

Thing is, according to Gatherer the only Commander that can run both cards is Jodah, Archmage Eternal anyway. Considering that card can already play Zacama, Primal Calamity and follow it up with Nicol Bolas, God-Pharaoh on turn 5, I am not sure it makes the deck a lot better on the rare occasions when you hit those two singletons out of 60 cards.

I feel like anything trying to use Fall of the Thran needs to use Sylvan Awakening. Do keep in mind that gives them indestructible, and you can then play Fall into a one sided land wipe. Expensive, for sure, but you are already ramping, so...

I am really curious about the capabilities that Raff Capashen, Ship's Mage gives us in this deck, making the whole deck operable at instant speed. What do you guys think of Raff?

The Raptors that enter the battlefield after HI resolves aren't indestructible, only the ones that were on the battlefield when it resolved get Indestructible. You can make wave after wave of Raptor if you like (hence all the triggers), but eventually some of the new ones die to damage and eventually a steady state maximum is reached.
    Don't think so.

Every polyraptor will make 5 polyraptors before it dies. And every one of those make 5.

    It's definitely infinite.

Or to say it another way, exponential. Good luck naming an accurate boardstate though, if you are going to try to shortcut it to more than say, 500 or so.

So... just wondering here... Fatal Push at $9. Is this the highest price ever for a Standard-legal uncommon?

Maybe Path to Exile at some point? I mean first off it isn't actually printed at the same rate as every other AER uncommon, plus you have a set that virtually every player wants four of or more. I doubt it will even drop at rotation, because most players will say "eh if I ever want to play modern I'll want these" and hold them.

I know this is an old post, but just want to throw two words in here..."confirmation bias." I got 3x Fatal Push in my one box of AER I bought. Was I lucky as hell? Yes. Does it show that your assumption that Push is more rare than other AER uncommons is incorrect? Likely yes.

    ***EDIT***

Nice job refuting what I actually said by the way. Provide me some sort of proof outside anecdotal evidence and I might actually start to disbelieve what MaRo says, but until you provide some sort of proof of your refutation I will believe the official source Redacted for flaming/trolling.

Per General Forum rules, "We do not recognize excuses such as "he flamed me first!"; if you feel attacked by other members, report the post and let moderators handle it rather than flame back." Knock it off! Thanks - hoser2

One--currently there is some flexibility in regards to whether White in particular will have one less card; the first blue card is 2 cards in according to the current crunch (#42)...in this same vein, none of the mono color ranges have their "first" card spoiled currently, so this could flex all the way down to Green and Pendelhaven potentially, as @thatmarkguy said.

Two--RIX, counting Azor's Gateway had 16/15 mythics. I am not saying it is likely, but it is *possible* that there are 16 mythics.

Three--Afterlife and Abbey Gargoyles are the first suggestions I have seen of any card that could come in at #1 besides a colorless.

Four--a colorless card doesn't absolutely have to be Karn or Ugin; Thought Knot Seer would be an excellent historical reprint.

All these things add up to the fact that I still think it is possible that #1 is a colorless card.
I really don't think it can flex like this. Point by point:

One - Animar means that green can't move up further. Pendelhaven doesn't appear to count as a green card (at least not like Karakas did for EMA, because green still has 6 rares without it.
Two - Sure, I have no counterpoint here. It's 13 instead of 12, but this is valid.
Three - They're the first suggestions, yes, but you can look up and see there are plenty of options.
Four - It doesn't have to be, but there also aren't any rare slots left.

On point three--I did look it up, a couple days ago when Akroma's Vengeance got spoiled. At that point in time there were 64 cards in the history of MtG that were mono W and fell before Akroma's Vengeance alphabetically. One of those would be Akroma (obviously). I cannot recall if any fell in between; at best though, that leaves 63 possibilities in the whole history of Magic, and I know of at least two (Academy Rector and Abeyance) that are on the reserve list. I don't know if I term 61 (or less) cards out of ~18,000 in total as "plenty".

    **EDIT**

The full list of cards it is possible to be:

    Abbey Gargoyles
    Abbey Griffin
    Abbey Matron
    Abeyance
    Abolish
    Absolute Grace
    Absolute Law
    Absolver Thrull
    Abu Ja'far
    Abuna Acolyte
    Abuna's Chant
    Abzan Advantage
    Abzan Battle Priest
    Abzan Falconer
    Abzan Runemark
    Abzan Skycaptain
    Accorder Paladin
    Acolyte's Reward
    Acrobatic Maneuver
    Act of Authority
    Act of Heroism
    Adanto Vanguard
    Adarkar Unicorn
    Adarkar Valkyrie
    Admonition Angel
    Adorned Pouncer
    Advance Scout
    Aegis Angel
    Aegis of Honor
    Aegis of the Gods
    Aerial Maneuver
    Aerial Modification
    Aerial Responder
    Aerie Mystics
    Aeronaut Admiral
    Aether Inspecter
    Aether Shockwave
    Aethergeode Miner
    Aetherstorm Roc
    Affa Guard Hound
    Affa Protector
    Afterlife
    Ainok Bond-Kin
    Aierdrop Aeronauts
    Ajani Goldmane
    Ajani Steadfast
    Ajani, Caller of the Pride
    Ajani's Chosen
    Ajani's Mantra
    Ajani's Presence
    Ajani's Pridemate
    Ajani's Sunstriker
    Akrasan Squire
    Akroan Jailer
    Akroan Mastiff
    Akroan Phalanx
    Akroan Skyguard

    So 57 cards.

I'm hoping for Elspeth knight errant because I can't think of anything else of decent value to throw in that spot.

I'm thinking Gideon, Ally of Zendikar for the White Mythic, because what else are they going to get to represent BFZ? Ulamog is the only other worthy card in the set, and I think they'll wait to reprint the Eldrazi in a single set.

Animar murdered all hope for colorless cards all together for this.

Animar is #196 and the last green is #195

And also colorless starts a #001 in every set as well by akroma's vengeance at #003 I think there's no colorless either

So karn and eldrazi's are out.

Colorless cards go at the beginning. Karn, Liberated was 1/175 in New Phyrexia. Elder Deep-Fiend is 5/203 in EMN. That is how they work. There are only 64 mono-white black bordered cards in the history of MtG that come before Akroma's Vengeance alphabetically according to Gatherer...none of them are even 1/10 as iconic as Karn, Ugin, or Eldrazi. I say with some confidence that at least one of 1 and 2, and maybe both, are colorless cards.

These two posts give slightly conflicting information. Bishop of Binding's owner is going to be different than Tishana, Voice of Thunder 's owner. Which hand does the P/T depend on? I think I agree with @peteroupc's answer of the "owner's" hand, but not certain. (I think the answer to "what player's hand does the P/T depend upon" would be different if say, an Entrancing Melody had stolen Tishana instead?)
