Cross tribe cards are hard since they would have to be extra powerful to counteract not benefitting from the other tribal boosts in those decks. Knight-Captain of Eos and Hero of Bladehold, Knights that otherwise fit a Soldier deck, are the examples that come to my mind. If they themselves were Soldiers, I'd be more inclined to play them.
Otherwise, great science post.
Black-bordered Lightning Bolts at a reasonable cost? Yes, please.
(Ice Age and the Coldsnap theme decks already provided that service for my Swords to Plowshares, and Swords I admit probably won't be coming back especially with PtE around)
With the amount of new-set product I open, I'll have a very healthy supply of Lightning Bolts. Time for the classically obnoxious 15-Mountain-25-Bolt.dec ?
I'd like to hear your stories.
I normally use MWS on my Windows box, but I'm trying to get it working on my Linux machine (Ubuntu 9.04, GNOME, Intel x86 32-bit) as a side project.
I have it working, somewhat
I got (whatever the latest version of WINE is) from Applications | Add/Remove; that part worked fine.
Then, as WINE's appDB suggested, I downloaded http://www.kegel.com/wine/winetricks
and ran the following terminal command (after I did sudo apt-get install coreutils):
sh winetricks corefonts [Make sure that the 'winetricks' section of the command is refferring to the directory where the script as actually located]
Download the MWS executable like usual, just open it with WINE.
Then do the same thing with the executable that installs the card database.
Then run Magic Workstation. (Applications/WINE/Programs/Magic Workstation/Magic Workstation)
It works pretty much like native Windows until you actually get a game started (connect to server and join works like normal)
You can still play, but it's choppy/slow. Disconnections also seem more frequent. (Even though I'm only a few feet away from the router, that may be partially blame-able on the laptop's WiFi as opposed to the Windows desktop's hardwired Internet connection. Eventually, I may get the laptop on a hardwired connection, see if that helps.)
Also, the cards and card pictures are readable, but are upside down.
Sometimes, the game's keyboard shortcuts don't work; I haven't noticed any shortcuts that are *consistent* failures
I'm about 10 feet away from the router, so I don't think that's the issue
The WiFi'd laptop is, logically, going to yield different results from the hardwired desktop on which I normally play MWS without incident.
However, I'm setting up MWS on my secondary computer, and I'm showing up as "Player".
Of course, I want to fix this.
Anyone know how?
magic-league.servegame.com doesn't seem to cooperate, getting the same can't-connect error.
I don't know of any other servers, sorry.
forums.gleemax.com is down for maintenance AGAIN, does this mean I'll ned to put down the MTG and actually do some work LOL
I open a large amount of boxes, but I tend not to try too hard cracking this data myself.
Sorting the packs' content (since I need to ship singles and complete sets to my customers) is already taking enough time, and my minimal notes take plenty of time, let alone writing down the full contents of each pack.
Plus, teasing out the actual runs from data is possible
About how many packs did it take you to crack the print run?
Do you notice any pattern between the common runs of different packs in the same box? (All I notice is that cards from a similar section of the print run are often in adjacent packs, but that doesn't fit tonether in a perfect pattern or anything...)
It works.
EDIT: Fixed some typos and other goofs in my copy/version of the spoiler.
Round 1 (Some random control deck) [Won 2-0]:
I don't think this deck was complete junk, more like hit-or-miss. And ti missed (bad draws?)
Round 2 (B/G Rock) [Won 2-1]:
Hard-fought, just pulled it off.
Was able to keep up the removal pressure - often Wraths for the regular creatures, Paths for the manlands.
I recall Planeswalkers being stalling removal magnet,s in addition to gettign a couple abilities off.
Round 3 (R/W something) [Won 2-1]:
First game I lost, in large part because I couldn't keep up with early Banefires.
This deck was quite creature-light, which made my sideboarding calls easier.
Balefire Liege was useful for lifegain (gave me some breathing room, and preventing Feudkiller's Verdict from making d00ds), and for being a removal magnet (I did Lark it back a few times)
Pushed through the win with Ajani Vengeant and assorted tokens swinging.
Oh yeah, and a powered-up Figure of Destiny
Had Ranger'ed for Figure and Burrenton Forge-Tender, Forge-tender saved Figure from some burn and I was able to amp it up in short order.
I recall seeing Mountain, Plains, Ghitu Encampment, Rugged Prairie, Mutavault, Feudkiller's Verdict, Martial Coup, Banefire, Incinerate, Flame Javelin, Ajani Vengeant [Got my own Johnny V out from under Heights once, to kill his with style points.]
Round 4 (Mistmeadow Witch/Bloom Tender) [Lost 0-2]
Got steamrolled in both the first game and the second.
Mainly, I just couldn't keep up with the CA; the threats I was able to pump out were easily dealt with. Stuff was blinked out of the way of removal.
Didn't play as well as I could have (late in the evening, and time running out, I think that may have had something to do with it.), but I don't exactly see what I *could* have done, the way that deck had been running
Sometimes I'm paranoid about my post being lost in a deck thread; then again, posting int he deck thread would get me in contact with people who are specialists in playing that deck.
Specifically, I was able to use ARB cards in one of my decks and play a game with said deck without incident; I haven't tried the sealed/draft features
For those of me who are unfamiliar with the MWS interface, just want to point out that "Analyze/Add/Remove Sets..." is in the Tools menu.
Once I figured that out, I got this to work.
Cerodon Yearling - in for Fanatic?
Fight to the Death - ?
Glory of Warfare - in for the 5th planeswalker in my build?
Intimidation Bolt - ?
Any of these guys may go in for a 4th Lark; I'm thinking of trimming the Lark count anyway.
As a new thread, or in the thread for $deck_you_played?
I don't like a 4 mana Helix, plus the lockdown ability often comes down too late to be relevant, and I can never seem to hit the ultimate.
I have since switched the planeswalker package to 3x Vengeant, 1x Goldmane, 1x Elspeth
The 4th Vengeant sits in sideboard right now.
Since I have a second Goldmane around anyway, am tempted to switch to 2x Vengeant 2x Goldmane
May even go down to 3 Ajani's, since I often seem to run into "Planeswalker legend rule" problems from having too many copies around.
When I started out this build, I had 4x Mogg Fanatic, I'm now down to 2 and liking them less and less, since so many of the creatures I see are big d00ds that Fanatic doesn't touch. [I suppose that would make it a meta choice]
I'm just not liking Knight of the White Orchid, and have since taken them out in favor of Mind Stone. I feel KotWO is too hit-or-miss, and getting double-white on turn 2 when you really need it can be a problem. Plus, the standard play sequence for KotWO seems to be:
"T3, you on the play: Play KotWO, your opponent has 3 so you can get one. Do so. Make a normal land drop"
In such situations I often don't have much I can do right away with the 2 untapped lands I end up with.
Once it gets rolling, it's hard to stop, so you've got time to engage in Mulldrifter beatdown.
I played against this at the FLGS on Tuesday. I was using Boat Brew, and I got steamrolled in both game 1 and game 2. Most of my threats simply didn't do much.
(That deck was 4-0 that night; not sure what the guy's other three matchups were.)
I'm trying this decklist:
5 Plains (1)
6 Island (1)
4 Forest (1)
2 Seaside Citadel
1 Adarkar Wastes
1 Brushland
1 Yavimaya Coast
1 Mystic Gate
1 Wooded Bastion
1 Flooded Grove
4 Bloom Tender
4 Glen Elendra Archmage
4 Mistmeadow Witch
4 Mulldrifter
4 Reveillark
2 Seedborn Muse
3 Sower of Temptation
// Spells
1 Cryptic Command
4 Oblivion Ring
4 Path to Exile
3 Turn to Mist
4 Negate
2 Wrath of God
3 Controlled Instincts
4 Celestial Purge
2 Wall of Reverence
Some of these cards I simply don't have, or don't have enough of. Even so, several of the cards I am running have been called up from my collection-binder reserves
As such, I can't add more Cryptics or ***'s right now
Reflecting Pool and Vivid lands I do have, and very well might run.
I need to run this through intense MWS testing, before I do that, I don't feel I can say a whole lot more.
