I have been working on a GB Rock build, and have been testing Kitesail Freebooter. The guy is great in the deck. Great early game opener. Its definitely a tempo play. It got me thinking...I used to play delver before Tasigur existed. Is kitesail a tempo card that delver could use? His evasion fits the delver play style and IMO is what really pushes the card. Thinking of a grixis delver build with him in it. Delver would probably be good in my meta as well. Struggling with my midrange builds at the moment. Lots of big decks in my meta, Eldrazi, Scapeshift, Tron, etc.
TL/DR: Is Delver still a tempo deck? Or is it more midrangy these days? And thoughts on kitesail freebooter to support tempo play?
Quirion Dryad is garbage. Olivia isnt that good either. Bloodhall Ooze with Winding Constrictor is nuts. Revised, gonna try the Curse of Stalked Prey Route.
Just brainstorming here, not expecting T1 or T2 with this list, but seems fun and could maybe catch some people off guard? Not looking to go affinity route, which is better,(regular affinity is better than hardened scales affinity anyways). Jund seems to be synergize well, and opens up the sideboard. Help me tune it!
Game 1 - 2-0 RW Norin Soul Sisters. Not even close. He never drew a SS, and I beat down with thopter/sword.
Game 2 - 2-1 UW Control. Got crushed game 1, opponent had a counterspell for literally everything. 2 games in a row, stuck thopter sword. He couldnt deal
Game 3 - 0-2 Burn, Eidelon both games, and double GG. Just got decimated
Game 4 - 0-2 Merfolk, Island Walk....its a thing
Game 5 - 1-2 Emrakul Ramp. Rocked him game 1 with thopter sword. mana screwed last 2 games.....
Ive been running the old plan creatures and having lots of success with Nissa, Young Wolf, and Blossoming Defense due to the vast amount of control decks in modern
However I kill in MTGO tournament practice but went 0-3 in an actual league. I have major issues against any G/R ramp, including Valakut, and Im 50/50 against UW Control and Tron. Nissa and Young Wolf definitely improve my chances against UW, and as a stategy i always leave a green up for a hexproof spell if i suspect removal, but I still have no answer for Valakut. What do you think are my main flaws here and/or play style?
Edit, I also like the card Hardened Scales and want to play test it in place of nissa, or in combination with nissa
@TheGameCritique Hey thanks for the input. I went ahead and ordered this in paper, hoping to steal some wins in FNM Modern. I did find out through MTGO playtesting that Young Wolf is so much value, especially against the control decks. The only value I find with Dryad Militant is that on turn two it lets me +1 my EO and leave a mana up for a Vines or Blossoming Defense. Maybe there is room to cut that card? I also have found a lot of success sideboarding Nissa in against control. The Treetops also improve my chances against control. I would think that Black splash would be best at this point, but maybe Red to Sideboard in Boom//Bust for Valukut and Tron match ups.
Edit, To add to the thread Narnam Renegade seems like a defensive card. At best its a worse Kird Ape on the offense.
Edit, also has anyone considered splashing white for Kytheon?
Edit, Beast Within also may be a thing, use it against Tron or Valakut, worst case Beast Within ur own land on their end step to get a 3/3 and go for lethal?
I love this deck and I was killing it in MTGO open play tournament practice. I got ballsy enough and joined a league and went 0-3. Got crushed by valakut, UW control, and jund. Am i doing something wrong, this deck doesnt seem like it can compete?
