  • posted a message on Mailing Cards to a College Campus?
I'm a college student who likes to trade in the online community (Deckbox mostly).

I've recently moved onto campus and want to continue trading in the meantime. Has anyone had any experience with being mailed cards on a college campus (to the college mail service) or something like that? Is it less secure than mailing cards to an apartment or home? Should I avoid doing so?

Thanks in advance and take care!

Steppe Lynx in red? Count me in. Red one-drop quality drops off earlier than black and white. Probably going to shave one of my remaining 1-power ones for this.

A recursive and evasive Red 3-drop. Immediately bears comparison to Phoenix of Ash. Loses ability to pump for inability to block. Recursion is now tied to damage dealt, not cards in GY, which makes it worse against sweepers. Can't attack the same turn it's brought back, but does so for a much lower cost.

That said, it's a nice evasive piece of damage that most Red decks can recur.

Unsure if it'll make it in at 540, but it's a nice alternative to more Rabblemaster variants.

Been lurking on the Cube forum for a few months. Finally popping in to say how useful the SCD threads, general articles/posts about cube construction, and budget staple recommendations shaped my cube. I've gotten around to actually building one in paper, and it's been some of the best fun I've ever had in Magic. All in no small part to this forum.

Sad to see MTGS go, but happy to find another domain where I can contribute.

Not a big fan of Bugler. I feel that our already existing options outweigh what he can provide. For 3-drop value creatures, I prefer mainboard Witness. Its ability to recycle threats or rebuy a combo piece is much stronger than getting a random thing from the top of your deck. In the grindy matchups when you need to grind G1, Witness gets you an impactful card 100% of the time. In a faster matchup, Bugler's ability to dig deep to the combo makes him better G1. However, in a matchup like those, I board out my Witnesses, and would do the same for Bugler. I need to be fast in those games, and a 3-drop that "draws a card" doesn't really achieve that for me.

I want my deck to grind better, and because of that, I run Witness over Bugler. If non-interactive (that don't involve sending stuff to the yard) decks are really running rampant, then I would definitely make that switch to Bugler. However, the "value 3-drop" is pretty bad in any non-interactive matchup, which is what pushes me to value the grind potential over mostly everything else. I do also note that the better body is relevant against Mardu or any other Lingering Souls/Young Pryo matchups.

I don't really run Tracker in this type of deck anymore. Since we're so chock-full of combo pieces, I find that rebuying a value creature or perhaps another piece is simply more relevant for the "value 3-drop". Tracker's advantage is that left unchecked, it dominates the game by virtue of being a threat. Sucks a lot more in fast matchups compared to Bugler, but I would still play Tracker over Bugler. Bugler itself really isn't a must answer threat. Tracker is, and when you're playing against midrange or control, you need your threat density to be high. If I want to grind, I would play Tracker, but only in the board.

If the meta requires us to be uber-fast, I'd go with Bugler. Unfortunately, I don't feel like we're at that point yet, so he's gonna sit out on the sidelines.

Been testing Pharika, God of Affliction as a replacement for Tracker/Courser in grindy matchups because it doesn't die. Not super impressed with it so far, but I prefer it over the latter. Being impossible to remove is rather good, especially when blockers are relevant.

  • posted a message on Soul-Scar Mage and Damage Prevention
Came up in theoretical discussion last Friday, and I can't seem to come to an answer. If my opponent has a Soul-Scar Mage, and he casts a sweeper effect, like Anger of the Gods, normally my creatures would receive a swath of -1/-1 counters. If they die, would this put them into exile, as Soul-Scar Mage's ability replaces the damage being dealt?

Furthermore, if I have a Burrenton Forge-Tender, and sacrifice it to prevent the damage from Anger, would the spell fail to put counters on my creatures, as the damage is prevented and cannot be replaced by Soul-Scar Mage's ability? Or would Soul-Scar Mage's ability replace the damage being dealt, leaving no damage to prevent and three -1/-1 counters being applied to my creatures.

    Thanks in advance!

Lastly, is Soul-Scar Mage's effect a replacement effect for dealing damage?

I play a very similar list. But i have a 3 Duskwatch Recruiter and 3 Vizier of Remedies split instead of the 2/4 split as i dont want to draw multiple Vizier of Remedies. He is the worst card in the deck outside of the combo.

Also i use spell queller instead of Reflector Mage. People told me that Reflector Mage is a better fit, because you want to coco on our turn to hit the combo, but thats only true if you already have a Devoted Druid thats not summoning sick and an opponent without removal.

What do you think about the cardchoices?
While Queller is an awesome magic card, and is the biggest argument for regular Knightfall, I just really don't like it as much in the Vizier version because it's a reactive card in a proactive deck. You never really want to just "pass the turn" in this deck, because of your combo pieces. You always want to be building pressure by deploying more threats. Queller doesn't become relevant in that case until the endgame. Which, because of the combos, you should have won by them.

That's just my thoughts on Queller in this version. I honestly prefer Reflector to Queller because Reflector is a proactive card. He's getting you ahead or buying you time when you deploy him. Having a creature to target is a very frequent event, and it saves you from turn two Baral and the like. With Queller, you have to hold up the mana, stifling your own development. In a nutshell, Queller just clashes with the deck's plan. But if it works for you, I'd definitely like to hear that. The proactive argument makes me skeptical about including Quellers in my Vizier Knightfall build, but I'd like to hear how that works for you.

I'm pretty sure this is the Chew Brew, and I've found it to be pretty solid. If you're looking for suggestions on it, I might try out a Selfless Spirit or two in place of a Vizier or Duskwatch. Maybe drop a Staticaster side for a Chord? Other than that, the list is fine. Though I'm not sure if I like Vizier build more.

Guys, what's the correct amount of lands/mana dorks? So far I have been successful with 22 Lands, 4 Hierarchs, 4 Birds. But lately I have playtested a good amount against Jund Midrange, Jeskai Control and Grixis DS aka matchups in which your dorks won't survive. So I struggled to get to 4 mana easily. I thought about adding one more land (I do actually see a lot of current lists playing 23 lands), but I feel 27 creatures is a pretty low number for a company deck. Also, in case you play 23 lands, do you still play 8 dorks or cut 1 bird? Opinions?

I find this question a lot, and honestly, it's very relevant. I run 4 Birds, 4 Hierarchs, and 22 Lands, similar to you. Dorks aren't great to hit off of Company, so cutting them really won't impact them much. Are you ever excited to hit a Birds off of one? Not much different than whiffing. With lots of non-white Midrange, one land for a dork makes sense. But keep in mind that our deck's power is at the 3-drop slot. If you're playing 4 Reflector, 4 Queller, 4 Knight, I might advise against it because you'll struggle to land your threats in a timely fashion.

What are your thoughts on Gideon of the Trials and Nissa, Steward of Elements in the sideboard. I've experimented a little bit with both and I've been impressed. Nissa really helps through midrange-y slogfests, and Gideon gives you room against unfair decks. Because our midrange MU's seem pretty good, with our average card quality being really high, I'm inclined to run Gideon over Nissa. Is there merit to running both? (Probably as a two-of)

I have a Dark Petition and another instant or sorcery in my graveyard, and a Kess, Dissident Mage in play. If I cast the Dark Petition, does it see itself for Spell Mastery? I believe it does, because it doesn't see itself when you cast it from your hand. The key part is the Kess doesn't exile on cast, but states that "if a card cast this way would go into your graveyard this turn, exile it instead."

    Thanks!

i still don't understand how anyone could think I was scum this game with how Grapefruit took advantage of my case on nobue. That wagon proves I'm town beyond a doubt.

Maybe I'm just not familiar with the meta at all here, but I felt you were going for a strong, controlling style of play. The night kills led me really pushed me there. The way you were playing reminded me heavily of the controlling style, which I felt was more evident that Grape/Tom's plan. I just don't think I know enough about this game to make judgement calls. Sorry about that.

    You know, let's end this.

    Vote: Rhand

I hope I didn't choose wrong... It's just that Scum Rhand would obviously be running a steamroller, something the night kills and voting record suggests. That's not something Scum Tom could account for since the beginning and follow through this conveniently. That is all. GG.
