The End of an Era

Hey all, quick update from GPLV, I'm 7-2 in the modern main after day 1. Made day 2 and still playing for top 8 or cash out.

I also played burn in GPLV legacy main to 11-4 only taking losses 3&4 in round 13&14 so I was very much in it right until the end. Top 8 was x/2s and a few x/3s.

So harsh mentor very effective vs the new creature toolbox deck but is it good enough vs the rest of the meta to warrant any inclusion in the 75?

I'm thinking grafdiggers cage is still better oversll

Exactly this, but void can steal a game and against dredge and belcher as well. Dredge they have a hard time dealing with it

I like ensnaring bridge a lot in legacy for burn but in modern there is a lot of kolaghan's command running around main but I wouldn't say anyone is wrong for running it, its just not as insane as it is in legacy.

Yeah every format eldrazi has had a huge impact. Legacy Eldrazi is ridiculous as well, however its still a winnable match up in each format. I personally have path, Drev and some number of deflecting palm come in. I basically side out everyone but Guide and my slowest racing cards. Right now i'm at 4x path, 4x rev, 3x deflecting palm and i'd bring them all in for 4 swiftspear 4 eidolon 3 searing blaze.

Does anyone run 1 Plains in their deck? My Sacred Foundry's have been getting destroyed a lot lately making it impossible to play path, boros charm, and helix. Escpecially on MTGO (Tpeps). Also, for those who play MTGO are you guys also experiencing 75% of the opponents conceding on T1 after they see a guide or swiftspear? I've resorted to only playing constructed tournaments online in order to actually get a full game in x(

You'll hurt yourself far more by including a land that can't cast Lightning Bolt (or fetch a land that can) than you gain by having a basic that taps for W. You're better off playing mono-R in such a toxic meta than you are adding Forests or Plains. I expect that the meta isn't that toxic and that you just need to fetch more aggressively.

If you're seeing a lot of MTGO immediate concessions, I assume you're playing in a just for fun room? If so, that's the problem. Free rooms are going to be full of people who rage quit like that.

It's best to go full troll at that point and go out of your way to join their hosted matches as much as you can.

Any secret tech against reanimator & show?

    I hate scooping to Iona...

Doesn't help vs Iona specifically but bridge has been pretty awesome for me. I think Storm is a worse match up personally.

With the banning of Top, Harsh Mentor does become less appealing Frown It still hits Deathrites and that alone still might warrant it's inclusion in the mainboard not to mention the occasional value it will generate against D&T with all them Moms, Vials, and Jittes Unibrow

Here is my *burning* (haha get it... I know not very punny) question: does the banning of Top no longer warrant the use of 2x Vexing Shusher in my sideboard? With the expected rise in BUG Delver decks increase as every Miracles player abandons ship. Maybe that two-of slot in the SB might be filled by Harsh Mentor if I don't end up running him in the main.

I dropped my miracles hate mostly, i still have vortex cause its still good vs delver and randomly show and tell if they play griselbrand. You still probably lose but you may not be drawing dead.

Anyways, point is I think you are fairly safe at this point to reduce your control hate, so far I'm running into tons of delver, D&T, Stoneblade, Storm.

    ymmv

IF the main deck mentor is good against so far are vial decks im not sure this is worth it over just smashes and searing effects (which are good in other match ups).

@Sixfootsev3n I have a question about your Naya Burn sideboard. Why Tormod's Crypt instead of Grafdigger's Cage or Relic of Progenitus? I'm seeing more deck lists with Relic instead of Grafdigger, and I don't understand the change. Grafdigger seems pretty powerful against graveyard decks in general.

That list is actually outdated, currently I'm running 4x relic, 4x path, 3x deflecting palm, 4x d rev.

I go back and forth between crypt and relic. Crypt I like because it doesn't interrupt your plan, you can cast your spells as normal and drop it for free thus staying on track for your plan. In addition it triggers prowess so dropping it T1 with Swiftspear isn't horrible. The downside is that later in a game it can effectively be a dead card where as relic at least cycles.

Also to answer your question, relic is the choice now vs grafdigger to combat Death Shadow Jund. You attack their GY and reduce the count of card types to neuter tarmogoyf but almost more importantly turn off delirium thus changing their traverse the ulvenwalds from 1 mana creature tutor to just a land tutor.

Todays meta I play 4x relic because DSJ is very good and very popular.

edit: I updated my burn list in my signature thanks for pointing that out, i'm gonna go through and clean those up.

4x skullcrack 4x atarka command. Know the match ups its played in (DSJ plays 1 sometimes but most builds dont, lantern does, GB tron does but GW tron has been upticking more, Dredge, some variants of abzan/jund). One thing I have noticed though is most are only playing 1-2 in the 75. So if its a match that might have it and you have some of your answers try and keep mana up and just throw burn EOT and once you effectively negate the effects of the first one play like they have no more in the deck (also they'll be out of cards basically so even if they do they probably wont get enough value fast enough anymore to avoid getting burned out.

For me when looking at options for my burn list to deal with a problematic card I first look to card that still deal damage first if possible. We have 8 cards that deal damage that can mitigate most of the effects of CB and then your opponent is basically out of resources.

Just give it a try vs those matches with a buddy, both cards do a reasonable job against it and keeps you on plan vs everyone else without diluting your 'combo' too much. Right now I personally have 4x skullcrack and 2x atarka's command main. I switched 2 commands over to lightning helix as brutality has been less of a concern and I have enough "hate" to have a decent chance to answer it.

Deflecting palm does nothing against ad nas. They have 3x pact in the deck and therefore in their hand when they lightning storm. If you want to beat ad nas through their combo it requires angels grace in side board.

Grey Ogre's body is outclassed before it hits the board in modern, paying 3 mana for maybe 3 damage isn't very good either. I saw this card and freaked out and wanted to Jam 4x of them until I realized its only 1 per non basic which unfortunately is a rather large difference especially at the cost of 3 mana. At that mana I'd rather run Blightning.

Trap is literally and metaphorically a trap. It's not proactive and gets stripped by discard. Pillar is better and if it's ANT then any GY hate helps too. TES you need eidolon or pillar imo.

Given we have Eidolon in the main, its not wrong to not have any further sideboard hate directed at Storm (e.g. Pillar). We essentially are preboarded for that matchup. I sometimes rock a couple of Pillar if Storm had a good showing, but otherwise find it more useful to just run 3x Ensnaring Bridge and 2-3x Tormod's Crypt for Sneak & Show and Reanimator decks. The rest of the slots usually are taken up by Firecraft (Miracles), Smash, and creature kill (Blaze/Blood).

Doesn't ensnaring bridge have problems vs reanimator due to tidespout tyrant? I really like the idea of bridge vs sneak show/random depths decks plus all the various creature decks who wouldnt be prepared for you to bring in an artifact but i was concerned that it doesnt really do much vs reanimator. I was kind of toying with the idea of maze of ith.
