Just out of curiosity, are you nuts? These cards would be broken in half and all decks would play one of each. Maybe put in some kind of additional cost?
I empathise with this situation, but I totally see the progression in my own experience. When I was younger (teenager), I'd play magic with friends and we'd happily trade with one another after games. But that was before the internet made prices so readily available. Now people are more concerned with value than anything else, and of course buying online means I can almost always get what I want without having to ask around who has what.
On the topic of trade binders, I would never bring a trade binder to an event anymore. Magic cards are too easy to steal as they're tiny and valuable. If you're going through my trade binder, I can't play games while you search (unless I trust you). So trading has become this tedious exercise where someone spends 5-10 minutes in your binder then offers you a dumb trade for cards you don't want. Repeat with the next guy.
Plus how many stories have we heard of people getting their binders or decks stolen at events. It's much easier to only bring a deck and watch it closely than bringing multiple valuable items and keeping track of all of them.
This is partially why I prefer playing with friends. You all know each other and the goal is to have fun, not necessarily to win. The only downside is you're limited in terms of the larger Magic community.
They just do stuff, then get MaRo or somebody else to retroactively spin it to make it seem like there was a plan.
So much this. My favotite was they did new planes for 5-10 years from Mirrodin to Zendikar, then they did Scars of Mirrodin. Then Innistrad, Return to Ravnica, etc, and Maro announced they were doing 50% new sets, 50% return sets. People were a little confused/unsure that would work, and he's like: we've been doing it for 6 years already! Quite the (retroactive) plan right there!
Wizards are the kings of Retcons. Move over Marvel, out of the way George Orwell. They're always like: it's always been this way, don't worry about it. Nissa. Jace. Dominia/Dominaria. Dozens of examples if you look. Then they spin!
Ruling makes sense in the spirit of the card. The point us to cull the weak, An indestructible creature will stop the process, but that shouldn't mean the other creatures that are the same size now get a free pass. If this card were made today, it would sacrifice and that would be the end if that.
The next time WotC decides to do one of their Designer Searches, one of the things they should ask of applicants is to design a RG walker that doesn't cost four and will excite the player base. Obviously there's nobody currently working within that company that is capable of completing that task.
This made me lol so hard.
-We have a hole in the new set.
-Gruul 4-mana walker?
-You know it
I also think Bolas' -4 means you'll never really need to use his ultimate.
Am I the only one who feels like someone should get fired over this? MaRo keeps talking about how the job is so hard, yards yadda. Like other people don't have jobs that are hard? Maybe it's time to change a few people. I actually like MaRo a lot but some of the Wizards team maybe should cycle out.
Egregious errors of the last year or two:
- 2 card infinite combo in block, and then 3 months to ban it.
- typo on Monarch card that got printed in Conspiracy (this one bugged me a lot)
- Failure to print Damnation in FTV: Annihilation (story keeps changing as to why...)
- Terrible Battle for Zendikar set/environment/mechanics
- Introducing colorless mana symbol halfway through a block
- Developping Smuggler's Copter. Why not make it 2/3 and Sky Skiff 3/3? MaRo keeps talking about how rates can be strictly better but it this one was flagrant and OP.
There are more that are more questionable but I think all of the above speak to Wizards' current incompetence. Especially missing a 2-card infinite combo in block, then not banning it, then banning it 2 days later. Three bad decisions from one situation. In any real business, whoever was in charge would be reprimanded/canned. Wizards might get away with it because they're a mobopply. I hope there's some accountability for this debacle.
Yeah this has been covered a few times, most recently on MaRo's Tumblr where he explained it was clearer this way, even if it's redundant. Makes me think of the famous "Your creatures can help pay for this spell" on new convoke cards.
They swear they're not dumbing down the game, but they're certainly dumbing down the reminder text.
Ugh, I don't know how it'll play, but it reads horribly. Card disadvantage to attack for 4. There will be some decks that'll use this, but I suspect most will skip it.
So the green God looks head and shoulders above the rest? Long live Rhonas!
Yup, I'm glad this rule makes sense now. My brother explained the old interaction to me and I was like: what? You select Beck with Brain in a Jar, but then you play the other side because why not.
Made no sense to me, and was just exploiting an unintended consequence of a rule. Nothing clever or fun about it. Just stupid, unintuitive and borderline cheating on newer/inexperienced players.
While on the topic, I dislike split cards in general, partially for rules quirks, and partially for the unappealing visual. And the most recent ones, turning one card on its side... hideous...
They (Wizards) mentioned that every Masterpiece is going to look a little different because of the non-uniform foiling process. I think you're good. Always helps if you buy your cards from reputable sources.

Some of the loose cards look fun. Not fun enough for me to draft/buy any of this garbage, but fun nonetheless.
exile target creature or planeswalker, you gain 2 life. "
After this thread, I'm forever calling this Mulva's Contempt!!
On topic: way too many half added spoilers to enjoy this. Boo to whoever posted the expanded low-res photo.

I was thinking the same thing! Only opponent too, so there's no downside for you. Excellent card for Red aggro.
