  • posted a message on Adding Entertainment Value to Cards?
I was wondering if anyone else has ever taken a card with a particularly enticing name, and added another level of entertainment to it? An example would be, when Kavu Chameleon was in standard, people would sing "Kavu Kavu Kavu Kavu Kavu Chameleon" to the tune of Karma Chameleon by Culture Club when they would play the card. Or anther example would be last night, in a draft tournament, I drafted a Cradle to Grave, and I had a lot of fun whenever I played it because I would say "I DMX that creature," referencing the movie Cradle 2 the Grave with Jet Li and DMX.

    Anyone got any of these?

Hi, I don't know if this has already been asked (and since i don't know the name of the tournament in question, I can't search it), but I was wondering if someone had a list somewhere of all the player created cards to come out of that one tournament where the winner gets to design a card and have his picture on it? At the moment only know of three: Shadowmage Infiltrator, Avalanche Riders, and Rootwater Thief. I would love to find the rest of them, thanks.

Does anyone remember what Pandreadnought decks look like (using 4 pandemonium and 4 phyrexian dreadnought)? I told my friend about it and he is really interested in it, however I totally forget how one works (besides the two already mentioned cards).
    Thanks

    Hi guys,

I've come with another version, trying to keep the playable cards, while adding some cheap others.

    HERE IT IS:

If you want easy acess to Hellbent, a cool option is Jagged Poppet, usually a cheap card with a great beadown result. Galvanic Arc can be used as well for first strike plus damage. You can also think about Scorched Rusalka, for improved damage.

I've tried to keep it Ravnica since i noticed that most cards are from this set, so i suppose you may have easier acess to those cards. And i've tried to keep it into cheap cards as well.

Hope those suggestion can help you.

Wow thanks so much this looks great-I will show my friend ASAP!
While I don't think it will hold up against the decks of the rest of the group (I have one very old deck, while the rest spend a lot on newer cards), it will definitely make him far better than what he has now. Thanks bunches.

Also this will give him a better platform with which to begin incorporating Mondu's suggestions.

@ mondu the fat_ I totally agree about the furnace I believe I threw mine in my furance to stay warm last winter.
@Damnosus- the fetch lands from onslaught are quite expersive and not really necessary, run Teramorphic expanse instead, but it all depends on your budget. Also I probably wouldn't run that many wasteland in deck, 2 or 3 but not 4 it takes away from you mana base as well. In you original deck list you had Plague Sliver- KEEP IT. It is a 5/5 for 4 that only makes you take 1 every upkeep. With black sacrificing life total for power is very common.

As far as the upgraded deck list that Mondu made up (thanks by the way), I doubt my friend will want to put in the money to make it. I think basically he is looking for commons that he can either get easily, or that the rest of the group will give him to upgrade his deck.

Thus if anyone could write a list with the suggested commons (I have very little time at the moment), I would appreciate it-I need something that I can present him with. Otherwise I will do it in a few days (I will post it for more comments though).

Thanks for the input, though what she be removed for said cards (the common ones)?

Also might a furnace of rath (a friend is willing to give it to him) fit in-and for what?

So my friend wanted to join in some of the magic games my social circle has been having, but before he does he wants to fix his deck up a bit. All of us are taking a look at it, but I figured that it wouldn't hurt to post it on this forum as well (as you folks are far more experienced/knowledgeable than we are).
Basically what he is looking for is a cheap (I stress cheap) way to fix his deck, so that it is both more fluid, and focused (it is kind of all over the place at the moment). Cards can be from any set (we are a casual group so sets are not a bit deal). Also if anyone could suggest possible rares that he might consider adding in time that would help as well. Ok here it is:

Like I said, it is kinda all over the place. My one and only suggestion was for him to get 4 Terminate. Any help would be much appreciated (especially as it will prompt him to play with us more often). Oh and just for the record, leave the Snow-Covered lands in: he likes having one of each cause he thinks it is funny :p.

It is definately looking better. I see a potential problem in your wishboard though. You use Cunning Wish (2U) to get Quash/Last Word (2UU) and you are looking at a 7 mana counter spell. At this point it is almost worth looking into Commandeer (arguably better than Desertion). Or putting cards like Remand or Memory Lapse in those spots so you only need 5 mana.

You could always put one Orim's Chant in the board to go on a Scepter.

OH WOW! I have never seen Commandeer before. I am totally getting rid of desertion for it! (I always figured desertion was a very situational card-I mostly used it for laughs/fun-Commandeer suddenly makes things much more deadly)
As for Quash and Last Word, I will see what I can do with those. I only liked Last Word because it helped against control decks (and even if I didn't wish for it I could still side it in games 2 and 3). They were really necessary against all the Stasis I would play against. If you can think of a better card vs. Stasis, please fill me in, because I play it a lot, and I hate that deck!
Quash is more of a "look what I did to your favorite instant" card (bwahahahaha), I can see taking it out. Orim's Chant looks like a really tasty swap (especially with the Sceptors). My one question would be why would I switch it for Memory Lapse or Remand? Is there anything interesting with those other than stall cards? Just curious.

Ok I am definitely warming up to stifle. How does it stop a storm combo though (storm is one of the newer abilities that I am not familiar with the nuances of)?

-Along the same lines though, might my deck benefit from an orim's chant?-its always been a card that I have considered.

I am also beginning to warm up to dropping the story circle: I figure that gushes would probably speed my deck up, meaning that I wouldn't fall victim to being placed in a position where the story circle is necessary (this usually occurs when I fall into a position where I am simply overwhelmed by creatures).

As for red burn, I don't see too much of it. Actually the one deck that I saw way to much of was Stasis. Thus my inclusion of Seal of Cleansing (before I ran disenchants), and Last Word.

    my changes are as follows

    -1 Soothsaying
    -1 Recall
    to get to 60 cards

    -2 Thwart
    -1 Story Circle
    -1 Morphling
    +4 Gush
You only need 2 morphlings and Gush fuels the Masticore.

    -2 Faerie Conclave
    -1 Plains
    -1 Island
    +4 Flooded Strand
Deck thinning is tech. and it can fetch a Tundra.

I don't think Light of Day sould be in the board. It looks like a Wishboard setup, so maybe Stifle in its place.

You have some interesting ideas Pokerbob1, thanks for the input. Just to add my own questions/comments on your decisions:

    Making the deck 60 cards:
Yea I understand the need for this-I mean it does help when calculating percentages and whatnot. I must admit I have never understood why it is necessary to have exactly 60 cards... But whatever, better players than I know what they are talking about. The choices to cutting it down are pretty good too. Recall has never really been a great card in the deck: I am actually not totally sure why it is in there. I must say though I really did have a great time with it during a multiplayer game: I pulled a balance/zuran orb combo (sacrificing all of my lands, gaining lots of life and making my two opponents sacrifice all their lands). Then later in the game I recalled the balance and did it again. Needless to say my opponents were not very happy Grin (I got whomped by both of them the next game).
As for Soothsaying, I must say I will miss the card. It has really helped in many games (setting up my deck and whatnot), however I can understand how it is somewhat of a deadweight.

    4 Gushes:
Very Interesting decision. I rather like it, though I am not sure how much I like what I would have to take out. The thwarts can go (they are good, but I think the Gushes have more roles, and won't sit in my hand). The Morphling I am not so sure about simply because I have had plenty of games where I run out of creatures, and without a recall that is a very bad thing, as I don't like relying on decking to defeat my opponent (though I have won many times by doing that). However the one I question the most is the story circle. I don't know how many games that card has saved my butt in, but it has been a lot. It is just so useful. Feel free to persuade me otherwise-I am just curious to hear your thoughts on why those cards specifically.

    4 Flooded Strainds:
I honestly don't know the appeal of these land fetch cards: yes they thin the deck and whatnot, but I don't know if I would really want to get rid of conclaves for them. I have beaten lots of people with the faeries, plus they make a great early threat against counter decks. Again, feel free to persuade me otherwise (just looking for thought processes for these decisions).

    2 Stifles:
Ok agreed, I have no idea why I have light of days in my sideboard. I have never used them, and I have never played a game where I was like "hmm...maybe I should use them." That being said, I am not sure how good stifles are. Are there other cards I could think about, or could you at least explain what is so good about stifle?

    Again thanks for your input!

    Hello folks,
Though I started playing Magic when Revised came out, I really have not touched the game in several years. I know nothing of most of the new sets, and I sold off most of my rares (still got loads of commons though :-/) ages ago. However I still have my one main deck that I have always liked to play with.

As of late, I have been playing Magic from time to time with it, however for the most part I get pretty beat down (mostly because I have no idea about all these new abilities and such). Thus I am hoping that the community here (especially those that play/have played older formats) might help me revamp my deck a bit so that it might become a tighter, more focused deck, and so that I can update any cards that have been shoved aside by ones that do the same thing but better.

As far as rewriting my deck is concerned, there are a couple of things that you (meaning anyone willing to give advice/comments) should keep in mind. First off, this is for casual play (thus the forum I am posting in) so I have no mind to make this deck any other format than Vintage (or as I still like to call it, Type 1). Second, while I do have a bunch of older cards, I am not looking to spend crazy amounts of money to upgrade this deck (power cards are beyond me and I do not really care). I am basically willing to pay $20-30 dollars a single card (maybe proxy first and slowly buy them), but really no more than that.

Ok without further ramblings here is the deck:

Well there it is. Rather than go into a long and lengthy explanation on each card (cause there are a bunch in there that I am sure a lot of you are going "What-why is he using that?"), just ask me to explain any that you have questions on, and I respond to it. Thank you for any and all advice!
