I heard the guy cheated against me but I was too reeling from all of his savage rips to be focused enough to catch them. I guess I assumed the table judge might be doing his job. Tell your friend that he should speak up next time. I beat dredge (the same guy) twice that day once 2-0 and once 2-1. I got very lucky to win one game 1 as he kept a questionable hand that never came together. The other game 1 he killed me turn 2. After board the matchup is fine and in g3 of the quarters he mulled to 4.

Eye of the wisent is pretty terrible but might become necessary if sonic boom and uw control become excedingly popular. UW blink is actually a very easy matchup if play correctly. You just sit on a martyr of ashes and point burn at their face. They can not effectively balance the damage being dealt to them and the on board threat.

Play Charge its the best option. I struggled on that spot for weeks (the other 56 are set it stone) and 3 charge 1 threaten is best.

    trust me, i know stuff

I am going to write a mini report because I am avoiding studying for a chem test and I want to liven up this forum.

So I have my deck and am all hopped up on red bull and energy pills (courtesy of MichaelJ)

    round 1
Round one I play against mono blue pickles which I think should be a good matchup, as you can just burn their morphs and get in there.
game 1 I get annihilated as he lays a 1st turn desert and I only have 1/1s as creatures. I'm never really into this one and eventually he just flips over a brine. I sideboarded in magus of the moon against a mono colored deck which I found funny. My reasoning was that desert is a beating and he was playing a lot of storage lands. I also just wanted a 2/2. I had a pretty awesome draw and just blow him out. Game 3 he is manascrewed and my sick magus of the moon shuts him out of blue mana. He only has one so cant really do much throughout the game.

    round 2
I played against uw control played by metamorph (I obv didn't know at the time). Game one I remember he had a slightly lackluster draw and his life total seems to have decreased in chunks of 3, so I probably had a goyf. Game 2 was pretty crazy. He played 2 aven riftwatchers, a wrath of god, an oblivion ring, and teferi's moat. So I lost right? Nope. HOLY PIKULA!?!?!?! I was able to eek out a lot of life through thunderblade charge, and he never got a blocker so my mogg fanatic was actually taking chunks out of his life total in 4s.

    round 3
I played against br goblins this round and I think the matchup is pretty good. My guys are more efficient (goyf) and their only trump is the wort engine which is very easy to shut down. Game 1 he gets wort engine online even though I kill 2 of them and he ends up on 3 life. I tried to craig jones a burn spell on the last turn but it wasn't there. Game 2 I think he was slightly mana screwed or something because the life total notes I have written down indicate a blowout. Game 3 I get a martyr of ashes down along with a goyf. After I play the goyf he plays boggart harbringer and gets a tarfire. I immediately know that things are about to get awkward. I charge his harbringer and get in for 3 (2/3 goyf and the martyr). On his next turn he casts tarfire. I assume that he is going to target the martyr because the goyf is a 2/3. It was pretty obvious he didnt know the tarfire would not killa 0/1 goyf because he tutored for it when I only had the goyf. He plays tarfire and I start to bin the martyr when he interjects, "No I'm killing the goyf" This was obviously awkward for a couple of reasons. The goyf was a 2/3 so a shock wasn't going to cut it, and after it resolved the goyf was 4/5. I think he packed it up when I played a 2nd goyf the turn after.

    round 4
I'm paired against ur madness aggro which did not seem that great. Game one I get him down to 5 but continue to draw blanks for many many turns and he stabilizes and starts to beat down with arrogant wurms (or whatever they are called nowadays). I make an all in attack eventually but he as a burn spell to stay alive and win. If he had the burn spell I was dead on his next attack, so I had to make a move and try to make a game of it. The next two games I think i got him woth goyfs and threatening his 4/4s (worms and vexing sphinxe) and then saccing them to big gargadon.

So I'm 4-0 and feeling pretty good eventhough 3/4 of my matches have gone to 3 games. I talk to Alec Nezin about how being 4-0 is pretty awkward because you feel like you should always top 8 form that position but (in an 8 rd tournament) you always get paired against friends and it gets pretty hard. Soooo obv....

    round 5
I play against Alec, who was on ugw blink. Game 1 we both get good draws but he eventually bounces my dudes with cloudskates and gets in damage with fliers, while mucking up the ground. I tell him that I've dropped 3 game ones so far but won them all, so I'm probably going to smash him. He says its not that fitting to trash talk when your down, but I remind him that trash talking when youre up is easy and doing it when your a dog really means something. Game 2 he was mana screwed. Game 3 I play a turn 1 martyr of asher (heh) and on turn 2 am faced with an interesting decision. He has a blue mana and another mana up so he is obviously representing rune snag. I have a goyf in hand but pass the turn after just getting in with the martyr. On the following turns I just continue to play lands and pass the turn. UGW cant actually do anything if you don't make plays. Eventually he taps out in response to me doing something eot (I think throwing some burn at his face) for a venser. I untap with 5 lands in play and play marauders goyf and tarfire his venser. From that position it is hard for ugw to recover. I think this is the only way to play the ugw matchup because in the new format their deck is mostly reactive 1 for 1s (with the exception of mulldrifter). I end up winning this game because he cant really handle my overwhelming board position.

    round 6
I play against Chris Mascioli playing the ub mannequin deck. We are on the same online team so I know his 75 cards. We contemplate drawing but the draw bracket is no good for me so we battle. I know this matchup is pretty bad but I had been running pretty well so I wasnt too worried. Game 1 he stumbles on 2 lands (rough) and I get in enough beats that I am able to burn him out easily by the time he gets up and running. Game 2 I have a very good draw but he holds the fort well with epochrasites and ironfoots while gaining life iwth some bottle gnomes. Eventually I knock him down to four and suspend rift bolt (last card in hand) witht he intention of using megaliths during my upkeep ftw. I was on 6 but wasnt dead for 2 turns. So he draws, and I ask if it was the profane command. It wasn't. It was a mannequin to get back a cloudskate to bounce the megaliths. I can draw a burn spell on my last turn to win but I fail (0/2 in craig jonesing). Game 3 My draw was absurd with 2 ancient grudges for his artifacts (which are the real problem in this matchup) and win on 20.

I double draw and loaf around

    quarterfinals
I am playing against ugw blink again. He mulligans and keeps a 1 lander with a birds on the draw. I play turn one mr fantastic. Fanatic does 1 then kills the birds and he fails to draw lands until it is far too late. Game 2 I play the same way I did agaisnt Alec. I have a martyr out and start baiting my opponent (Bob i think). He counters a fanatic and then a marauders with 2 mystic snakes. I get in with the martyr for the last time until I was going to nuke his snakes (because he had just played a white source for blink) when he flashed in a venser. This play seemed pretty bad as I 3 for 1d him with the martyr and then layed down a goyf. My hand was stacked from holding back so many turns and I think I was holding like 4 burn spells.

    Semifinals
I am playing against Jim Davis who is piloting teachings. Game one is very favorable for rg and I get him to 9 with a gargadon on suspend and he has 4 mana tapped and 4 cards in hand. I think for a while and try to see what is behind Jim's poker face. I probably deliberated for around 3 minutes until I called the bluff and went all in on the gargadon. He flips over the farthest right card in his hand... What a blowout. Nope! He was just trying to scare me. We move to game 2 where I play horrendously and toss any chances of winning away. For some reason I ancient grudged his lens of turn 2 instead of playing a goyf (terrible). There was one point where he slaughter pacted a goyf but had no basic swamps so a magus of the moon would have been gg. Game 3 he crushes me. I felt like I could have won game 2 (or at least made it close) if I played better.

    a good day in all

I actually didn't get to play against elves in the top 8, but I wish I got that pairing. I can't imagine it being hard at all though. All of my cards are excellent against them, and unless they have the nuts they can never really get ahead of me. The sideboard should have four lash out because that card was ABSURD for me all day.

Manabarbs is better if you are expecting a lot of teachings and the ub 187 deck, but magus was right for states. Magus is good versus those decks but is absolutely insane against ugw blink, which was one of the most popular decks at ny states. This deck destroys elves, merfolk, and kithikin. It's only bad matchup is the ub 187 deck and maybe some weird outliers I am not recalling right now. Treetop village is not right in a deck like this with only 21 lands and not too many green sources. Thunderblade charge was awesome for me. It is another burn spell, which the deck desperately needed, and can sometimes be reused. I think this is the best deck in the format, but I am pretty biased mainly because I don't really lose with it.

I have barely drafted this format at all bceause Ive been lazy with school and other stuff. We test a lot, but all of it is with proxies or online. You would be surprised by how few cards we all have lol. And yeah, Josh is very scrubby. I couldnt really get cards in time so I will just be playing rg this saturday, but if anyone has 4 thorn of the amethyst or mana barbs that would be greatly appreciated.

    Decks to consider
    1. rg
    2. elementals
    3. ug
    4. ub (many variants include teachigns, haakon, snow)

i can guarantee turbo fog will not do well because its pretty terrible and actually cant ever win a game against any deck after board.
