Its a sad day when your son comes home to you saying "I'm afraid to be Christian dad."

Yes, because Christians are so persecuted in this country...

Instead of complaining that we need to put "Christ" back in "Christmas", Christians should be more concerned with putting the "Christ" back in "Christian". If you need a place to start, I suggest Pope Francis as a model.

You know what's much more scary? The idea that there is nothing after this life. When you die, there is no person waiting for you, asking you why you stole from the cookie jar. No, there is nothing, and not even that, since nothing is a concept which, just as anything else, has no meaning anymore. Every memory, idea and thought gone forever. Your idea of consequences for your actions after death pales into nothing compared to death.

    Why is this scary?

I don't understand how people who believe in a talking snake, an invisible sky god, resurrection, alchemy, magic, angels, demons, creation, etc. are any more reasonable than someone who believes the Scientology claims.

Well that's just silly. You make judgements about people all of the time. It's unavoidable, and it's not all bad.

Not all opinions or ideas are worthy of tolerance or respect.

I read the part about the wedding... I dont see the big deal.

I think you are trying to create an issue when there isnt one.

She liked the idea of creating the old time plantation feel which includes but is not limited to having African American's as serving staff... Again... would it be racist to have a black man play a slave in a movie production?

I just can't grasp how you can think that's a relevant comparison...How is this so complicated?

I dont get how wanting to have old fashion southern wedding is racist.

Have you ever watched an old episode of Dallas from the 80s? Even there all of the servants on the show are black... What if I was a huge Dallas fan and wanted a Dallas themed wedding would it be racist to want Black wait staff then?

Because when we watch a movie like Django Unchained or The Patriot, where black men, women, and children as paid as actors to play the part of slaves, we are not doing so because we want to relive that era. We don't view that area with a sense of nostalgia. It is done to be historically accurate.

The problem is that she wants to relive the days of slavery in her fantasy. Now, this isn't a crime, and is not deserving of punishment by law, but it is certainly deserving of judgement.

    Quote from Fluffy_Bunny
You are taking an extremely narrow minded view that anyone that appreciates the old south must appreciate it because it was racist.

No, but she obviously feels that it is a much needed accessory. One would have thought, given her profession, that she's make a comment about recreating the cuisine that would be found at an fancy dinner in the old south. One does not need to relive and pine for slaves (actors though they may be) to wait on their every need at this dinner.

(Anytime you'd like to debate like an adult, I'm sure we'd all welcome the change.)

His voiced boomed throughout the land as Mr. Squaresville trembled, tears streaming down his face. Throughout all the hills and valleys, the final words of his fiery burn echoed like the repeat strikes of a mighty hammer on crumbling armor. WELCOME THE CHANGE... COME THE CHANGE... THE CHANGE... CHANGE...

"Please!" Mr. Squaresville pleaded, "Make it stop! You win! You're the best!" He falls to his knees, submitting to the will of the Mighty Cervid. Scores of beautiful women swarm the triumphant warrior.

"Oh, Cervid!" They swooned, "Your superior forum presence is so manly!" "I love you, Cervid!" "Send me a private message, oh will you please Master Cervid?"

The Mighty Cervid grinned, his dominance over the forum now spreading wide throughout the land. He kicks the weak Mr. Squaresville in the chest, chuckling. Just then, the dark clouds parted way, and a chorus of angels singing "Sweet Home Alabama" filled the air. Through the shimmering beam of light, Jeff Foxworthy descended, riding a chariot drawn by magnificent and elegant deer. No, better yet! Drawn by John Deer riding mowers! As he reaches the ground, his gilded armor glowing like God's own gold front tooth, Jeff Foxworthy extends his arms toward Cervid.

"Oh Mighty Cervid!" His voice thundering from behind his divine mustache, "You have proven yourself most worthy this day! Kneel before me, and accept my gift to you!" Cervid knelt in silent pride, stoic and powerful. From inside of his luscious mullet, Jeff Foxworthy removes a jeweled crown. Onlookers fell to a hush, each one of them in paralyzed awe at the beauty of the treasure. "Cervid!" Announced Jeff Foxworthy, "Because of your courageous campaign against well-meaning strangers on the internet, and because of your infallible rebuking of any and all valid reasons to strive for a vegan lifestyle, I am bestowing upon you the highest honor I can manifest! With this crown, I name you, Mighty Cervid, KING OF THE HICKS!"

"KING OF THE HICKS!" the crowd cheered gleefully. Children jumped with glee, hair-chested lumberjacks shed single tears of joy, and many of the women around Cervid fainted, falling into beds of newly-sprung tulips. He was unsure if this fainting was due to his newfound title (and the masculinity that accompanied it) or his body odor, but it didn't matter any more. He had finally become King of the Hicks.

"Wait, King of the Hicks?" Mr. Squaresville sputtered, rising to his feet. "Ohhhhhh! What a relief! For a second I thought that I was actually potentially wrong about something! Turns out I was just arguing with an unreasonable hick that whole time! Well! No use trying to argue with an unreasonable hick! This place is a hell and I'm outta here!" He strolls away, whistling a Deafheaven song and winking at passerby.

Jeff Foxworthy tells "You might be a redneck" jokes for six hours and Cervid laughs at all of them.

Give me an infraction. Ban me. Throw hair at me. I do not care. I wash my hands of this. Get at me when your frontal lobe develops. Rot In Piss. Peace.

You're right. A diet that abstains from relying on the exploitation and slaughter of animals is, in fact, far from a diet that would abstain from relying on the exploitation and slaughter of animaOH WAIT NO IT'S NOT.

Or, continue to nitpick and find **** reasons as to why you have completely proven that a being a vegan is a joke. Tell me that I am not vegan because I killed a spider on the ground while hiking. Tell me that I do not need to drive a car to get from point A to point B, and that squirrel I hit was because I made the choice to. Good job, I am a fraud. You got me. Please, continue to fight my personal views and the views of other vegans. Continue to tell me to get off my high horse. Because bacon, or whatever.

The moral reason is a joke. It makes you feel better, but it shouldn't. I'm not posting because I'm sticking up for bacon (what nonsense is this?), I'm posting because at least one of your reasons for being vegan is ridiculous. You are eating things that have to be killed, or are still alive while you're eating them. You choose to draw an arbitrary line at the cute and fuzzies, but it's ultimately meaningless. Again, I'm sure it makes you feel better, but it shouldn't.

Read as: 'YOU'RE GOING TO HAVE A NEGATIVE IMPACT ON THE LIVES OF OTHERS AT SOME POINT, SO YOU MIGHT AS WELL NOT TRY TO MAKE LESS OF A NEGATIVE IMPACT OVERALL. CRUELTY IS FINE AS LONG AS YOU'RE CONSISTENT. AS SOON AS YOU TAKE STEPS TO BE LESS CRUEL IN GENERAL YOU'RE DOING SOMETHING WRONG.'

It's not clear that it is a less negative impact, though. My point isn't that being vegan lacks any value. However, it applies its 'less negative' impact arbitrarily and without much thought. If you were constructing a diet to have as little impact on animal suffering as possible, vegan would not be it (far from it, in fact).

Vegans want the line drawn at the kingdom, what about arthropods??

Arthropods are animals. They don't draw a clear line anywhere. It's arbitrary and meaningless. It's about blissfully ignorant guilt-free eating.

    Quote from Degduar Marte
Sources on this? Please prove how more animals are killed in the process of farming plants. Just because you say "probably" and continue to think it doesn't make it true.

No one knows the exact numbers, because it would be impossible to figure out how many mice, voles, rabbits, birds, insects, etc. are killed as a result of farming. However, if you want some reading:

In my 7 years of driving I have hit one animal. This does not debunk veganism. You're seriously grasping at straws here buddy. I don't drive through the rainforest with an animal scorecard.

You avoid hitting insects? Running over spiders? That's AMAZING! (more likely is that you don't actually know what the word 'animal' means...)

    Quote from Degduar Marte
Unfortunately yes some animals may be killed and displaced due to farming, but you are insane to compare that to the millions of animals killed each year due to factory farming and slaughterhouses. That's not even close.

Actually, it's probably more animals that are killed in the process of farming plants, not less. Just because you don't see it happening doesn't mean it isn't.

    Quote from Degduar Marte
As for myself, my vegetables, fruits, grains, etc. come from locally grown organic farms. Some of the foods I buy come from farms that utilize IPM. Others are very conscientious of the pesticides they use. I know a fair amount of vegans that are careful of this too. I know you might be thinking "gotcha you stupid vegan!" right now, but nice try. As I said before, you're trying a little too hard.

They still kill millions upon millions of animals, or do they not matter because they're not big and furry?

Look, you can be a vegan for some health reasons (though this is debatable), or because you just enjoy it more, but you can't be one for moral reasons, unless you are ignorant (willfully or otherwise) of the animals killed to support your vegan or vegetarian diet.

Such as...? At least back this up because I don't think you know what you're talking about.

You mean examples of animals killed?

How about all the animals that you run over or slam into with your car every day (arthropods, mammals, birds, etc.)?

How about all of the mice, voles, birds, and rabbits run over by tractors, or displaced due to loss of habitat, during the process of farming a land for grain or other plants?

How about all the animals killed or displaced because of runoff from heavily fertilized farms? Or the animals killed by pesticide?

Taking the life of a harmless and/or defenseless animal is, at the very least, not a kind thing to do. And that's being generous with semantics. This is the moral reasoning behind veganism. If condoning the slaughter of another living and feeling creature to enable your taught and preferred (but not necessary or mandatory) diet is in line with your ethical code, this reason obviously isn't good enough. And that's fine, as long as you're willing to concede to the point that your burger/milkshake/leather belt came into your possession by means of a not particularly kind process.

You are either personally responsible, or indirectly responsible, for the deaths animals whether you're a vegan or not. Just because you choose to ignore all the animals killed in the process of agriculture doesn't mean it doesn't happen.

You kill many animals every time you take a drive in your car.

The amount of livestock slaughtered for consumption pales in comparison to the animals we kill through other activities in our lives.

There's nothing about being vegan or vegetarian that is more moral that eating meat. You're still killing animals and other living things.

Humans are not able to make our own nutrients, as plants and other organisms do, so we must consume other living organisms to survive.

    Deal with it.

If you really don't want to kill animals, then you'd best grow your own food, because more animals are killed in the farming of grain than they are in slaughterhouses. You would be responsible for less animal death by eating free-range cattle than you would eating corn, wheat, and many other vegetables.

Also, fats and oils aren't just good for you, they're essential.

Be vegetarian if it makes you feel better, or you don't like how meat tastes, just don't think you're doing it because you're saving lives or avoiding the slaughter of animals.

Additionally, the ability to feel pain is not the same as the ability to experience it. Many animals can receive pain signals, but they do not experience it emotionally (they don't suffer). It takes higher brain function to suffer (many mammals probably have the ability to suffer; fish certainly do not). Where's your outrage at the slaughter of plants, which are living things that also respond and interact with the world they live in?
