    Quote from vatechguy
Dang. I was gonna state how solid the Moxen were as a cycle. OMG

I think maybe what the OP probably means though, it's the first cycle in a long time that anyone has gotten really excited about playing with. And this is for the most part true.

When moxes first came out people though they where trash.

I believe when the titans came out people knew how good they where

it also might be because you know how your friends play because you have played so many times. When you play people you don't know you make mistakes

  • posted a message on How could Magic get rid of land screw?
Vs Use a system of not getting resourced screwed, but it made the game about using each resource each turn on the biggest creature possible.

I don't think it would happen, but not getting Guarantee accessed to your resources every turn is part of the magic

Can't remember Richard Garfield ever saying he set out to design a a game of skill? I thought it's first intention was to be a game to be played with, whatever cards you have been lucky enough to open in your packs and traded with your friends.

I like it the way it is (a game of skill and a bit of luck)

Poker has something to do with luck, but the players with the best skill almost always end up in the final table.

    Double-post merged.

  • posted a message on Magic tournament ratings are tainted and irrelevant.
    Quote from Rar
    Hey folks,

I think that the ability to drop from a Magic tournament and leave your rating completely unscathed makes ratings illegitimate and worthless. If you go to a Constructed tourney and you find the matchups are bad for you, you can bail with no harm done. If you draft a bad deck or pull a bad Limited pool, you can leave - no harm, no foul.

I think in order for tournament ratings to really mean anything, dropping should not be a route to preserve one's rating.

I was concerning myself with getting my Limited rating up, but then once I saw that I could artificially prevent it from falling by bailing out of bad drafts, I decided two things:

    a) Many people with high limited ratings have done this to improve their rating, and therefore their ratings are at least partly illegitimate.

    b) Since the ratings are illegitimate, I could care less about mine. I fight to the bitter end of any sealed pool, any draft, no matter how poorly I drafted or how bad my luck was that day. Should I therefore be considered a "worse player" than someone who bails at the first sign of trouble?

These ratings are trivialized by players being allowed to drop without penalty.

    Thoughts?

    Quick thought. Your wrong.

I can only talk from a limited prospective because that is my main format. IF a get a jank pool from my sealed.

Getting my head smashed in isn't fun. Why should I continue to be punished because my pool is crap.

The people who think ratings don't matter are mostly the casual crowd with a good rating to begin with. There the same people who complain when someone brings a "evil" netdeck to a FNM and win.

These are the same people who think that players who play to win are not playing magic right. They are thinking the amature way of playing magic is the true way of magic and the only way you can have fun.

Most of the really good players don't play in 8k or 16k events because it's not worth the risk of losing.

Are you going to punish these players for not even showing up to protect there rating.

It's a legit tactic to keep your rating up. I see nothing wrong with it.

It's like when a football team spikes the ball near the end of the game. They are doing to keep there score above the opposing team and not letting the other team have the ball back.

    Quote from sirpsychosexy
Some friends and I were talking recently and this topic came up. One friend said that fast zombies are blasphemy and they should never run. The other said that running zombies are scarier and more menacing than the slow wandering type. I personally don't care. Zombies are cool no matter what. Its pretty hard to go wrong with zombies. What do all of you think?

    blashpemy?

have you ever seen the original 1968 version of Night of the Living Dead. The first zombie that kills Barbra's Brother was almost spiriting after her.

Man tell your friend to know the history of zombies before saying anything :p

  • posted a message on More skill? Draft or Constructed?
    Quote from Qester
Hey guys just want to get your opinions on what you think takes more skill Type 2 draft or constructed and why?

My friend and I have been debating this and I argue that draft is too random- depending on what cards are opened and passed could have a huge influence on the quality of your deck and as such a huge influence you have on your outcome for the day. Likewise with constructed all things being equal it test who the better magic player is with the variances of what deck they decided to bring and what cards are drawn (both those exist in draft + more).

My friend argues that draft really tests your deck building skills and that the best player will almost always win. From personal experience I've had drafts where I've been outplayed in the tournament but due to the quality of the cards I was passed I was able to do very well. Yet, in other tournaments I played very well but due to the quality of the cards I was able to draft I really didn't stand a chance.

What do you guys think? What format shows more magic skill?

Like someone else said you can't compare the both. They are two differnt beast with two different set of skills.

The skill to read what color the player next to you is almost useless in constructed.

The ability to read the meta is almost useless in draft.

Deck building is really different in draft then it is constructed.

A skilled drafter would be a horrible at constructed without any of the skills and the practice of constructed and the same the other way around.

This is why most players play or enjoy one format over the other

    Quote from skittensro
I have never been to a PTQ before and I have been informed that there is going to be one in my city at the end of this month.

I have a few questions because I can not fin much on the wizards site and there are some things that I doubt they would have on there anyways.

1.) How much does it cost to enter? -- 25$
    2.) What will I need when I show up? -- 9:00am Saturday the 27th
3.) Do I have to sign up somewhere?
4.) What are some things I should keep in mind? -- All or no foils

    Etc.

well a PTQ is a higher rank and regulated match. Things you get away with at FNM is a No NO.

Don't play sloppy and play by the strictest rules. People will call judges, not to be a jerk, but because they have to.

It's fun but a differnt experince

I am all for chaning mana burn. Seriously how often in game does mana burn really make a differnce. Any compentent tournament player doesn't take mana burn

The only put who are hurt by mana burn are new players. In casual games most players can take back moves that would cause mana burn. But a new player that loses a game because of mana burn can turn him off to magic.

Next not having mana burn open ups new option in card design which I like

  • posted a message on Net-decking...is it "wrong"?
Seems like some people have this way your "suppose" to play magic. Certin weird rules that they convince as rules all people should play.

This comes up mainly in casual groups. Like some well ban burn decks because there not fun or cheese.

Net decks fall under this category. Net deck is against there rules for whatever reason. At FNM you can't play such and such decks because there from the net. Net decking isn't real magic

These people should stay casual and not worry about sanctioned tournaments including FNM.

For good or bad FNM over the years have become more compative.

    Quote from Edghyatt
I guess in the big picture it all boils down to the fact that the game is half luck-based and half skill-based. Depending on the cards available in a metagame, the overall environment will lean toward a predominant side. This time it's aggro's turn. This too shall pass, and I'm still awaiting, with some certainty, the moment when control dominates Standard again.

the game is not based half-luck. In fact luck plays very little, but still does play a role in this game.

You could say poker is all about luck but you see the same players finsihing high, and the same can be said for magic. You see the same players finishing high in most big tournies

no keep them like that. Most of green critters are beast unless there natural critters. Adding baloths as a subtype would have to make changes to other cards. Just keep it the way it is

  • posted a message on How does one define what's broken and should be banned?
    Quote from SirBruce
Way back in the Stone Age when M:tG first came out, you were supposed to randomly pick a card out of your deck at the start of your game. This was your "ante". If you lost the game, your opponent now owned that card. If you won the game, you now owned THEIR ante card. This was a great way to "share the wealth" -- if your opponent had a Black Lotus and you didn't, they would have to risk possibly losing it if they played with it.

Unfortunately, once players realized that the rarer cards were worth a lot of money, and deck tuning to win became more important than playing for fun, players became reluctant to risk their hard-earned cards. So they stopped playing for ante casually. WotC made an early decision (arguable a wrong one) not to have ante in official tournaments, either, so players stopped playing for ante entirely. (There was some concern that in some states playing for ante amounted to gambling.)

Several cards, called "ante cards", were printed with specific effects that modified the card that was anted, or added additional ante cards, etc. when played. With no more ante, these cards were no longer legal to play, despite being some of the coolest cards printed at the time.

How was not playing ante in tournys a wrong decesion. It was a great decision. Many people would be mad enternting a tournament a losing there prized cards and lose customers in the long wrong.

UNder tournament rulesyour deck would also be illegal once you lost a match you had only a 59 card deck.

Getting rid of ante was one of the more obvious moves to make. I can see parents calling other parents to get back a magic card a kid lost in a magic game
