So more hosing of red, the weakest colour in magic and unnecessary protection for walkers that are already too hard to get rid of. All in the name of dumbing things down for Timmy.

    It does not hose red.

It is not "for Timmy" it is to simplify the order of operations to damage a Planeswalker to make the process easier for users of MtGO/Arena.

All Standard decks lose most of their value after rotation. The difference here is Challenger Decks last only 6 months in Standard.
If this works out into bringing more people to play Standard, LGSs will profit from Challenger Decks sales, tournament entry payments, and other accessories, like sleeves and stuff.

Expecting this product to do all it's meant to do and on top of that to generate more profits for LGSs after rotation is asking way too much.

Let's just hope LGSs understand the big picture here and don't sell this product above MSRP.

It is also WotC's first try at the concept. Better to test the waters close to a rotation to minimize any potentially impactful missteps.

    Probably luck/chance.

But it would be interesting if every box was nearly identical, lol

Its nice art, and an auto 2 for 1 if you are doing it with spells, but thats just Wizards 'post modern' design for ya.

I'm not shocked its running $30.

EDIT: I should say, I dont believe any Standard card should get north of $20, even that seems a stretch when you are ACCEPTING that your deck will rotate out and be 'worthless' if you dont play anything but Standard.

'Modern is just so expensive' they said, buying into $400 Standard decks season after season...

Agreed. People dictate the price of the decks because they are willing to pay X for powerful cards. If people stop buying, the price goes down.

Have you seen my posts lately? I think I may even rival the depression bomb from Ranma 1/2, but then again when wizards gives you Masters 25 and 2+ years of complete garbage standard it kind of wears at you. :p

Yes, why give us one homelands when we can have twice the homelands while being pummeled with a flying motor home named after a dead guy and piloted by a random god we have never heard of. I don't think that happened in standard but it's how I'm going to remember this particular moment in time.

Then we had "YAAAAR PIRATES" that were tasty snacks for dinosaurs.
I mean, I honestly don't mind some of the things they explored in lots of their recents sets, like shadows over innistrad, Amonketh and Ixalan. I like some of the themes, some of the cards, etc. What annoys me is that they're still focusing most of the power in creatures, and usually powerful mythic creatures... Scarab God, Hazoret, Emrakul, Ulamog. And now everything that is good and efficient has to be banned because there are no answers to it. Ban copter, ban reflector mage, ban cat-combo, etc. Where are the good SPELLS, is what I want to know. They basically forgot almost all their other card types to favor a more creature-centric card game.

And now here comes Dominaria and they keep giving me this bull*****? "Hey, wanna have lightning bolts? Great! Play some wizard creatures!" "Wanna have a four-mana wrath? Sure! I will staple that in a mythic enchantment that takes a turn to go off" "What about powerful spells with unique effects? Sure! Just have a legendary card, mostly just a creature, into play!"

For crying out loud. Give me some unconditional good removal. Something that doesn't cost 4 mana to cast at instant speed. But no, let's keep going the direction we're going and stocking the plane chock-full of big clunky legends so vorthos and timmy both get happy, and we move along with the worst standard format ever.

Yeah but we have only seen the cards that needed rulings, there are still tons of cards out there that we have no seen.

Also, Llanowar Elves is back. So that's a step in the right direction!

Where was it that WotC announced a new format?

I mean, it's obvious they would. I just don't remember any sort of announcement as such.

They have not announced a new format. But there has been a lot of speculation that WotC will announce a new format in the near future (near being relative, it could be a few years away, honestly (the only thing we know is that they will eventually pull the trigger, we just do not know when)).

I've played 'fetchless frontier' and it devolves to RG Aggro too quickly. Fetches allow for 3 colour decks to exist and compete, with that kind of thing. I mean its really about what you prefer I suppose. To me, I would be sad to lose 3 colour decks (UWR, Jund, Esper, etc etc) because the mana was too poor or slow.

Why do anything but blitz aggro?

WotC disagrees with you. I could go either way. The nice thing about starting with Khans is that WotC could ban the Fetchlands, then if things go poorly, they can unban them (and thereby avoiding reprinting them in Standard, something WotC really does not want to do).

One of the biggest benefits to a Fetchland is fetching a Shockland (since it taps for 2 different colors right away). The nice thing about Post-Modern is that Shock Lands are not in the format, so the power of Fetchlands are diminished some. You would need to fetch Basics, Battle Lands or the bicycle lands. I am pretty ok with this, to be honest.

Maybe I am weird but I think 50 bucks for a card that you need 4 copies of is pretty gosh darn ridiculous.

True, they could just ban fetchlands and set the start point at Kahns or origins. However, I'm thinking they may start one that has a later start due to the rules change.

If they do start later than Khans, then I imagine they will wait a few more years before announcing the new format. Most people would derisively call that version of Modern 2.0 "Standard and Friends" :p

No fetches? No format. Why would we want to accept terrible mana, and all the stunting that would do to potential archetype growth?

Ehhhh, I am not the biggest fan of Fetchlands. They make life a little too easy.

I definitely feel like WotC wants to create Modern 2.0 (or, more honestly, Legacy 3.0). I think an interesting discussion would be where would WotC put the arbitrary start point for such a format?

When Modern was announced, the format had 26 expansion sets and a bunch of Core Sets. If the new Modern 2.0 format did the same (and it was announced around when Dominaria comes out), then it would go all the way back to Scars of Mirrodin. Starting with a Mirrodin block has a nice symetry to it, with how the first real block of Modern was Mirrodin. However, there are some really potent cards and strategies in that block. Do we really want this new format to start its life off with Infect? Not sure.

Modern 1.0 had an arbitrary start date when Magic released new card frame. If we did the same for Modern 2.0, then the start date would be Magic 2015. To me, that feels better but I don't really see the point is arbitrarily starting a set when new card frames came out, since all reprints going forward have the new frame (so the visual distinction is much less obvious today than it was in 2011 when Modern was announced).

In some ways, I feel like starting with Battle for Zendikar would be best, since it is the first block that broke with the traditional block structure (which would eventually lead to the dismantling of Blocks entirely). It is the tipping point when Magic stopped being convinced of in the way it had since the Mirage block (way back in 1996). It is at the point when Magic changed, for better or worse. Having said that, I kind of feel like even this is not perfect, since that means there will only be 11 sets in the format (including Dominaria but not including core sets). That is definitely too few.

To be dead honest, I always go back to Khans or Magic: Origins as being the most likely. If they do go with Khans Block, they will likely just ban the Fetchlands and be done with it.

This rules change is the one thing that got me thinking maybe they are going to start a new non rotating format. There's just too many cards getting impacted at once and they may make a temporary format that contains the cards they've updated.

A post-Modern format is coming, at some point but I think this change has more to do with Arena than anything else. The shortening of a cards' text makes it alot easier to display on the digital cards.

They are not going to mass reprint all legendary cards.

If and when a legendary card is selected to be reprinted, it will receive the new border.

For a guy who has been looking at the Rumor Mill and/or internet for spoilers since Exodus, it feels wrong to have 142 cards already. I don't have much to add beyond that, just feeling bummed.

In all fairness, prior to this leak we had not seen ONE card from Dominaria. Not ONE single spoiler. That's a little ridiculous, at least to me.

We do not usually receive spoilers for new sets until a few weeks before that set releases. Dominaria is still 7 weeks away. Masters 25 has not released. WotC would never intentionally spoil the next, next set before the next set even comes out (especially not on this scale). It kills the interest for the next set and dilutes the hype for the next, next set.

    Where is skyship?

there is 130 other cards, It can be a legendary artifact somewhere those.

No Vehicles in the Fac is a no for it as a vehicle.
In the Ixalan release notes vehicles where mentioned as a returning mechanic. The Dominaria release notes lack such info. Still hoping for a Weatherlight, would be a great opportunity!

At some point they start to consider the mechanic something that is expected to appear regularly enough that it doesn't get explicit mention anymore. Have Vehicles become as 'normal' as Equipment now that they don't need explicit reference as a set mechanic anymore?

They have been upgraded to deciduous which means they can be used in any set but shouldn't be excepted all the time (see Hybrid mana, DFC, curses, colored artifacts and protection).

EDIT: Hate to say Dominaria has done the legendary theme better than Kamigawa, giving us less of a reason to revisit the plane.

MARO Has all but confirmed that WotC would most likely just make a new Japanese-themed plane rather than go back to Kamigawa.

This set doesn't miss the mark, its MSRP does. No more $10 packs. That's the real problem here.
    Agreed.

People would be buying tons of packs if this were 4-7 dollars, rather than 10 dollars a pack.
