I responded to Gavin in a lengthy email, but the crux of it is that the theme (whether draft archetypes or flavour) should not override the need for staples coming back (such as Scapeshift and fetchlands) and that I sincerely hope Modern Masters comes back with alternating themes in off-years or summer releases.

Courier7 posted a message on Is pauper going to be the next big format?Posted in: Magic GeneralQuote from Mig2014 »
Are they doing it because Pauper is hot at the moment, or are they trying hard to make it look hot at the moment? I don’t know. All I know is this was all done at the same time pauper cards were spiking like crazy.
Probably both. The real question is this: is Pauper being hot right now a bad thing? I would say that the answer is "no"--it gets people to tournaments, it generates interest in cards or sets people might not have looked at before, people enjoy playing it, etc. The fact that some people are going to make money in the secondary market because of Pauper's current popularity is irrelevant--some people are *always* going to make money in the secondary market regardless of what is going on. -

TBuzzsaw posted a message on plainswalkers is imbalanced againstr white manaUh what? Nothing like that exist with any Jace planeswalker card not to mention Jace doesn't have any cards where he attacks.Posted in: Magic General
EDIT: I think I see what the confusion is. You're thinking of the mechanic plains walk, which gives creatures the ability to be unblockable if the opponent controls a plains. That has nothing to do with a PLANESWALKER, which is a type of card and not a mechanic. And just so you're aware, plains walk does not effect lands that produce white mana, just the ones marked plains like a basic plains or something like Temple Garden that says it's a plains.
Sorry if this sounds mean, but this is the weirdest confusion of a card I have ever seen. - To post a comment, please login or register a new account.

Is the Magic symbol with 25 in front of it. Its not that bad!

But commons are common, so there is a cap on how high prices can go. Adding to this is the fact that there are so many viable decks that, if one deck becomes super pricey, people will transition over to other, cheaper decks.
Regardless, Pauper decks will never be as expensive as Modern decks (some of which are over a thousand dollars to build).

Actually, I would argue that we - as average players - have access to far more information than we did 15 years ago. Remember, 15 year ago we did not have Youtube, Facebook, Twitter, Myspace or Reddit. Most websites were Web 1.0, with very little user interaction. The only real place to talk about Magic was to join a forum (usually the official WotC forums) and/or go to an IRC/Chat Room/AIM/YIM.
We live in a vastly different world today than we did 15 years ago. Formats are "solved" faster because the Internet has democratized information. Anyone can post an idea on a forum, facebook, reddit or make a Youtube video. Those ideas are picked up and discussed. If they are good, the ideas spread from platform to platform. Along the way, the idea is refined and made better.
We also have 15 more years of collective experience to draw from. That experience helps us, collectively, understand the ins and outs of the game, determine good cards from the bad and informs everything we do as we collectively refine and modify decks.
Also remember that Magic Online was just a year old 15 years ago. MTGO is a huge reason we are able to refine and distill decks so quickly. 15 years ago, you had to leave your house and play with other people to test decks out. For most people this meant waiting for the weekly tournament at the local shop. We would then post tournament reports on the Magic Forums. Hopefully people would help you refine deck but the process was slow and mired in problems.

The Nerf one is flavorful and fun but not my cup of tea.
Pretty sure it is a flip card, since it tells you to transform him and he has a flip icon in the upper left hand corner.

I know I want the tokens but I am not going to win or place at FNM often enough to justify the expenditure of making a bleeding edge standard deck. Especially not when I could just go to eBay and buy the tokens.
I suppose I could do that if the tokens were handed out like candy but... I feel like I would not mind playing and losing with my rogue decks if I was getting something I wanted.

Pretty much. They want to move passed the last rocky year and look towards a bright future.

Regardless of the system (CARDNAME or cards that have specific qualities), it is a symptom of a system that has a glaring problem. The designers - and the game more specifically - clearly want there to be a sub-type that describes particular kinds of monsters (not just Fiends but Archfiends; not just Spellcasters but Magicians, etc.). Looking for monsters with a particular attribute and DEF is interesting but it also means that, for the rest of the life of the game, you have to reserve that combination of attribute and DEF so that you do not accidentally let a monster gain the benefits of the support cards who should not have access to that support.
To me, it would be easier to create a sub-type, then layer on other qualities so as to add granulation and differentiation (you have your HERO sub-type and then specific cards can call out more specific kinds of HEROes (Earth and Fire, 1500+ ATK, etc.)).

Standard is a mess. We have had 3 major revisions to how Standard is structured in just a handful of years.
We went from:
- One 3-set block and a Core Set being released each year, with a yearly culling of the oldest block and the oldest Core Set
- Two 2-set blocks being released each year, with blocks rotating every 18 months
- Two 2-set blocks being released each year, with a yearly culling of the oldest two blocks
- Three large sets and a Core Set being released each year, with a yearly culling of the three oldest sets and the oldest Core Set
I mean Metamorphosis was only announced on August 25, 2014. The 2-set block dynamic only really took hold in the spring of 2016 and we did not have a Standard composed of only 2-set blocks until fall of 2016.
So, really, we have only lived in the true 2-set block world for a year and they are already fiddled with the mechanics (going from 18 months to 2 years) and then whole sale abandoned the concept.
I liked the change from 3-set blocks to 2-set blocks quite a bit and am a huge fan of the idea of ditching blocks and focusing solely on large sets. It makes a lot more sense to me from a sales and hyper perspective. Still, they have basically ruined the one thing Standard needed to be popular - stability. It is going to take time and effort to earn that trust back but I have no doubt WotC will be able to do it.
