    Quote from Horrornick »
i see a pattern, because magic is expensive> people play a cheap format, format gets expensive, rinse repeat

sounds like pauper is a nice alternative to commander,"keep magic fun",hope it stays that way. how much can a common's price raise? (oh , 8$,10$? ) alright..

at least you wont see the ridiculous uncommon prices i guess

But commons are common, so there is a cap on how high prices can go. Adding to this is the fact that there are so many viable decks that, if one deck becomes super pricey, people will transition over to other, cheaper decks.

Regardless, Pauper decks will never be as expensive as Modern decks (some of which are over a thousand dollars to build).

I have a theory that pretty much every standard/type 2 environment has been fundamentally broken, and that it was only because sets rotated in/out fast enough for people to figure it out in time. Because we live in a world where information availability and Magic resources are increasing at an exponential rate, they are solved before rotations can solve the problem. The average Magic player is also so much better than before. I think that if the current level of sophistication and information existed before, we would have had bannings in pretty much every Standard environment ever.

That's quite the claim, and completely unsubstantiated. The internet is no faster than it was 15 years ago, and I don't see any grounds on which to claim today's top players are better than yesteryear's.

Actually, I would argue that we - as average players - have access to far more information than we did 15 years ago. Remember, 15 year ago we did not have Youtube, Facebook, Twitter, Myspace or Reddit. Most websites were Web 1.0, with very little user interaction. The only real place to talk about Magic was to join a forum (usually the official WotC forums) and/or go to an IRC/Chat Room/AIM/YIM.

We live in a vastly different world today than we did 15 years ago. Formats are "solved" faster because the Internet has democratized information. Anyone can post an idea on a forum, facebook, reddit or make a Youtube video. Those ideas are picked up and discussed. If they are good, the ideas spread from platform to platform. Along the way, the idea is refined and made better.

We also have 15 more years of collective experience to draw from. That experience helps us, collectively, understand the ins and outs of the game, determine good cards from the bad and informs everything we do as we collectively refine and modify decks.

Also remember that Magic Online was just a year old 15 years ago. MTGO is a huge reason we are able to refine and distill decks so quickly. 15 years ago, you had to leave your house and play with other people to test decks out. For most people this meant waiting for the weekly tournament at the local shop. We would then post tournament reports on the Magic Forums. Hopefully people would help you refine deck but the process was slow and mired in problems.

These are so cool! I love the D&D and Transformer cards. I love that the D&D Sword makes Gold Dragons and forces you to roll a d20! Grin

The Nerf one is flavorful and fun but not my cup of tea.

Double-faced MtG Transformer card without "transform" ability. I've seen some crap.

Pretty sure it is a flip card, since it tells you to transform him and he has a flip icon in the upper left hand corner.

posted a message on How much should it cost to play Standard & Modern competitively?
Standard should be cheap, it is a throw-a-way format whose whole point is to constantly change and evolve. 400-500 bucks is RIDICULOUS for a deck that will only be legal for a max of two years (usually less, sometimes a lot less).

You would think they would hand the double sided tokens out like candy, while keeping promos for placing at the tourneys.

I know I want the tokens but I am not going to win or place at FNM often enough to justify the expenditure of making a bleeding edge standard deck. Especially not when I could just go to eBay and buy the tokens.

I suppose I could do that if the tokens were handed out like candy but... I feel like I would not mind playing and losing with my rogue decks if I was getting something I wanted.

    5. Why announce the return to dominaria when it is so far out?
Because standard is at a all time low and they are trying to a show the player base that fun times are coming, just hang with us.[/quote]

Pretty much. They want to move passed the last rocky year and look towards a bright future.

And our average card is better quality than the MtG equivalent.
It took YGO four separate errata on Waboku to get people to realize that it has always functioned exactly like Fog. (And considering Emissary of Harmony was first printed in the very first precon decks for the OCG, that's kinda sad.) UDE's mishandling of localizing (Demon) screwed up a major mechanic present in the Threat of the Demon World set. Somebody at Konami thought that a 0-mana Divination would be a good idea. When they finally realized their screwup, they decided that a 0-mana Ponder that stopped you from casting other copies on the same turn would be a good idea.

Also: Screw "Fushioh Richie". Nosferatu Lich forever~!

Waboku was so poorly worded and understood for years.

What was wrong with the Archfiends?

If you are going to face palm about localization, look no farther than Amazon Archer. Every card with the Amazoness theme has to specifically call out Amazon Archer in the text because it does not fit the naming theme. Which is one thing that bugs me about YuGiOh, they use names rather than types and subtypes to create thematic groups of cards. It would be so much easier if they just had a type called "Grave Keeper" or "Elemental Warrior", rather than relying on every card having a specific name to fit the theme.

One day I am gonna make a thread in off topic about "Myths and Lies about Yugioh", that is not true anymore*. For example the deck I listed above the Lyricals, mechanically call for "Lv1 Winged Beast Type Monsters", save their swarmer. Another deck, Magician Girl (related to Dark Magician Girl), call for mostly Spellcasters (through a few do list "Magician" Girl"). Another Lavals call for "FIRE" Monsters with 200 Defense.

Their is a set of HEROs, (The Elemental Warriors you referred to), that look for an Elemental HERO + (Attribute). And their is another new deck Triamid that looks for "Rock-type." And the new VWXYX Retrains search and support "Unions" in general or for "Light Machine Union". And finally there is a new card call Force Strix that searches "Lv4 Dark Winged Beast". And that is the just the tip of the iceberg.

More relavently, it depends on the era. Certain Era's tend to be "Name" Matter more. Other eras (such as the current one) often are "Stat/Attribute/Type Matter". However there is considerable overlap of these eras.

*The latest era, beginning with Code of the Duelist (which introduces Link summon) has swung the Pendulum back to name matters over "attribute/Stat/type" matters

Regardless of the system (CARDNAME or cards that have specific qualities), it is a symptom of a system that has a glaring problem. The designers - and the game more specifically - clearly want there to be a sub-type that describes particular kinds of monsters (not just Fiends but Archfiends; not just Spellcasters but Magicians, etc.). Looking for monsters with a particular attribute and DEF is interesting but it also means that, for the rest of the life of the game, you have to reserve that combination of attribute and DEF so that you do not accidentally let a monster gain the benefits of the support cards who should not have access to that support.

To me, it would be easier to create a sub-type, then layer on other qualities so as to add granulation and differentiation (you have your HERO sub-type and then specific cards can call out more specific kinds of HEROes (Earth and Fire, 1500+ ATK, etc.)).

There are a lot of problems with Magic.

Standard is a mess. We have had 3 major revisions to how Standard is structured in just a handful of years.

    We went from:

    - One 3-set block and a Core Set being released each year, with a yearly culling of the oldest block and the oldest Core Set
    - Two 2-set blocks being released each year, with blocks rotating every 18 months
    - Two 2-set blocks being released each year, with a yearly culling of the oldest two blocks
    - Three large sets and a Core Set being released each year, with a yearly culling of the three oldest sets and the oldest Core Set

I mean Metamorphosis was only announced on August 25, 2014. The 2-set block dynamic only really took hold in the spring of 2016 and we did not have a Standard composed of only 2-set blocks until fall of 2016.

So, really, we have only lived in the true 2-set block world for a year and they are already fiddled with the mechanics (going from 18 months to 2 years) and then whole sale abandoned the concept.

I liked the change from 3-set blocks to 2-set blocks quite a bit and am a huge fan of the idea of ditching blocks and focusing solely on large sets. It makes a lot more sense to me from a sales and hyper perspective. Still, they have basically ruined the one thing Standard needed to be popular - stability. It is going to take time and effort to earn that trust back but I have no doubt WotC will be able to do it.
